So say you just have two gun safes with no separate ammo compartment. A 22lr rifle in one safe and .223 ammo in that same safe, with the gun for which the ammo won't fit. In the other safe a .223 rifle and 22lr ammo, also with a gun it won't fit. Can you do that?
Either get a new tall rifle safe and sell the others to fund or get a separate ammo safe; I chose the new tall rifle safe when I ended up with a similar scenario; also kept one of the others as the ammo / bolt safe.

If you can ring him / her; saves another visit and loads of time. Usually understairs cupboards are good but anywhere hidden from visitors eyes is preferred.
Thanks. I've ordered the cabinet, will give them a ring next week to run my options by them and see what they suggest. I'm only 1 week into my application, this is going to be along couple of months!

Agree - you could describe or draw the location of the proposed installation and send a photo with the cabinet in situ bit not fixed. Understairs cupboard or somewhere out of sight and rawl bolted to a solid wall. Also get a much bigger cabinet that you think you are going to need. It's also handy to have a rifle deep one. I think 5 rifle is minimum I'd want.

Only thing with understatirs cabinets, is if that is where leccy/gas meters are fixed and will involve a 3rd party needing access to read meters etc., in which case it may not be the ideal place to put them.
If no meters etc, then yes, its a good location, if its big enough.

I bought a 16 rifle cabinet. It's configured as 8(actually 10ish), with half as shelves. I store accessories in the 'spare' shelf space. And pistols.

Buy as big as will fit.

If I move to a place with better basement access, I'll buy a 50 gun safe.

Depending on your force and FEO, you may not have a second visit. If you discuss the location on the first visit, they may be happy with a photo of it bolted in.

As per advice in this thread, but a big cabinet. Also buy a deep cabinet incase you one day end up with a shotgun with a pistol grip or a scoped rifle.

Buy as big as will fit is great advice. Not much more in the scheme of things and saves time and money later when you need to swap it out or add another somewhere else.

Just one more thing to consider, all 13 of mine would fit in one when that’s what I had when the bipods and scopes where removed from two long range rifles.
But you know what? The one I wanted was always at the back and it was a pain in the ass.

Get as big as possible

Sorry missed this. Unfortunately no. The law says that ammo must not be kept with guns even if it’s different caliber.

Another reason to get a larger gun cabinet than you think with a safe inside is more room for ammo. A few bricks of 22 and a couple boxes of 50 whatever soon start filling space

Or just pick up a home safe (like the ones that you find in some hotel rooms).

I’ve been using one for years and takes all my shorter and longer rounds, as well as moderators and my bolts (if I fancy storing them separately).

Bit cheaper and more versatile than a second bigger safe, unless that’s what you specifically need.

Seems my force are efficient, so far at least.

Sent application in last Wed.
Referee contacted the day after.
Today I received a call from firearm licensing saying they sent a letter to my GP asking them to put a marker on my medical records......but they wrote back and said I was no longer a patient there.

I forgot that I filled in a form online to change doctors surgeries a couple of months ago, oops hehe

This is what happens when you haven't been to the doctor in 10 years.....

Which force may I ask? Mine got delivered to Beds police yesterday so now I’m in the eeerk phase of waiting!

I should add I’m not the patient type when I want somethinglaugh

Edit 2: just found out that as of 5th November, Herts, Beds and Cambs have suspended all new applications.

It's Durham.

Seems I spoke too soon, I rang them today just to sort out the new GP details and when I asked about timelines they said about 6 months?

If they've already done referees and GP inside of a fortnight, what on earth can take another 5 months?

Probably don’t want to come and visit due to COVID.

I'm surprised they are even processing new applications, my force stopped all new apps again, at the start of the recent 2nd 'lockdown' at the beginning of Nov, and haven't re-opened to new apps as yet.

Be interested in what you think of the GSG-16 once you've had a few months with it...thumbup
I love my GSG StG44, but its a heavy old hector, and its not that easy to fit optics to it, and as my eyes are fast fading, I can sadly see me at some point in the near future having to chop that in for something much lighter and easier to mount modern optics to.
Forgot I put 600 rounds through it last weekend.

Zero failures*

Very fast easy shooting accurate enough at 50 meters with irons very impressed with it. Obviously easy to put optics on it although my red dot decided to play up.

If you are into three gun it has draw backs of the MP5 manual at arms, no last round hold open etc and I don’t like the safety position at all. Really awkward compared to the 15-22 ar pattern rifles.
But it’s fun, mainly because of the manual at arms, who doesn’t want to slap the bolt closed?

  • I’ve got 6 stick magazines not a single failure with these
The hundred round drum did have failures however it was the magazine. I could see I wasn’t loading it right there were voids visible in the drum. It does say stamped on it read the manual which obviously I’d didn’t do

Let's face it, pre-Covid wasn't much better especially for new applications.

Call me cynical, but they just don't want to encourage new entrants to the sport really, do they?

Not really however SYP are actually really good. Our firearms officer is spot on.

I'm with SYP also and have nothing but praise for their team.
Have just returned from a nice morning outing with the fac rapid7 for a change. Love that gun!

To be fair I have quite a few options in spare bedrooms, etc, no issues with walls as it's an old stone house, but my preferred approach is under the stairs mostly out of view next to a coat rack, but he may not like that.
Also be aware of damp when deciding where to put a gun safe.... I made a mistake many years ago and ended up with a damaged/rusty gun. I know there are sachets and what-not, but old stone houses can have good places and bad places!

I guess you mean damp under stairs cupboards and suchlike? Current plan is to put it in one of the spare bedrooms that we've turned into a bit of a sports/hobby room so hopefully will be ok on that front.
