I can't knock Hampshire to much, last year I had a hart attack while shooting, actually while marking didn't even get to shoot! Hampshire police came to the range after I had been rushed to hospital and took the guns I had with me into safe keeping. A few weeks later I went into Basingstoke police station to get them back its fun walking into a police station and saying can I have my guns back! Anyway the officer gave them back to me admired them and then asked me how I was after my hart attack and made a point of saying how well I looked, I cant thank them enough for the help they gave me that day.

I have a Hart attack every time i see my local district council bill...

Hampshire firearms took about 8 weeks for my sgc so not too bad. I was 'very low risk' apparently so quite quick.

Had a great morning shooting on Saturday as a guest of a friend at pirbright (overlooks all the bisley ranges.) I think i will have to try and be proposed to join there.

Anyone here in Scotland received, or still waiting for, their air weapon certificate?

Submitted my application mid November, but still nothing from Polis Scotland so just wondering if anyone else has received theirs and how long it took.

I dont suppose anyone has a link for some reading about buying a first gun?

I want to get into clay shooting, and am just curious about lots of things such as the number of guns, the process for purchasing and selling, the legalities of such, purchasing and selling ammunition, different types, wads, bores, what modifications can be made to weapons, and how clay pigeon works in general, if youre going on your own.

Cheers smile

There's a million links... the easiest way is to find someone who shoots, ask them, and go to a few shoots with them. You can borrow their gun if you're an adult, so only need to pay £25 for a few hours of fun.

Once you have your SGC
Number of guns = as many as you want
Purchasing and selling = easy, but has to be recorded on SGC's of buyer and seller
Legalities = obviously it's legal
Purchasing ammunition = show your SGC
Selling ammunition = Why?
Wads = many places don't allow plastic
Bores = 12 bore is best & cheapest for adult males
What modifications = The gun fit is usually all you'd consider modifying
How clay pigeon works = You shout 'pull', the clays fly through the air, you try to shoot them.

It's fun! smile

You can only shoot one at a time, but you can own as many as you like.

You need a licence for a shotgun and most likely a gun cabinet.

Once you have a SGC, take that to gun shop when buying guns or ammo.

Most common clay grounds you will see :

12 bore over under
Most want fibre wads and 28 gram loads

Some ground aloow you to shoot solo by using the electronic claymate system, other less formal shoots you will just squad up with a whoever arrive.Someone says pull, someone else triggers the clay.

Catch your empty catridges and place in the bin provided. Do not think you are Billy the kid and openly break your gun and eject empties all over the shooting area.

Thats the basics, after you have learned what how to shoot, you may need a gun fitting session to improve the standard fit of the stock to your body.

Its addictive, satisfying and gets expensive.

Carts now are around 18p each, when I shot more a few years back, they were 10-12p.

Add 25-35p per Bird and it adds up....

Cheers chaps, I'd like to shoot solo tbh. Guess i'll have to try and find a place that supports it.

The only modifications I was thinking were things like sights and barrel mods, such as longer barrels, chokes etc.

Buy a multichoke, fit 1/2 and 3/4 in and dont worry about it.

Dont buy a 32" unless you like swinging punt guns around, stick with 28/30".

Sights arnt really relevant with a shotty, you need to keep your eyes on the target and maintain an appropriate lead picture...

There's nothing wrong with shooting solo, and lots of places support it. You can shoot in a field with strangers, probably find someone to push the buttons for you, but it will be a bit disappointing. You can shoot at a shooting ground with timers so you don't need any help, but it'll cost more. You can shoot a guided round but it'll cost even more.

For me, the social side is at least half of the fun, and by far the easiest way to learn to shoot. If you want to do it on your own, good luck to you smile

But you claim to be a disgruntled 32 year old policeman and yet

There's a pair of wood pigeons driving me mental.

They used to live in a tree about 4 doors down (new build estate, cul-de-sac part of it) until this tree was cut down in the winter. They used to be quiet until this point.

Now all they do is sit on fences, roofs, chimneys and in gardens, coo-ing all fking night and day. from 5am until 10pm coo. coo. coo. coo. coo. coo. coo. coo. coo. coo. COO fkING COO.

They sometimes sit on my fence next to my car, just looking at me, mocking me.

I've also had some huge sts on my car, which is clearly more than you'd get from the usual sparrows, blackbirds and magpies that float around the area. It must be these pair of fat fks.

My understanding is, the law is a bit grey on what I can do. They're not really a huge health hazard, and I have no crops to protect. So what are my options? I need something that wont get me in trouble with the law, regardless how obscure the law is, I cant risk my job by getting done for some obscene 300 year old law relating to shooting birds. I'd love to go and buy an air rifle and take the fks out, but it's not fair on my neighbours if they drop into their garden, they have kids and such.

Maybe i could tempt them into my rear garden with some food, then pop them, but again, I dunno if this is legal.
...maybe you shouldn't have a gun smile

Off to the South of France for some Fitasc Sporting.

Fingers crossed for the weather.
Had a brush up lesson with Ed Solomons on Sunday which gave me some confidence with my new gun.

Well, I had some space in the cabinet and wanted something with iron sights for short range targets 25-50 meters. So I got this
