Love it or hate it the IPL starts today 14.30 GMT
The Gaffer has earned his retirement
As regards the IPL compared to the 100 I bloody love it.

Faff du Plessis isn't hanging around. It's like watching a highlights package. Kohli on 1 from 2 balls, duP 30 from 17

As it's raining again I thought I'd watch one of the IPL games on TV. Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals. Good fun so far! biglaugh

If we had been adventurous with the T20, we did invent it after all, we could have something similar here but instead they invented the 100 which is basically loathed by just about everyone and copied by none!

There has been some good games so far. Sunrisers posting biggest ever run total was great.

Not a fan of Hardick being booed by the MI fans though. It's not his fault Rohit was removed from the captaincy. Although then losing every game so far isn't going to win him any fans.

The few England players out there aren't exactly looking good. Bairstow had an OK knock in the last game but the two previous went for 8 and 9. Butler is in not a good place.

Rather annoyingly my Sky has gone tits up and while most sports channels are ok Cricket isn't working. Can watch on Sky Go on my laptop but its not the same. Happened after a windy day so assume dish has moved. Waiting on engineers visit.

Im amazed they have managed to get the grounds ready. I know obviously county is very different to club but our groundsman hasnt been able to do anything as its a complete bog.

In other news I see Sunack has found a few bob to help grassroots cricket.

I recently started coaching myself. Can see how hard it is to get kids engaged, we dont have enough people. space or kit either. What annoys me is the ECB wont let the coaches go beyond a Level 2 qual in a club setting. The Level 2.5/3 qualifications you can only do if you are working at county pathway level. The problem is that the L1/2 courses are very basic, and only really cover the basic ethos of getting kids involved and enjoying it, it doesnt teach you how to deliver specific skills. Its all let them play and encourage them. Which is fine if you are coaching all stars or dynamos where they dont need to be learning deep skills. But I coach the U13/15s. These can mostly already play and want to enhance their skills. In some areas I can use my own experience, I bowl pace so can help with that. But I know little about spin bowling and so cant help those, and cant access the training and qualifications to give me the skills required to coach them. Seems very narrow minded to restrict that level of training, so many kids cant get to county pathway level because they havent had enough training up front and so are stuck. Its not like the ECB pay for these courses, you have to pay out of your own pocket so dont see why we cant do them

Congrats on being a coach !

I didn’t know that about the ECB Level 3 qualification, as you say it seems daft that you have to be coaching in a pathway to be able to get that qualification. My son plays county U15’s, the coach that runs his age group is a “coach educator” for the county….I’ll ask him about it next time I see him.

You’re point about kids “being stuck” is very true, I know at the county my son is at one of the concerns they have is the kids who are nearly good enough to make a pathway squad say when they are 12 or 13 then really struggle to keep pace with the boys who do make it because they won’t have had access to the same level of coaching throughout a season. So come the next year’s selection the job is even harder for them…they may well be more talented but may develop slightly later so they miss that chance to “get on the escalator”

It really is a very difficult/expensive sport to progress in…pretty much every kid in my son’s age group gets one to one coaching away from the county pathway which is obviously expensive and is also a big time commitment.

That would be good to hear if he has any perspective on it. On the Northamptonshire website for the level 2.5/5 course it says open to anyone with a valid DBS and a Level 2 qual. But Bucks cricket said no way when someone in our club approached them about it. Not sure if Bucks are being over zealous or Northamptonshire's website is missing a crucial piece of information

Well that's a coincidence. My son plays for Northants ! Might well be the Northants website to be honest Bucks are pretty well run from what I know. I did look it up last night, ECB website indicated what you said about pathway participation for Level 3. Not due to see him for another couple of weeks but I'll try and find out before.

Saw him play many times around Kent as a cricket mad sprog in the late 70s.

On his day he was unplayable. I remember one day at Canterbury watching him from the upper tier of the stand directly behind him, he was turning it square at medium pace, cartwheeling people's stumps.

Lovely man as well, RIP Deadly.
