Just asked general questions of people living in the house, ages etc, anyone got any problems with guns in the house, general house security as in alarm, if got cctv etc although neither are required.
If your a member of a club, again not required, what safety training you’ve had which I’d had a couple of lessons so that was ok. Any association with known criminals, problems with neighbours etc. Really nothing taxing and so easy going. No trick questions like I imagined.

She did say at the end of the interview that she had no issues with anything so all being well I should get it in 2-4 weeks and it was just over 2 weeks.

Well some good news and some bad news.

Some on here will know I’m a member of the armed forces and unfortunately I have been short notice deployed for 4 months starting end of next month.

I rang Nottingham firearms licensing department to explain that mine and my wife’s application for shotgun grant had only recently gone in but as I would be leaving the country soon what happens regarding the fee we have each paid as my medical etc will be out of date by the time I get back.

Well low and behold a few phone calls to the actual person doing the interview from the Nottingham central firearms officer to my local firearms officer and 30 mins later I get a phone call from my local officer am I free in 2 weeks time.

Here’s hoping if mine and the wife’s references are on the ball (they have been prepped) then I should have my shotgun certificate grant before I deploy.

Got to say I was not expecting that.

Sadly I am losing £5k worth of holiday as my wife and I had VIP tickets to Le Mans and an extended stay until the 20th of June planned. That’s now well and truly cancelled and as it was rolled over from 2 years ago due to covid there is no chance in hell of the insurance company paying out and well the RAF frankly don’t care I just have to suck it up (not the first time either we lost a £3k holiday to Dubai about 5 years ago as well, the joys of serving :-( ).

There's some great advice being given but if Merseyside are anything like Cheshire then don't be surprised if they don't get too complicated about it. Shotgun applications are pretty cut and dry for them and have never heard of them trying to mislead or entrap people with their questions.

I dont know Merseyside too well but think there is a shop in St Helens. I live in South Cheshire and have used the following shops: Cheshire Gun Rooms in Stockport and Bolton (mixed reputation), there's one in Middlewich and BFO Arms based in Middlewich too (but he just delivers out himself and doesn't have a shop as such).

Mickley Hall in Nantwich is my local clay ground and has a pretty decent (but pricey and premium heavy) shop, as does the West Mids shooting ground at Hodnet, but you're getting into North Shropshire territory there and probably too far for you.

If Shropshire isn't too far then there's a random little Petrol Station just on the Staffs border called Croxton. The guy has an incredible collection of shotguns and rifles in a vault behind the petrol station. Think he buys in old surplus stock then anything that's not operational his son makes officially non firing and sells as an antique. I have a friend who recently got his SGC and I went there with him, got a barely used Lanber Sporting Deluxe in original case with all the chokes for £500. Really good shotgun that will suffice for a few years.

To add to that going the other way up the m6, I’ve bought from mcavoys near Chorley and malmo guns in Lancaster. Both great and very helpful. Deposits put on guns and kept till licence arrived no problems at all. Bamfords in Chorley wanted to charge me storage if it was longer than a couple of weeks and didn’t seem as helpful.

I had better not join in, 100 clays would take me an age with the muzzle loader!

Just had my BASC renewal come through, is there any benefit to staying with them for £85/ year when I can get the insurance for a fraction of that?

Why not come, I’d love to see what goes into a BP outfit, and I doubt I’m the only one.

Do you know for sure your insurance won't pay out? Only happened to me once when I was serving, but my travel insurance paid out in full when I had to cancel due to a deployment being extended (as a result of 9/11).

I’ve had the travel insurance through my bank for about 5 years. There is a clause mentioning military and saying your covered if you are deployed and didn’t know about the deployment at point of purchase long the holiday.

Problem is it’s been rolled over for 2 years due to covid. They have therefore said it’s not covered.

This reminds me of the lord flashesrt car warranty thread where I think it might need a massive fight to get them to pay out.

Only found out on Friday so it’s all a bit early yet. But ultimately I take the queens money so I do as I’m told.

If it takes a massive fight with the insurance company then that’s what I’m going to have to do. I get the feeling all of these companies just say no on first request so I will just have to see how I get on.

At least I should have my SGC for when I get back. We’re already talking of doing a bit of a tour of the country going to loads of different shooting grounds to try them out once I get back.

Cheers, many thanks I'll follow them up. My GP proforma is with my local surgery now for them to declare I'm not a loony so I've managed to get the ball rolling.
Mickley is actually my old local ground too, as I'm originally from Tarporley (It's only now I've moved out of the family home that I now have the freedom to keep a gun under my roof.....). However I've only been there once years ago with a group lesson - the club I'm with and whose guns I've been using the last 8 years, shoot at Catton Hall in Frodsham which is much bigger and has a huge variety of traps.

The gun that's kick-started this licence drive is this semi-vintage Baikal which I've been offered for a very reasonable £180 because the owner is a good friend. It looks clean as a whistle inside and out, doesnt feel too slack/worn out and is about the right length for me. And, it's something different as a starter gun from a Miroku or a Beretta Silver Pigeon whilst being half the price!

First time post in this thread, after a bit of advice. Dropped off my letter at my GP as part of my SC renewal 3 weeks back. Just had my second reminder from Cheshire police so thought I best chase the GP. Short answer from them is they no longer do references, arse. I am not worried if my SC expires as I can transfer my shotgun over to family while I get it sorted, but what is the score with getting a reference if your GP says jog on? Doesn't seem to be much info about this on the BASC website.

My wife has had to use a company called medcert because her doctor wanted to charge a fortune. Whilst your doctor can refuse to do a referral by law they have to release the records to you.

I can’t say Medcert we’re brilliant but speaking with members at our gun club this appears to be a bit of a one off and nobody else has had an issue.

Basically her doctors wouldn’t release the records to medcert. Of course when reminded they had to by law they then said they had to be released to my my wife. Of course they never told her this. So the med records sat at the surgery receptionists desk for 12 weeks and medcert never bothered chasing them up or letting my wife know they were having issues.

Eventually my Mrs lost her rag with the whole lot of them and put a rocket up there arse and things got sorted pretty quickly.

So maybe try medcert.

I did 8 game seasons with a gun like that. I am as good a shot with it as the guys with £4k Guns.
I've bought a Kofs now, relegating the Baikal to ugly-second-child status, but if the weather is poor and I'm out with the gang, the trusty Russian comes out and gets the job done.
