Anyone doing the Manchester 10k Sunday.

Only entered a couple of weeks ago after being egged on by my daughter who is running with her work.

Haven't done one in years (15 I think) but do regular park runs (24:30-25 mins) and shorter 2-3k runs.

Longest training run in the short time I've had is 8km in 43.33 and it felt ok once I got into it.

Have a knee issue which gives me pain but hopefully that will be ok.
Invested in some decent (ish) running shoes which has helped.

Advice for preparing this week?

Was going for a couple of steady short runs and a maybe a bike ride or 2 which I do anyway.
Trying to eat well this week with plenty of liquids.

Have a 12:30 start time, staying at an AirBNB about 40 mins walk to the start.

Cheers

Sounds spot on basically just do a bit less than you usually do in order to feel 'fresh' on race day.

Don't eat or do anything new this week.

did a cheeky 17km over lunch and managed to dodge the inclement weather so win/win.

Ive been using the much maligned Nike app on my apple watch to track the run. i dont see it as being as bad as alot of forums etc make it out to be.

anyone else use it?

My mate does, has no complaints, he also has strava and garmin. I used to use adidas coach 10ish years ago, I really liked it and how it would encourage you and set realistic goals. Thing of the past now I think!

I’ve been using it since 2008, however for many years that has just been to upload data to it via Garmin Connect (along with Strava), rather than actually record runs using it. The Nike+ Sportwatch was my first GPS watch.

Did a 10k last week in 55 minutes which was around what I wanted - slowly working back towards 50.

Anyway, I then took Friday,Saturday, Sunday and Monday off and barely did a thing. Not sleeping well, plus also drank a lot of alcohol on Saturday and ate way too much.

Yesterday, I felt pretty good. Went out for a long run. By the 2nd mile I was struggling really badly. My legs felt like led, my calves hurt, I felt really sluggish, tired, heavy and just uncomfortable.

I wish someone had warned me that drinking too much and eating rubbish didn't help running. (but seriously, shows the importance of keeping active, moving, stretching and of course living a healthy lifestyle)

Folks,

I am going to start running again, I did a half marathon 13 years ago, but stopped after that.

I need a pair of running shoes, but don't want to spend a fortune as I may give up after a few months

I popped into my local running shop (Runners Need - part of Cotswold Outdoor) in Inverness, but the cheapest shoe was over £100

I was going to see what Sports Direct have as a cheaper option, and if I'm enjoying running after a few months, buy a decent pair.

Any recommendations.

It will be all road running, aiming to do another 1/2 marathon early next year. I'm 52, medium build, if that makes any difference.

thanks

It's not possible to recommend a brand as whether they'll be suitable or not completely depends on your feet and what suits them

If you're starting running again at a low entry point in terms of distance, just pick a decent brand with the support and cushioning that you need. That could be Nike, Adidas, Brooks, NB, whatever.

IMO, too many people buy running shoes on brand, rather than what actually works for them. I have Nike feet, so I buy Nike. I do a lot of miles, so I invest in good Nike trainers.

But I started running by doing 5ks in a pair of Reebok Classics (don't do this) smile

Running shoes are quite personal and what suits one person might not necessarily suit you, so best to try some on if you possibly can.

In your position I'd go for a recognised brand - ASICS, New Balance, On, Altra, Brooks, Hoka off of the top of my head. Sports shoes direct generally have older models, which should be fine, at about half of that price. Go for at least half a size up from your regular shoes.

In general - be consistent and build up your mileage slowly - and definitely incorporate some core strength sessions into your routine, focussing on hips and glutes. Going from zero to a half marathon without this is asking for an injury

Good luck!

I'm doing a 10m mile road race Sunday. I've only ever done one 10 miler off road many years ago. I've done plenty of road 10km and half marathons. What would people suggest for pacing? I suppose obvious answer is somewhere between 10k and half marathon pace but I'm thinking to start at HM pace for the 1st couple of miles then slowly increase to 10k pace by halfway.
Last month I did a 40:38 10k and a 1:29:54 hm in March so I'd like to get around 67 minutes for 10 miles.

sportshoes is a great site for both choice and bargain prices. I’ve bought from them many times and always had good service.

A middle of the road shoe like the Nike Pegasus or Saucony Ride might be a good place to start as they’re designed to appeal to a very wide range of runners.

I think Hoka also let you run in them for a while and still be able to return them as well - https://www.hoka.com/en/gb/30-day-guarantee.html

They are sized quite small though, but I found they really comfy when I got the size right.

I had several pairs through Pro-direct running and returned 3 or 4 set until I found a pair that fitted me right, they also have quite a good selection of heavily discounted shoes there.

Also Start Fitness. They have some great deals on Brooks Ghosts at the moment.

Got the running bug again now that the weather has turned. 8th run back and did a PB of 23.03 5k this morning (whilst definietly still drunk from last night). Really pleased with that, weights in the gym has certainly helped my performance.

Now time to go after my 10k PB of 47.35....

Started properly running again start of April. Used to run a bit on and off but I have never done a park run or any kind of event etc.

First week of April was struggling to get around 3k.

Now got myself down to a PB best 5k of 26.25 and 10k of 55.44 during May.

Managed to run three 10k’s this month, all getting progressively quicker to that PB above.

Treated myself to a new Forerunner 55, as my old Forerunner 10 was very dated and the strap broke half way round one run so had to hold it. 55 is a really nice bit of kit for the price.

Really want to improve on that 5k time and eventually get down below 25 minutes. How is the best way to approach it?

Interval training is the best way to do it.

Its really quite simple to explain but less easy to execute
- Don't get injured..... if you are feeling injuries, either don't run or run very easy

- Every week do 1 x tempo run (3-4 miles at 20-30 seconds slower than race pace
- Every week do 1 x speed session..... for 5k I would focus on 6 x 800 or 8/10 x 400
- Every week do a longer run at 1-2 min/mile slower than race pace
- Any other runs, do them much slower than race pace

If building up mileage, only increase by 10% each week
Every 4 weeks, have an easier week in terms of mileage

Taking a new approach to sorting the MTSS/shin splints

Rather than worry about intensity being the aggravating factor, my physio has suggested we try running at whatever speed I fancy for a few weeks, but keeping the time on feet very short. The thinking being that running dynamics are better at a higher pace than a slow plod, so actively conditioning my running legs at running paces is worth a try.

Once run in so far. Not conclusive.... but nice to be chipping along again. The cycling I've been doing in the mean time has definitely benefited my running.
