I'd speculate the explanation will probably turn out to be quite simple...I'd guess Cotto had been intending to relinquish the belt after the fight anyway - either because he's going back down to Light-Middle, is retiring, or just doesn't want to be tied into a fight with Golovkin - and as the terms of the fight with Alvarez are already agreed and it doesn't affect Alvarez anyway (given the WBC has confirmed that if he wins the fight, he wins the belt), Cotto's just decided to save himself $300k...Edited by Yiliterate on Wednesday 18th November 12:45

and interestingly, the WBC have said that should canelo win his is mandated to fight golovkin next! now i would pay good money for that!......if cotto wins i guess golovkin will fight for the strap vacant but against who i don't knowEdited by Yiliterate on Wednesday 18th November 12:45

I've often wondered what it would be like for an ordinary bloke like me (6'-ish, a bit overweight, not at all fit) to get a 'playful' tap/jab from someone like Klitschko or Fury or Haye - would I just feel it and take a step back or would I end up in a heap on the floor?
a playful tickle would probably feel like walking into a lamp post. a hard shot, or at least hard enough to drop you, usually lands without you seeing it. that's the real skill, disguising what you are doing and making someone move to your will so you can land the shot they don't see.i watched david price hit a heavy bag and the sound it made i don't think i could replicate unless i had a baseball bat in my hand. and i've got a fair dig on me as well.
when klitschko landed that left hook on pulev it sounded like a shotgun blast.
if a trained world class heavyweight punched me or you in the face you wouldn't know anything about it until you woke up!

I've just made a mental note not to ask for a playful tickle from the next heavyweight boxer I bump into tuscaneer said:

Again, he's pretty candid in his views on the likely outcome of a re-match with Ward...

i got a playful tickle off a bona fide heavyweight once( one of the guys that used to spar pricey)....i hit him in the stomach with a punch i thought might have been a touch heavy handed. he didn't flinch, and it felt like punching a wall!!........anyway, he tickled me back.in the face. it felt like i had pins and needles at the back of my skull....

so who have we all got this weekend?
canelo stops cotto late

crolla squeaks past perez/ or maybe the other way around!
Two other fights to keep your eyes open for at Bantamweight...canelo stops cotto late
murray outpoints abraham
crolla squeaks past perez/ or maybe the other way around!
Lee Haskins vs Randy Caballero for the IBF world title. Slightly worried that the occasion might get to Haskins but, if he's on song, he skillful enough and unconventional enough to give anyone headaches...really hope he can do himself justice.
Jason Booth vs Ryan Burnett for the British title. Jason Booth's best days are a long way behind him and has been 'retired' for quite some time so not expecting much from him. However, the attraction is Ryan Burnett - he's trained by Adam Booth, who is adamant he's the most talented fighter he's ever been involved with...and given he's currently got Eubank jr and Andy Lee in his stable (as well as Haye and Groves previously) that's a pretty bold statement to make in respect of a fighter who has yet to win a major senior title either as an amateur or pro! Looking forwrad to seeing him...
