4.26:44 at London last Sunday. Pretty pleased with that for my 1st marathon. Hoping for sub 4 next time.

Bridgwater bolt 10 k today in 45.43.

Pleased with that as at my usual quick club run i average 8 min miles or just under and today my average was 7.23 with a couple of decent hills on the course.

Learnt a bit of a painful lesson on my long run this weekend. Near the end my legs felt really good and I ended up running the last 5k way faster than I should have. Man my legs have hurt from it and I've had to take an extra rest day to recover

Good effort! McMillan calls these fast-finish long runs. There are a few variations, like do the first third of the run slower than marathon pace, the middle third at target marathon pace and the final third at half marathon pace, or ramping up until the last ten minutes are all out, as fast as you can go. They're one of the toughest workouts and while they have a place, are certainly not a weekly event - they take a lot out of you.

Would be worth thinking about what you did differently leading up to, or on the long run too - did you eat more, or less on the run, hydrate better the day before etc. Having good legs is a good thing!

I had a funny old weekend. 23.29 parkrun with the buggy, a good 90 secs faster than planned, followed by 30km on Sunday which was beset by stomach problems and then to add insult to injury, my watch called it 30.1 km, but Strava cut it to 29.9 km, meaning I didn't get my best ever 30 km time. Grrr.

I've always been told to run the last part of a LSR faster. smile

Maybe not a 5K. But say 15mins of a 2H

Shouldn't have skipped the day. But gone out and gone S-L-O-W-E-R than you would have done imo

A few weeks ago we talked about running in heat. Today it was 25C when I went for my run and I was not well hydrated (think drinking 2 litres of water a day rather than 4-5. I paid for it in my LT part and got home having had 500ml on the run, and immediately drunk 2 litres with electrolytes in and spent 20 minutes literally dripping. My performance was 10-15 seconds a mile slower than I would expect for that effort due to the energy being used to cool the body..... and it's not even hot here yet

I also won a race last Friday night at the Rolex Kentucky 3 day event. Not a great time, but again, it was run in 28C and very humid, so expect the times to be 25-30 seconds slower for 5k

I've always been told I overpronate so I wear orthotics in neutral trainers, yet I seem to be wearing the outside of the heel down not the inside edge?

Are my orthotics working to well and rolling my ankle out to much?
I'm not an expert, but I overpronate and it is the outside of the trainer that wears down quickest. This is because I land on the outside of the foot and roll inwards. The outside therefore is the area that wears the quickest.

I guess everyone is different, but that would explain the wear you are seeing.

Well, my Salomon Wings Pro 2s arrived today - no excuses to not hit the trails now.

I'll do a similar build up from the 3 month Half marathon training I did and start to very the terrain once I've built a basic base.

Only bit of kit I need now is a vest/light backpack to carry the basics in.

Decathlon do a pretty reasonable race vest , you can carry 2 bottles in the front a bladder in the back and a big pocket to stuff a coat .

Not the best but really good for the money.

Thanks - Had a quick look and there a couple that are good value until I add 20% plus for delivery as I don't live anywhere near a branch, Asda or the locker thing.

I'll have a look about smile

Really ? pretty sure i've only paid around £5 postage with them and even if it is 20% if the vest works and is comfy why risk buying some cheap crap from sports soccer?

Another idea is running gear buy and sell on facebook , just bung a post up saying your after a cheap race vest.

I was in Decathlon the other day. Picked up a collapsible water bottle. See how I get on.

Any chance you have a link to the top? Thanks.

I've seen a lot of those Decathlon vests at the sorts of races I run in. Always been put off my the lack of enough front pockets (I want soft bottles and plenty of nutrition up front) but for the money they've got to be worth a look.

Probably worth a nosy on eBay/Gumtree though - I'd imagine that a fair percentage of people like the principle but go on to buy Salomon or UD vests (at 2-4 times the cost.) I winced at the price of my Salomon vest but it's been worth every penny.

If you use the bladder you can cram a lot in the front bottle holders and there are zipp pockets at the bottom of the vest.
