Price (£650) seems not completely ridiculous considering it is a commercial range. You can't compare it with club prices which are staffed by volunteers. The operator really needs to open it every weekend, not just once a month, to make it appealing. I'd
That will be a planning restriction, not something he can just decide to do.

If the facilities were top notch he might have had more interest, but I've seen some photos and it looks very rough. It also looked as though the shooting points were all benches, which might be a result of the berm heights and safety angles not allowing prone shooting.

You also have to ask yourself who wants to pay that sort of money to shoot .22 or moderated full-bore at 100yds max. It just doesn't add up and looks like someone who's had an idea to build a range but hasn't bothered to research who and what would need to shoot there to make it work financially.

Thanks for all the good advice...the message to get a good bore snake and not to be wedded to the idea of 32inch barrels has come through loud and clear!

Thanks all :-)

Their feedback based on facebook reviews (currently sitting on a 1.6/5 rating)

Silverstone Shooting Centre said:
Our website is still being built but in the meantime here are the details of the memberships available, there is a lot here so please read all of it before jumping to conclusions. We have a different structure to pricing than most ranges.

The range is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday every week from 9am to 6pm, with shooting commencing from 10am to 5pm. The range is also open every alternate Saturday each month with other days added as the calendar dictates. These will be released each January for the following 12 months.

There are NO RANGE FEES. The membership covers all ranges, all distances and all target types. Booking can be made by members on line via the website when we open fully on October 3rd.

Gold Membership
£650 per year. Unlimited visits, unlimited use of the range.
Silver Membership
£500 per year. Unlimited visits, unlimited use of the range for weekday use only.
Youth Membership (under 16 years of age)
£300 per year. Unlimited visits, unlimited use of the range.

The range offers turning targets at 10m, 25m, 50m and 100m, a 30m long running boar target and 30 targets at 50m and 100m with HD cameras fitted so you can see your fall of shot, they are high resolution, hard wired (not wifi - which suffers image degradation) so you can see an air gun pellet strike. There are also two mini mcqueen targets, moving and resetting practical targets as well as poppers, air rifle targets, fruit, plates etc.

We have an opening offer at the moment, if you join now then your renewal extends until January 2019, so 3 months free.

We are currently evaluating airgun membership, the range will be open to airgunners but at the moment we want to assess demand to see if we are able to open specifically for airgun use (ie not share the range with rifle shooters).

As most people are used to paying range fees on top of membership its worth noting that if you shoot once a month it works out at £54 a visit - for all targets, all distances. If you take advantage of the opening offer that drops to £43 a visit, all targets and all distances. Obviously if you come twice a month that drops again to £21 a visit, there are no other charges for use other than the target boards and targets and for these members are welcome to bring their own if they wish.

Membership will be limited to 200 members only, we do not want our range to be rammed full, each day is limited to 20 shooters per day maximum. The opening weekend got 66 new members so thats now 134 memberships left. The range will not be open to non members at all except for competitions.
Members are able to bring a guest at a guest fee cost of £75 a day, maximum 3 guests per member per visit.

We are currently considering walk in options, but at the moment we have decided to keep the range member only, no walk ins at all.

Club bookings will be treated on a case by case basis depending on numbers and distances clubs want to shoot. Email us for details.
This contradicts what was on the minimal info boards on the open day, specifically limited membership (not mentioned at all), alternate Saturday openings (was advertised on the day as one Sat/Sun weekend a month), no walks ons (walk on price was listed), the guest fee is now £75 instead of £175 and the 20 person per day limit (no limit mentioned).

I don't understand limiting a day to 20 people when when you're advertising that you have 30 bays on site? The 20 person limit is also only going to add to peoples concerns that on the few weekend days it is open, they're going to struggle to be able to book a space.

What would be the logic in limiting weekend opening? Noise levels?

Yes. Same as racing/trackdays. All civilian ranges can be limited by the local authority who granted planning permission.

The range fees for that Silverstone range are mad.

I shoot at a small range in Cambs and it is much cheaper and doesn't have the restrictions on noise either, good job too as one of my rifles is a Mosin M38!!

If you are near Cambridge (or near enough) pm me and I will let you know which club.

I have a Kemen with 32" barrels and it "just" fits my cabinet. I personally don't find the 32" barrels slow/unwieldy but really it's about the gun as a whole not simply the barrel length.

I have had 28", 30" and 32" barrelled guns, the 28 definitely felt too short but the 30 and 32 seem equally fine (have both at the moment).

Hard to find as they make so few, but I highly recommend Kemen, a lovely gun using the Perazzi style action.

Picked up my new gun yesterday...a Beretta 692 Black with 30 inch barrels. Thanks for all of the good advice on here (and yes, I did pick up a genuine Hoppes Bore Snake too!). I tried lots of different guns but plumped for the Beretta in the end as I seemed to shoot the best with it. Compared it to a standard 692 but plumped for the Black as I thought the weight seemed perfect (and I didn't seem to get beaten up by recoil at all). More generally, I was able to get the best "out of the box" fit (after adding two spacers to the end) from the Beretta(s) and I also quite like the rather utilitarian, understated look of the Black - and the pointless carbon fibre rib ("because racecar"). The wood isn't anything amazing, but overall I like the satin finish and think that overall the gun has a nice, serious, purposeful look to it.

I also tried a Caesar Guerini Invictus - came a close second. Pipped at the post due to fit and also when the guy in the shop screwed the chokes in, he seemed to struggle so I was worried that the gun in stock might be a bit of a wrong-un. I also didn't take to the fairly light coloured wood.

Browning 725: didn't seem to fit as well - I saw a LOT of rib - and felt quite heavy compared to some of the other guns. Didn't like the dark, very glossy, wood. Not keen on the fluoro bead (although I know this can be quickly changed).

Blaser F16: I REALLY wanted to like this gun as I thought it looked great. If I'm being honest ' on paper' it's the one I thought I'd come home with. Sadly, in the end it all felt too slimline and dainty for me. They only had a 32 inch in stock too.

DT11: a great gun, but the second hand one I tried seemed to show a fair bit of wear and tear so I suspect it had been well used. Also, had 32 inch barrels.

So I plumped for the 692 and am very happy with it. Got through a box of cartridges post-purchase and am keen to go back and shoot some more biggrin

Also, thanks for the comment about fitting into the cabinet - having added two spacers and using external chokes, despite only having 30 inch barrels it only just fits!

Nice - good buy smile

The 692 Black was the gun I 'wanted' but it just didn't fit me right.

I think there's only about 100g difference in weight between the 692 Black and the Browning 725 Black that I ended up buying, but I did think the 692 felt lighter to swing (possibly the effect of that c/f rib?)

I also found the palm swell on the Browning fitted my hands better, but it was the drop at comb/face/heel on the Browning that suited me more on the 725.

Thanks!

It seems as though we've been through very similar research and purchase processes and ended up with essentially the same gun...the only difference being that we have fallen onto opposite sides of the Beretta and Browning 'fence' as a result of how the two guns fit.

Happy shooting to us both! thumbup

I've been thinking about a new gun. I spotted the Boxall & Edmiston range and decided to take a closer look. The 12b square action sideplates look wonderful.

I arranged to try their guns. The first gun out of the slip was a round action 20b. I didn't like the look of it but it felt wonderful in the hand - very delicate. I then tried a 16b and finally the 12b square action. The 12b felt like a fence post after the round action but looked absolutely stunning. I shot equally well with all of them (though slightly better on a tricky long "grouse" clay with the 12b).

It's left me with a quandary. The gun I like to look at or the one that I like to hold? I suspect that I'd get used to the square action and never look back.

B&E guns all look nice and wood is excellent. I preferred the square but not the price!

For me they come in fairly heavy but that's personal. I would go for the one you would like the hold of. Barrel length?

What are you shooting? If it's game and off the peg then I can understand but not designed for rough shooting IMHO

Got my SGC and FAC through the letter box a few days ago, took about 7 months in total.

Straight down to the RFD to collect my H&K .22 MP5 that's been sat in their safe for a few months. Also grabbed an Armsan A612 semi-auto for some cheap and cheerful clay shooting.

Also popped into Blackrifle UK earlier for their open day, great bunch of guys and worth checking out if you've got an FAC.

Excellent!!!!!! Was it you who I talked about the MP5 before? Have you fired it yet? What 22 ammo allowance did you get? Was it the extendable or fixed stock that you got?

If you ever want to put an optic on it, drop me a message. I did the research on mine; you can get a weaver rail which will still allow you to use the open sights.

Yes it was, I think it was you posting that they were being discontinued that spurred me to buy it before getting my FAC.

Got 1000rnds on my ticket and went with the fixed stock as I wasn't a fan of the faux moderator on the extendable. Managed to get a couple of spare mags as well and also picked up a genuine H&K sling.

Probably going to keep it on irons for now, but thanks for the offer.
