Vegas - my pal shot one. Very difficult to even hit a man size target at 20 yards with. Stupidly fierce kick.
I had similar fun with a .45 Tommy gun and sprayed a target without hurting it much :-)
The very first gun that I shot, a few weeks ago was .44 magnum. The first bullet, went through the dead centre of the head on the target, the crazy Russian I was with gave me the cartridge and said that I need to keep it as my first bullet was dead centre and I was a natural. Thought this may be interesting to ppl here. Tom WIlson relates how Arvo Ojala could quickdraw and shoot 3 bullets from a wild western revolver in one action as he re-holstered it.

I did the 5 gun package which included a 9mm handgun which was fairly easy to shoot tbh, reasonable accuracy and kick. The best was an M16 or the BAR in semi auto if I recall, clips lasted what seemed to be about 5 seconds!
I shot the .44 first, then a .45 then a 9mmby the time I got to the two autos the russian guy wanted me to shoot 'russian style'one handed with my hand on my hip, felt like a duellist. I'd put the magnum back by that point. I was mesmerised by the selection of handguns, so much so that when I decided to finish my session and pay up, I had utterly forgotten about the shotguns and machines on the wall...but really, I'd had enough by that point, my head was tired.

He’s got a very good presentation style.
If you are into historical events check out his analysis of the Miami shootoutout.
He also speaks authoritatively on self defence and laws around that having been involved in two and studying many more.
He’s a bit of a fudd though liking his bird shot and double barrels as self defence weapons.

Paul H is a legend. Quite the gun geek and I love how he never really gives a definitive answer yet at the same time presents all the data.
On the other end of the scale is Edwin "how long does it take a .50 cal to drop back to earth if you shoot it straight up" Sarkissian.

It's good advice and I've heard this many times from experience shooters who keep a shot gun for self defense. load first with bird shot , then buck shot and then slugs. It holds up better in court if you're using a round that's less likely to kill somebody in your first shot.Went to the Royal Armouries in Leeds on Sunday.
I was just amazed at just how many incredibly dangerous inanimate objects they had out on display, just waiting for the opportunity to leap out and shoot someone.
On a slightly more serious note, I was also somewhat surprised by the lack of maintenance, several of the exhibits seemed to be covered in dust, a large number of the lead bullets on display were totally furry with lead oxide, let alone the mislabelled and incorrect exhibits.
Overall, though, the museum was worth a visit.

Hi, hope for a bit of advice on dress code for a Game Day.
I’ve been invited on my 1st Game Day in Nov and I’m really exciting, but I don’t want to make a tit of myself either.
I shoot clays most weekends and I’m a reasonable shoot, but what should I wear to a Game Day.
It’s only a small shoot 100 bird bag and is not a big commercial shoot.
My feeling is to wear moleskins, wellies, shirt & tie, jumper and Barbour.
I don’t want to rock up in full tweed if less informal or vice versa also I don’t have any tweed.
Am I on the right track..
Also, what cartridges should i take size and load, expect the bag to be mixed, pheasant, woodcock etc.
Cheers Andy

"moleskins, wellies, shirt & tie, jumper and Barbour."
Sounds very reasonable. Hopefully not all bought the day before in Chelsea There's nothing worse than all-the-gear-but-no-idea! You are an experienced shooter, don't worry.
Early season game is small, flighty, nervous and sometimes low. So pick your shots well. Nothing but blue sky behind.
Suggest 30gram No 6 cartridges. It isn't really what you load, it's where you point it. Fibre wads not plastics, because livestock don't like eating plastic wads
Be gracious, safe, smiley, take plenty of drinking water and don't get hammered at lunchtime on the nice booze. Take a brace home and eat them, because that's what game shooting is about
don't take any Woodcock, those fellas are not thriving
