I'm loath to move from Asics because they've been so trouble free, but I hear good things about the Salomons and Inov8 shoes and loads of others too now - LaSportiva seem to be doing some good shoes which is new to me.

I think my issue is I often only find out that they don't suit after 30-40 miles or five or so runs, at which point, they're expensive ornaments. I have a pair of Speedcross 3's which just rub me raw. I want to love them (bright yellow, orange sole), but they kill my left foot.

Gave my trail shoes a scrub ahead of Sunday's race. Quite disappointed that they're holing in the inner sole and heel after 430kms. OK, 430 hard kms, but still. Asics FujiAttack4 - Boo. I have 80 racing miles in the next five weeks. Not the time to be breaking in new shoes.
Unfortunately my inov8 212s only seem to last a season, but offer so much when using them I don't begrudge the replacement cycle - they are supposed to be developing a graphene laced sole this year so it'll be interesting to see whether that gives them a bit more life.
The graphene inov8s look interesting, but I have had a few pairs of inov8s and they have all worn out in the uppers way before the soles look like they have worn at all.

Interesting article suggesting minimal shoes can help with balance, strength and foot accuracy.

Granted the author has links to the barefoot 'community', but she does reference peer reviewed papers to back up her assertions.

I think minimal/barefoot/VFF is the optimal way to run, it just takes time to get there...it's been on my to-do list for years. biggrin
People who do it usually have the calves of an elephant.

BTW - highly rec'd the GL3D tenohfive, right up your alley.
That's a good shout, I've been thinking about scratching the MM itch - I've gotten lazy following .gpx files and runners that know the course and I've never used a compass in anger during a race.
I've got no 'big,' races planned until around this time next year, so it might be a good time to do something different.

Even within manufacturers the fit can vary. Speedcross 3 & 4 - no issues. But one of the Sense range I found far too narrow.

Some shoes I don't expect to get excessive mileage out of - if I get 500km out of them because they're softer and less durable (but more comfortable) I can accept that. So I'd expect that from my Hoka Challenger 3's, but not from my La Sportiva Mutants.

I did find my SC4's comfortable for 30 odd miles, then they started rubbing and got quite painful. I stuck with them out of bloody mindedness and as I wanted to save mileage on my more race orientated and terrain specific trail shoes. So I'd chuck them on but only for <10km runs, and rotate amongst other shoes. They stopped hurting and at some point (maybe 200-300km) they started to get really comfortable - I almost wore them for my last race over my Mutants (which are my go-to mixed terrain shoe.) Weird.

I've gone barefoot for my daily shoes now with this exact thought in mind. I want to eventually go to a more barefoot trail shoe once my feet are up for it.

I wear 5-fingers in nicer weather (as they are pretty much just a mesh upper) and have a pair of Freet bootees which I wore all winter other than on the days with snow. The Freet have been supremely comfortable, but I'm not that impressed with the inner and the fabric 'insole' is starting to lift and hole in places.

I'm looking at some VivoBarefoot shoes which appear to be better made, but they aren't cheap. I'll probably wait till they appear discounted on SportPursuit again

Pacing a mate to his first marathon this Sunday. Stroud Trails. More like 27.5 miles and 1,000m of gain. A bold debut.

a few years ago vibram had a lovely leather boot for sale, wish I'd gotten it now, my leather KSOs are too cold outside summer months
but perfect for gym, deadlifts, squats etc

Mine are Vivo. I'd suggest ordering both your size and the size below to try. Mine have loosened a lot and I think I could get away with a smaller size.

Any suggestions for shoes instead of vibram five fingers? I really wanted some, but my stupid 2nd toes are longer than my big toes and so don’t fit - I’ve tried sizes above my size and still no good - the toe is forced to curl and the top rubbed so badly that it took the skin off within minutes frown.

I would like to try barefoot running - I already runs off the forefoot. The VFFs also would have been good to wear around the house or to wash the car etc.

Thanks

Just sticking my oar in, you measure VFFs for the longest toe you have, so unless you were in the largest shoes they do there’s no reason for your 2nd toes to not fit. Of course then none of your other toes might fit smile The last is a particular shape and mine, for example, mean my little toes barely go in the toe pocket without a bit of fiddling. My second toes are longer than my big toes by a couple of mm.

Tough going at the Shakespeare Half Marathon this morning.

Felt I had a sub-83 inside me and went off as such. Undulating course with plenty of left and right turns - some in quick succession. Ended up working with the second place woman to try and reel 1st place in who was only some 20 seconds away. After 10 miles of road running, we suddenly had almost 5k of off-road course to contend with, which just seemed to go on and on as it was straight as a die. Lost about 10 seconds per mile on this section as traction underfoot was harder to come by.

Finished 21st with a PB of 83:39 wanting to throw up. Slightly disappointed with the time in all honesty, but I'm satisfied I left everything out there as when I went to kick with about 200m remaining, there was nothing and only nausea.

Anyone do the London10Mile today?

Drove past Richmond Park in the morning and noticed loads of cones, but didn't know what they were for. Will need to put it in diary for next year as read up on it, and seems to be a good family day out with fun runs and other entertainment alongside, so sorry I missed it frown

Top running everyone - great to hear some solid results.

5.55 at Stroud Trails this weekend. Well pleased to pace my mate round, though his knee went at about 19 miles, so it was a run-ouch-jog-ouch-walk in from there. Really solid first half though, with plenty in the tank myself. I could have done another 20km easily, which bodes well for Race to the Tower. Got my nutrition spot on for the first time in ages too. Now for some rest.

thanks, but i should have added that as UK13, i tried their largest size (and many of their models only go up to 46 - some are 47 and i take 48/49 in my other trainers) and still had problems. frown. apart from my 2nd toe, the rest of the fit in their largest size seemed fine mad - which is frustrating, as i love the look and idea of them.

Has anyone found any benefit in paid-for coaching or training to go faster, or has following books or training plans, coupled with your own will, been enough?

I've recently bought the Brad Hudson 'Run Faster' book (still to read it) with a view to improving pace in 5k & 10k in 2019. I'm running bigger distances this year, next year I want to focus more on speed
