Use enough wadding, all of them. That's including the case.

Has anyone got any advice for shooting your first 100 ESP competition? My friend suggested we enter Sporting Targets on Monday, but I didn’t take him seriously, he’s just informed me that we are now entered!

Never felt so much like a fish out of water as I do now, my hit rate is not the best to say the least!

Which of my muzzle loaders will these fit?
.22 rounds will fit none of them, But with the right dies, you can cast bullets for all of them.

I'm not sure that bismuth is suitable for a traditional muzzle loading rifle that takes conicals as it is too hard to obturate, it will probably work for a patched round ball though.

However, given that these are (in the UK at least) all going to be fired into a backstop and not the local wildlife it does seem to be an overly restrictive solution for a non existent problem. Equivalent to banning all cars to stop drink driving.

See if you can find one of the good shots there and watch how they address and shoot the target. Whatever you do don´t watch any of the less good shots.

When you miss a target instantly dismiss is from your mind. Concentrate exclusively on the next target.

Missing won’t be an issue, I’m used to it! laugh

Thank you for the pointers, as I’m a rookie at this I don’t know what the format is, especially with COVID restrictions in place.

Interestingly I covered up the front bead when it became apparent that I aim (my background is precision target sports) and my hit ratio went up by a marked amount.

You don't need to cover up the front bead but it needs to be in your peripheral vision not your main focus.

I´m a CPSA Level 2 instructor. The tendency is to look at the bead not the target. I used to ask those I was teaching "when you drove here today what did you do when you came to a corner?" They would say "I looked at the corner". So I´d ask "Did you look at the steering wheel". Answer was always No. So I´d say then if you didn't look at the steering wheel to know where you were going then you don´t need to look at the gun.

So look at a target. Assess where you want to shoot it. Assess how much lead it may need. Let´s assume it´s 6 foot. Concentrate on a point 6 foot ahead of the target and pull the trigger when you get to the killing point.

I’ll get be getting lessons when I get my license, as I’ve never had any formal training on a shotgun.

I covered the front bead as it was the easiest thing to try as it is one of those big orange fluro rod things, so for me, quite dominating. By covering it it became a black post and easier for me to ignore.

Taking lessons from someone who knows what they are talking about is a good idea.

Shotgun shooting is a far more tachnical sport than most people imagine.

Best advice I can give you is practice your gun mounting. Shooting gun down is the way to go as you can move the gun quicker. So practice with a mirror where you mount the gun up to your cheek/shoulder and look at where the gun sits. Assuming you are right handed the gun must come up underneath you right eye (and vice versa).

If you are RH and your dominant eye is L (and vice versa) thentthere are techniques to deal with this.

When you are addressing a target the process is 1. Where do I want to shoot. it? This dictates your foot position. 2. Where can I first see it clearly. This dictates where your eyes re initially focussed. 3. Where shall I put the gun - always soem where between 2 and 3.

Hi guys, just saying hello and hope to add a bit more 5houhgts on guns and ammo. I always go by the theory buy best second hand rather than cheap new. Bling wont make you shoot better and only end up losing your money when it comes to trade in.

Great to get out and make some noise again this weekend for first time in 4 months, with a yesterday morning session with the 1873 in some 25yrd gallery at Bisley, and this morning with the 12g doing my best to aid the clay pigeon preservation society laugh

I managed to get out on Saturday for the first time in ages. Shooting at 100, 200 and 300 yards at steel plates. The .451 Hawken doesn't half hit them hard, the AK barely makes them move but the Hawken really sets them swinging, I suppose a 468 grain bullet will do that!. And oh, the smell, I really missed the smell of burnt black powder.

I'd rather be able to do that as would half of my club's membership, as I(we) don't own or have any interest in defacto target rifles and target shooting, but there's only one very limited and very expensive steel plate range option at Bisley curse

Yes, I'd have a go at that myself but it's not good value at all. I'd rather spend the extra and go to Orion.

Yes, would love to do spend a couple of days at Orion.

Will probably have to when I get my K98k sniper clone back from the gunsmith as it will be the only way of trying to get the scope zero'd and ranged in and marked up, as it has a pre-war unmarked elevation ring.

I didn’t finish last!!!!!! bounce

Didn’t go according to plan, and I’m now a signed up member of the target preservation club, but it was enjoyable for the most part, even managed to get 70% hit rate off the high tower, which having never shot an overhead before, I’m happy with.

The coaches I got squadded with, couldn’t believe I’d only had 8 trips to a clay ground inc today, and no lessons. They also confirmed my thoughts on the style of gun I’d chosen.

The downside of today is my neck is killing me, my friends gun as good as it’s been to get me started, I’ll have to stop using. Then I get home to find that applications are delayed until 17th May. censoredrage
