How bigs the bag bit on the back of those decathlon vests? I'm currently run commuting using a small (maybe 20 litre) rucksack to carry my work clothes home and keep wondering about getting something more comdortable.
It's stretchy probably won't get a full set of work clothes and shoes in though.Tell me what you want to stick in there and i'll if it fits later , when i did the grizzly i had a knee brace , waterproof coat , hat and 3 packets of oreos stuffed in there.
Ultra runner types -
i seem to have been talked into a 31 miler in july.
My longest run this year was 19 miles at the grizzly , the ultra is 10 extra miles but less climbing than the grizzly.
Spoke to a few at my club and they say the key is back to back runs so either sat/sun then a medium 6-9 miles tuesday and 5 miles on thursday.
Would dumping thursday but doing 5 extra on tuesday work ?
This is new territory for me but i'm a lazy sod and never push as hard as i can in races so maybe bigger distances are my thing rather than speed?

Has anyone taken part in this race before

People starting off at the same time around the world. In Melbourne the start time will be 9pm and you run along the motorway. Not sure if it sounds really cool or just a bit gimmicky.
Plus I'm not sure I fancy running 15 ish K then sitting on a bus and cramping up back towards the start line. Its just the fact the start line is just down the road from me that I'm tempted.

Anyone else interested in the Sub 2 hr attempt?

Also partly car related as oddly they do 17 laps around Monza...no idea why they picked their?
I hope they do manage it but honestly don't think they will!

No but I'm doing it on Cambridge on Sunday. David Coulthard driving the car apparently. I'm only expecting to do 6-8k though as we're pushing a friend in a wheel chair. egor110 said:

For a 31 miler you don't really need much more than marathon type training IMHO. I've done ~40 marathons & ultras, mostly in the 30-40 mile category, but up to 100km and 100 miles as well.i seem to have been talked into a 31 miler in july.

For the "shorter" ones, marathon type training but with longer midweek and weekend runs works for me just fine. For the longer stuff, I was doing a 25-30 miler followed by a 15-25 miler or thereabouts. I'm sure this wouldn't do you any harm for a 31 miler but might rob you of some pace. Those "back to back" runs are on consecutive days.
I think you are suggesting a long run Saturday OR Sunday, followed by a short run Tuesday and Thursday? IMHO you will want more miles in your legs, but everybody is different.
If you are trying to do this on 3-4 runs per week, how about:
Sunday: Long run, building up to 3-4 hours duration
Monday: Medium Long run, building up to 2-3 hours duration
Tues/Weds: Active Recovery - 30 mins
Thurs/Fri: Shorter run - perhaps 2m warm up, 3m marathon pace, 1m cool down - to try and keep some speed in the legs
As an aside, there's a sub 2 hour marathon attempt on Saturday. To keep it as PH as possible, it's at Monza

I'm quite interested in the sub 2 hour attempt, but there are a number of factors which I think will prevent it happening:
- 4:35 per mile is quite different from 4:41 per mile where the record is today and at that pace, 6 seconds is a lot
- pacing is key and they will need a lot of good runners to make this work
- The artificial conditions will help, but I don't see them helping nearly 3 minutes
I get why they are doing it, but I still think that we are 30+ years away from seeing sub 2 in a race, if not 50 years. It's effectively a set up time trial and good luck to them, but it has limited relevance for running as it will not be a WR. Additionally, the test run showed that at the end, they did not work together which would have helped them
I think they will get through halfway in 59:40 ish and thereabout 22 miles in will stop as they are not on target, or if they run the full distance, it will be 2:05 ish as the quick first half will impact them (We'd all love to run 1:05 for a half, so its still amazing)

I guess it's roughly in the middle of the world time zone wise so better for more people to see it and presumably they think there's a higher chance of the weather being OK.http://www.runnersworld.com/2-hour-marathon/how-to...
Paddy Power says 1/4 - over 2 and 5/2 - under 2 so although they are biased toward failing, it's not like it's 100/1 on success.
It's a big jump from the current world record, they need to be about 1k ahead of that, but I've heard it suggested that there will be pacing teams who do a few laps each so the main runners are paced all the way, plus more easily controlled fuelling than in a city marathon and no tight corners, maybe it is possible.
Presumably Nike think it's do-able or they wouldn't try (unless they reckon it's huge publicity whatever happens?)
They might set the (car free) lap record though!
I think the lactate build up will be the main issue. They will have practiced running at 4:35 when tired but it's a massive challenge keeping that pace from mile 18 onwards if you have been running slightly too fast building up lactic acid in the first 18 miles.
I think it's a very long shot and if I was a betting person, would gladly take the odds

I've also been following this and will probably get up to watch the 2nd half.
I'm not a big fan of Nike, but fair play to them for trying. I'm actually surprised they are trying as PR it seems a risky thing for a big corp to do and a potentially no win situation; if they fail, which seems likely the publicity wont be great but if they win it win invariable start the doping rumors....
