Inspired by a post about running a mile on the Parkrun thread, I went out last night and just ran a mile as fast as I could.
Annoyingly, Strava didn't pick it up as a mile as it still has my record from a while ago at 7:15, but TomTom says it was 1.02 miles at 6:41 so I'm saying it was a 6:40 mile! I'm happy with that, and it's a target to improve for the future.
Worryingly, a long term target of mine is a 20 minute 5k (can't be that long term as I'm 36 now...) and in the same run I got my 1k record at 3:59 so all I have to do is keep that pace up for another 16 minutes and I'll be golden...
Plenty of time to knock out sub 20, I'm 44 been running probably 3 years, ducked under 20 again this morning for first time this year.

Intervals and speed work are your friend to help you to sub 20. Good luck
Managed my first sub twenty last year, I was forty five at the time, just before putting my back out. Now chasing sub twenties again, although I find fell running more fun...

I must admit I find the 5k fast quite challenging I'd prefer to run further, working on my half and ultimately full times this year, got my half under 92 mins twice this year already hoping to get much closer to the sub 90 target.

But saying all that give me a trail/fell race over those any day of the week!

Ran the Derby Half today. Finished in a respectable time of 1:43, which is kind of what I expected after not really training properly.

Was very hot throughout. A few seem to be suffering, and an ambulance was called for one fella at about 11/12 miles. Hope he was ok.

Anyone else run in the heat today?

I'm not sure if this helps, but there's an old Chris Boardman quote from his TT days that I've always liked. Along the lines of going out at a pace and trying to judge if it's the right one:
Ask yourself - can I maintain this pace to the end?
If 'yes' - you're going too slow.
If 'no' - you're going too fast.
The answer you're aiming for is 'maybe.'
That's a fantastic quote! Will try and remember that one for the next big race.
Well, i managed it last tuesday. I started out on a 5.30/km for about the first half and ended up trailing off quite severely, ended up doing it in 1hr 26mins. Looks like i've got 11mins to cut down on so its a good starting point.

Well done on the time , especially if you have not trained too much.

Last year I wrote a post on running in the heat and it was all the basics like, hydrate well before the run, take water on the run if you can, slow down a little, your body is using energy to cool itself, hydrate and eat well afterwards, stretch the muscles as they may be deprived etc

Went for a run in a park yesterday at dusk.

Highly recommended for days you are feeling lazy, as anytime you stop to walk, you get surrounded by flying insects wanting to feast on you which makes you keep going laugh

I'm being bitten pretty much every single time I go out at the moment, probably because part of my usual route goes around a lake. Some of them are pretty painful as well frown

Need to get back to some safer dual carriageways or something

Same last week got bitten loads running near a river. Also had a run in with a herd of cows and a rather angry family of swans biggrin

Had a chest infection with bad cough and had to rest up for a few days. Did a long run whilst still suffering last week and did not do myself any favours.

not getting bitten, the bit I hate is when you plough through a cloud of them and have to hold your breath otherwise you end up with a lungfull of them

I've been asked to run with a local team, but as I'm working on Saturday, I'd only be able to do the overnight laps. However, I've an event to attend on the Sunday morning so I think it unlikely that I'll go, but you never know,

would take a bit of planning bearing in mind there's a max of 2 consecutive laps per runner

Give us a wave as you pass marshal point 2 (confusingly the first marshal point, just after 2km) between 6pm and midnight.

Plan to have some music on, we might remember to bring some jelly babies, and there's a disturbingly high chance that my wife will be dressed as a penguin (don't ask rolleyes)

Marlow 5k for me tonight and my main frustration is that Garmin is not transferring the runs to strava frown

I decided not to look at the watch and just got for it on a flat 5k course and it resulted in a massive PB (Course might have been short but is measured) in 17:01 on my watch which is nearly 40 seconds quicker than I've been before. I've done the work and just missed out on sub 17 which was the aim but very pleased to smash the PB. Still was only the 2nd V40 yikes but very pleased with the result.

I once went for a run at dusk in a creepy forest. There was an animal park next to it with lynxes and chickens are other scary animals. helped me keep the pace up, I was glad to get out!

Excellent work and very well done!

Shame you narrowly missed out on sub-17; did you have any idea how close you were in the closing stages?

Did not look at the watch at all, but just ran as hard as I could. Official results still to come to hopefully 17:00
