The PH Gun Cabinet - Shooting Matters
Discussion
Well, I got a weaver rail via my US cousin from HKparts.net for my Walther/HK MP5. Now I need to buy a red dot sight.
I really have two options, but a made-in-China airsoft sight like this one (it is made by Walther, same as my MP5, so it can't be completely crap):
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Walther-Holographic-red-...
Or I could spend £220 or so for a Vortex or similar which you could put on anything including a full bore rifle, not that I'm ever likely to put a red dot on a full bore rifle, so this may be overkill for a 22LR. It's pushing a £200 price difference between an airsoft red dot sight and a name brand red dot sight.
What do you think?

I'm going to be putting a Vortex Sparc 2 on my .22LR.As said, don't expect a cheap airsoft jobbie to last to long a .22RF.
I suppose it depends on what your using the .22 for?
It's frustrating, isn't it?
Trap shooting is the closest you'll get to target shooting and it is possible to do both quite successfully, but it's rare to find someone who's good with a shotgun at sporting and also handy with a pistol or rifle.
I tried to get better at sporting for a while and was fine while I was being coached, but as soon as I'm on my own it all goes to pieces. I now limit myself to the odd round of skeet as at least that's predictable!
The good thing is you've tried it though. Too many stick to one discipline and won't even consider trying something slightly different.
My best advice is to get some good coaching if you want to do better.

Tried clay shooting for the first time
Absolutely useless. Not sure I can be good at both target and clay.
Getting my head around giving lead and not freezing before taking a shot is going to be hard
I thought the same, but actually its not so bad when you get your head around it, and have a gun that fits you properly.Absolutely useless. Not sure I can be good at both target and clay.

I'm really enjoying it now, although I go from being really crap and only scoring 10-15 out of 50, to having a really good session and scoring 30-35.
Been borrowing different guns to try though, so have ended up ordering the one I didn't think I would like, but its the one I easily shot the best with, and fits me the best. Waiting for it to arrive any day now

This was an informal place. Walk around a field clays going off from all different angles 6 shots at each station then walk on.I'm really enjoying it now, although I go from being really crap and only scoring 10-15 out of 50, to having a really good session and scoring 30-35.

I did well at ones that were going away from me and ones that kind of went straight up and hung in the air. Everything else hopeless I even knew I was shooting behind them as I pulled the trigger like there was some imaginary force stopping me give lead.

That's the plan I've already emailed another location. Time is at a premium at the moment but it's something I'd like to give a good go at. Enjoyed it.My best advice is to get some good coaching if you want to do better.

Sounds familiar The club I've joined has just bought one of those 'rabbit' clay machines, which fires the clay on edge across the ground at the speed of a running rabbit - haven't hit one of those yet or even got close

I find those relatively easy The club I've joined has just bought one of those 'rabbit' clay machines, which fires the clay on edge across the ground at the speed of a running rabbit - haven't hit one of those yet or even got close
It's the crossers I have most trouble with as well. Predictably, I'm usually behind them but once I get the lead right, I then end up below, above or anywhere else other than where the clay is. Stupid game.

Its no co-incidence that many of higher scoring WW2 fighter pilots were also crack shots with a shotgun as its the same angle off defection shooting skill for birds/clays as aerial gunnery.aeropilot said:

I can believe that. Vectoring is definitely a skill which would improve my hit rate if I could master it!FurtiveFreddy said:

To begin with it is very frustrating but slowly mastering the lead and follow through concept, however pairs are interesting because follow through is nigh on impossible.
Wouldn't enter a competition yet!
I have a great coach but seem to lose it when he isn't there. Good fun but expensive

For me, the biggest thing with clays is nothing beats putting lead up the barrel.
I used to shoot weekly and my scores were climbing, then the price of bullets started to get heavy so we were only going monthly - scores dropped like a stone.
At the height, I was buying a 1000 every month @ c.£110/1000
Now, my favoured Gamebores are nearly twice that !

Tricky situation. I bought a new rifle, but sort of forgot to tell my wife. Had to sneak it into the house. Might have to keep hiding it until after she next buys something expensive.
