Hoka Zinal?

I've got some Mafate Speed which are a little bit "scaled down" trail shoes but the Zinal is even more so.

Depending on the time of year you may be OK in road shoes

Just re-posting this as:

Can anyone recommend a pair of race shoes that can handle some light off road, grass tracks and forest pathways as well as tarmac. The race I am doing is a marathon on mixed terrain all hills and descents are on tarmac but about 8-10 miles of non pavement.
I would just go with road shoes as it is majority on tarmac. Even if it's in the winter you'll be fine on light off road. If it was running up a mountain or through mud bogs i'd say otherwise.

Thanks so far. I did a similar type of route in my Hoka rocket x at the weekend and they werent good enough at the speed I need to run at.

SO maybe I should be asking what carbon race shoe has the best grip?

A mate loves his hoka tecton, I think, carbon plated trail shoe. Might be worth a look. I tried off road in my hoka carbon x3 and they are too road biased for even light tail work. In my opinion.

Late to the party...but another +1 for the Tecton X
Ran a marathon in mine at the weekend - along the thames path on Saturday - big puddles, mud, slushy gritty gravel, and a few paths - and they were faultless

1:28:30 in the Farnborough HM this morning. Happy with that as new pb and 1st time sub 90. It was minus 7 at the start so quite chilly.

Well done.

I’ve got a few PBs in the cold. Always think I end up running the first two k quickly so as to warm the hands … and then try not waste a good start, so have to keep pushing. But minus 7 might be a bit too cold for me…

My training plan to my first marathon starts tomorrow. Excited to get into it and find out some things about myself along the way. Part of me wants to skip the earlier stages but I can see the plan slowly but surely builds up over the 18 weeks. And this time I'll actually do the recommended strength exercises as clearly they aren't included for fun.

Think it's time to break out the new, boxed, pair of Novablast 3s that have been sat beside my desk for the past few weeks as a celebration.

New shoe day is always good! What marathon are you doing?

I've done 22 runs in the last 18 days so have just had 2 rest days. Will kick my next block off with a 10km TT tomorrow am and a few 800's in the afternoon.

Just up the road from me, stuff like this fascinates me even if sadly I'm not fit enough to be quite this mad just yet.

Speaking of which, what's the best way to seek out 'alternative' events like this? The 'Fallout' one where you need to get away 40 miles from a point before being killed/eliminated by nuclear fallout looks like my sort of thing, I also had one bookmarked a few years back where its 5k every hour for something like 10 hours, game over if you didn't make the start line on the hour. I'd be fit enough now to walk that quite comfortably, those events appeal to me far more than a straight ultra.

Brilliant - you’ll have an amazing time! I’m halfway through an 18 week training plan for the Paris Marathon myself. I’m using a Ben Parkes plan by the way as I find him super enthusiastic and encouraging! Yes, the strength sessions aren’t really included for fun - I’ve found that to my cost in the past! smile

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Thanks

Rob

Do an event and speak with the nutters that are also doing it, and you start to hear about all sorts of nonsense. Your level of 'normal' tends to change smile

There are loads of backyard ultras as well; they're pretty cheap to put on.
