Very sad news indeed. He was a very decent all rounder who was one of the players who tried and unsurprisingly never quite managed to live up to the exploits of ITB.
RIP.

I dont know what a test contract is worth but he must be pretty gutted, but was not unexpected
He’s not been anywhere near the test side all summer and it’s hard to see how he gets back in on current form. Not at all unexpected for me. He’s got one of the worst ever %’s of a test batsmen of bowled as a dismissal. Something like 5th on the all time list ! Courtney Walsh was fourth. Test contract is worth £475k according to Atherton in The Times. He’s got all the ability in the world but has got a technical problem which needs sorting out. The hard thing is for Barstow he needs runs in red ball cricket which he obviously doesn’t get to play very much. When you look at the test batting line up we finished the summer with the big question is when Stokes comes back to No 5 where does everyone else go.
Burns
Sibley
Crawley
Root
Pope
Buttler
Root and Buttler are nailed on selections and Pope and Crawley look like two of the best young batsmen England have had in years. Personally I think Sibley and Burns are the most vulnerable as I reckon there’s a chance Crawley moves to open the batting when Stokes is back in the side....but that probably means Root batting at No 3 which he doesn’t like but on this year’s form he is no longer England’s outstanding batsmen so not sure the batting order should work around him. They could make Stokes the fourth bowler so adding another batsmen but I think that is asking too much of him given he plays all formats of the game.
Bairstow’s best chance of getting back in the side is an injury to Buttler.
England apparently confident of the winter tour’s going ahead which is great news.

Sadly Wood misses out too, which I missed, and doubt whether he will get many more chances with Anderson, Broad, and Archer ahead of him for selection, and a history of injury may go against him in future Test sides.
As for Stokes, he will be replacing Pope at 5 as I can't see Root batting at 3 to displace Crawley. Possible for Pope to bat 3, I suppose, if the form of Burns/Sibley/Crawley drops away or an injury occurs?

Agree with everything you say except the bit in bold. Foakes will step into the 'keepers position if Buttler is unavailable.

Wood will go to Australia for The Ashes without a doubt in my mind. Foakes should get the call but unless it’s in India where spin is so important I can see the selectors going for Bairstow...which in my opinion is wrong. I think Sibley will get found out against better class attacks and the Australians will torment him I think. They’ll bowl 90 mph back of a length 6 inches outside off stump and wait to see what he’s got. Sibley scores slowly even in first class cricket which means I think when it’s a world class attack his scoring will be glacial.
I think potentially at some stage in the next 18 months the England batting line up will be
Burns
Crawley
Root
Pope
Stokes
Buttler
Pope is a one in every ten years talent for England and Crawley’s potentially the same...I don’t think either get dropped and unless Root makes a lot of runs over the winter I think they may ask him to move to No 3...he’s always been adamant that he wants to bat at No 4 but he was the stand out batsman and captain...I don’t think he’s the stand out batsman right now. I’d argue Stokes is the best No 5 in world cricket and probably England’s best batsman.
Meanwhile, tomorrow, Saturday 3rd of October, is T20 Finals Day.
Or possibly not, given the weather forecast. Sunday is the Reserve Day, and doesn't look much better.
Which is a shame. One of English cricket's showpiece days, usually a carnival atmosphere, fans packed in and wearing fancy dress, the Mascot Derby, Bumble doing his thing, etc.
All reduced at a miserable day at Edgbaston, no fans, cold, windy, rainy, a dismal end to a rather strange summer of cricket.

Random question: Would a top IPL team beat a top international T20 team in a T20..?
No.I've really got into T20, I love the really close games, where you can never predict who's going to win until the final ball of the second innings.
It is all about fine margins, saving a boundary here, nicking an extra run there, a dot ball is applauded and a maiden can be priceless. I played my first T20 last month and really enjoyed it, even though the winning boundary passed through the position I had just vacated in the field (we had all been instructed to come in and pressurise the batsman).

Watching the T20 finals?
Incredibly, the ground staff have got the ground playable, so well done to all involved!
Sadly, Glos drew the short straw batting first in the semis and Surrey qualified for the final without too much trouble.
Better game in the 2nd semi?
95 is a decent target off 11 overs in these conditions but, I favour Notts to win this one!
