The PH Gun Cabinet - Shooting Matters
Discussion
Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place.
Having searched Google and still non the wiser I thought I'd ask here.
Is it a possibility to satisfy my need to experience shooting, having watched way too YouTube channels talking and demonstrating the ruger 10/22 and the M&P ar15/22, straight pull rifles as well as many others, I would love to have the experience of shooting a similar rifle as mentioned above, be it at a indoor or outdoor range.
Considering the facts I don't know any shooting club members and no experience or connections, what are my options, if any?
Are shooting lessons available? I am in the North West.
Thanks

North west? How far north west, you ever get over east because there are a couple of places here you can rock up without a licence and hire a .22 semi auto Having searched Google and still non the wiser I thought I'd ask here.

There are loads of clubs in the NW. Having searched Google and still non the wiser I thought I'd ask here.

Basic (yet not complete I might add) answer is, you need to be a member or a probationary member of most clubs before you can shoot. Very basically. As I said there is a bit more to it legally but for your purposes and for our region that's where you are at.
Probably the main exception in our area, as already mentioned is the Phoenix Range in Barnsley where you can do a kind of "try before you join" type of session. Some other clubs do a "try before you join" day but its usually one or 2 days per year rather than all the time.
As such I think Phoenix is your best bet for a quick session of plinking. If after that you decide you want to take it a bit more serious there are a good few options.
For indoors you have Wigan Target Sports Club, Bolton NRP, Altrincham Rifle and Pistol Club, Marple Rifle and Pistol Club.
Outdoors Bolton Gun Club, Rossendale Fusiliers, Diggle Ranges / PSSA.
The only club listed (that I know of) above where you can pretty much shoot anything is Diggle Ranges. The rest have some kind of restriction.
If you do decide to join a club and apply for a FAC make sure you understand their probationary process, it can be lengthy and demanding of your time. Membership is generally not offered on a plate, you have to make many visits over many months before they will sign you off. Some clubs are currently not accepting new members either..
All that to one side, its a great sport to get into. Mini rifle is great fun. Its also cheap, plenty of second hand rifles for sale and ammo is cheap.
If you want to come and see what happens at a mini rifle shoot PM me.
Think I'll be out of a job until mid-Sept, so I have a bit of free time but not much cash. I'd like to do some middistance shooting at Bisley without paying a marker. It's a duff job so Mrs Puff would be wanting a new handbag or something that costs more than a market even if I can con her into doing it
Furthest I've used the fluorescent shoot-n-see targets so far is 300 yards. Can see a 30 caliber hole in them with a spotting scope no problem.
Do you think I would be able to see holes in a shoot-n-see target at 500 or 600 yards?

I use the newer 12" diamond formation targets for 600 yards. You can just about see hits with a decent spotting scope as they use black on white, well grey on black IYSWIM. If you are in wind or using a new load best to have a spotter to get you on the paper then try and spot your hits.

Not really an issue now with Bisley converting so many target on Century and Stickledown to electronic targets, so they don't have to employ markers etc.Furthest I've used the fluorescent shoot-n-see targets so far is 300 yards. Can see a 30 caliber hole in them with a spotting scope no problem.

So, just pick what ever distance is available with the leccy targets. The half dozen or so far right 300m Century ones are now electronic, so you're sorted for 300m.
I think a few are now up and running for 600m as well now, but can't say for certain.
Only issue with the electronic and no marker, is if you are hitting the target, it's not easy to spot where the rounds are going if you don't have a spotter, although this is more of an issue at the longer ranges on Stickledown, especially in summer with any heat haze.
I gave at 900m after 20 rds in June as I had no idea where the rods were going and my colleague spotting counldn't see anything through the heat haze. I was using the same sight settings for the range as had used previously when markers were scoring, and was hitting target fine.......so somewhat disgruntled.
This wasn't an issue when using the electronic targets at 300m on Century though.

^ I've used the electronic targets, but I prefer the satisfaction of having holes in a bit of paper which I can look at and measure afterwards
Also the electronic targets are too expensive!
Once they've replaced all of them with electronic ones, you'll not have much choice other than maybe on 100m Short Sib...?Also the electronic targets are too expensive!
I agree I prefer to have marker if just sole or a couple of people.
Our club shoots are much better though with the electronic as we aren't waiting for the one armed paper hanging marker when they are having to cover 2 or 3 targets at once as not enough markers..........!!
Also wondering if anybody has transported firearms to/from the range on a motorbike.
I can think of two potential issues:
- bikes vibrate a lot and it could affect the zero of the scope
- securing it to the bike
I've seen a few people put the firearm in a flexible guitar case (I wonder how many of the guitar cases you see around actually contain guitars and how many contain guns or all manner of other stuff ) and put that on their back, but I'd rather strap it to the bike.

Thank you to those who replied to my query a few pages back, apparently the post I thought I posted didn't, many apologies for looking like an ungrateful ignorant ass, the replies are appreciated, lots of useful info.
I had mentioned about how non/new club members wouldn't have immediate access to firearms, I had guessed that would be the case, anything less than that would raise concerns.
Thanks again for the info.😀😀

I'm considering the open wallet surgery of my first grouse day this year....
Would like to go along with dad to "give it a go" at least once, boys outing etc
Having said that half the fun of shooting is being with a group of people you know, we'd be 2 out of 8 or so I suppose.
More achievable is to do a simulated game day for fun, been meaning to arrange that for ages!
