Is there anywhere in the general direction of Bisley for cheap* clay shooting?
Not that I know of.- the Pay and Play at Bisley doesn’t count as cheap.
Have to go further out from the SE to get cheaper.

I drive down the M4 a few times a year to shoot at Barbury, and that's not really any cheaper than Bisley Pay n Play.

Mainstone Hill (in Pirbright camp) is 30p per clay. Weds/Sat/Sun mornings.- the Pay and Play at Bisley doesn’t count as cheap.

Does anyone have much experience with S1 shotguns? Finally got a slot for one. Going to be mainly pests but might rig up something similar to a practical course in the field and have a go at that.
As I'm going to be shooting flying stuff I'm best going tube fed (as much as I'd love one of those licensed Saiga 12 copies). Will something with 10-11 shot capacity really throw me off with the weight in the tube?
Thinking of going inertia system as I've used gas operated before and it was fussy to cycle, I've also heard inertia systems require less cleaning and the cleaning itself is much simpler.

Morning all,
So, my plans have stepped up a notch because someone has offered me a nice Baikal for a very reasonable price providing I take it soon.
As such, i'm scrambling to get myself a cabinet and licence whilst a friend with an existing licence will take ownership of the gun in their cabinet for the meantime.
I'm after a horizontal floor-mount cabinet for 2 assembled guns (in case of visitors and to give me room for shells too), Police approved, at less than £200. This seems to be quite tricky as you can only seem to buy extra-long rifle cabinets or extra-fat breakdown cabinets for 2 guns.
To make things even more difficult, can anyone recommend one from a shop in the locality of Cheshire or Liverpool that will be open this Sunday when I'm off work?
Additional question - looking at the licensing laws for Miseryside, it says "You must not withhold information about any conviction. This includes motoring offences (including speeding offences)...."
I dont have any offences but I do have a SAC about 7 years ago. There appears to be a lot of debate but no firm answer online about whether these count for declaration?
I further assume that, despite taking "up to 60 days" for the approval, I can't send a licence application off before I've got a cabinet as they may want to inspect at any time? Are they still inspecting in person or do they go off photographs now since covid?
TIA!

Speed awareness course, I would just advise them on the "offences and convictions" section. It will not make a jot of difference to your application.
Re turn round times, you might get lucky but don't expect a fast turn around. For a grant I would suggest you set your expectations at 4-5 months at the least.
Visits should be in person. They will want to see your address, inside your address and check the cabinet is fitted correctly.
Don't expect a visit 2 days after you send off your application. The visit is usually the last thing they do. Before that you will have to go through all the other steps.
Most gun shops do not open on Sundays any more. Those days are long gone!
I would just order one online, get it delivered next week and then fit it at your leisure over the next week or two. Get a Brattonsound cabinet if you can - one thats of the right size etc. They are very good quality.
The main thing is make sure if you are fitting it before the visit (which saves time) just make sure its fitted correctly and in a place that the police will be happy with.
Its less of an issue with SGC but they still like it to be hidden away as much as possible and not visible to casual callers. Needs to be affixed to a solid wall etc etc etc.
Remember on the visit do not tell the police, under any circumstances, where you keep your keys. Never tell any other person where you keep your keys. Even if its the spare set that are locked in another safe. They may try and catch you out! (happened to me!)
If they try the old "well what if you are sick or what if the police need to get into your safe where are the keys kept" line... just say well in that case you will have to cut open the safe.
Don't be tricked!!!

As said in previous post, most forces grant times now are quite long for the ones still processing new grants, and there are some that are still not doing this, so best check that your local FET team is actually processing new grants before you actually doing anything else!!
You'll still have plenty of time to sort out a cabinet from the time you actually submit your application.
Very few shops will have cabinets in stock anyway, most are ordered in, especially if you want something like a horizontal floor mounted one as these are not very space efficient so not in demand, so you'll be very lucky to find any shop with one of those in stock anywhere, let alone local to you!!

I'm intrigued, seems a bit harsh to deliberately try and trip people up like that!
My house is all plasterboard walls inside hence my decision to bolt to the concrete floor instead, I've got a good place to hide it away from prying eyes so will take the risk on making a few floor holes in the very unlikely event they want it in a different place.
Am I right in thinking it cannot be located against an outside wall of the house?

No panic as such but would just have been opportune as I'm not going to have a lot of free weekends in the next few months
Merseyside police website is still claiming you can submit and they'll review in 2 months, though based on your reply I wont hold my breath. I dont even know who my GP is either as it's been so long since I last troubled the village surgery near my parents house....

Its not harsh, its just making sure they know that you know what the rules are.
And no, that's not correct about the cabinet location on outside wall.
Fixing to the inside of an external wall is in fact the ideal location, as the outer walls of even modern houses have an inner skin of thermal blocks, so using chemical anchors means a more secure fixing.
My cabinet is fitted to the inside of an external wall (house was built in 2012)

Again, you need to get that sorted, and check with Merseyside Police criteria, as many forces are now insisting on a filled out GP form to go with the application. So, if Merseyside do this, you will need to get the GP form filled in by them just prior to making the application.
Lets say you get your application in by 1st May. I think you will be lucky to see your SGC land on the mat much before July.
Back in the day it was always around 2 months for SGC grants. 3 months if you were somewhere "slow".
Now "because covid" the forces are literally just saying no new applications. MerPol were struggling for staff at the end of last year in their firearms dept.
So just get your application in asap and then its a waiting game.

It can, as long as it's bolted into something solid, i.e. not plasterboard.I'm intrigued, seems a bit harsh to deliberately try and trip people up like that!

Just to re-iterate this - check the local requirements but we needed completed GP forms to send in WITH the application - not after. Took 2 months (and £100 odd) to get those forms from the GP. Then submitted the app to our firearms team.Celtic Dragon said:

I am not sure that telling the Police that your gun cabinet keys are kept in a safe is a bad idea, provided that you are the only one that has access to that safe, plus if this safe is digital then there is no extra key that needs to be hidden. I would be happy telling my FEO this and would even be happy to show them the safe.I’ve not long got my sgc from merseyside. I applied middle of December and had my interview 9th march then received my certificate 2 weeks later.
My cabinet isn’t bolted to an outside wall it’s against a plasterboard wall but coach screws into the studs in the wall. They will have a look at it on the interview.
With regards to the interview it was very informal and easy going. No trick questions, no asking about keys etc.
As has been said you don’t need your cabinet before you apply just something to look to get and fix before the interview.
I have had various speeding offences throughout the years and I didn’t declare them on the application but mentioned it to the FEO and they just said you should just put them down on the form and they’re only bothered if someone’s a habitual speeder which could show a disregard for the law kind of thing.
