Marlow 5k for me tonight and my main frustration is that Garmin is not transferring the runs to strava frown

I decided not to look at the watch and just got for it on a flat 5k course and it resulted in a massive PB (Course might have been short but is measured) in 17:01 on my watch which is nearly 40 seconds quicker than I've been before. I've done the work and just missed out on sub 17 which was the aim but very pleased to smash the PB. Still was only the 2nd V40 yikes but very pleased with the result.
Great running jiffle, very good indeed beer

Tight ankle possible Achilles?

My left ankle has started to get tight when running.

My miles have dropped from earlier this year when I was easily running 3 days on the trot.

I've replaced my trainers incase they were old and no longer cushioned and using orthotics / no orthotics makes no difference.

Had a sports massage to loosen my calfs but next run and it's made no difference.

Any suggestions ?

Congratulations!

For me, the 16:59 is far more impressive than finishing position. At the sharper end of running ability, you'll have many more opportunities to win or rank highly, but to hit such a time goal, just wow.

I think with achilles injuries you need to strengthen by loading, usually through heel raises or similar. Probably best to see a physio and get it properly diagnosed and some tailored exercises to be honest.

yeah i'm going to try and get in to see a podiatrist , it's bloody hard work though as the good ones are booked up until end of july !

I've got no arches so was using orthotics with hoka's but i was wearing out the outsole so assumed my orthotics we're flinging my ankles out to much so stopped using with seemingly no problems.

Off road i don't really like using them as it feels like running in high heels but maybe i actually do need them after all ?

Annoying thing is first 1/4 of this year i'd do 15-20 on a sunday , then 8-9 mon , 6-7 tues and the same thursday , 2 off road runs and 2 road .

Now the last few months i've been doing 10-12 sunday , 6-7 tues , weds thurs split between 2 off road and 2 road , the only other thing that's changed is my speeds creeping up so from a nice easy 8-8.30 average in the last few months i've done a couple of road runs just under 7.30 so maybe that's it ?

Thanks, just proving it's possible to get older and quicker if you train a bit smarter.

Now for the 16:30 challenge

You mention a podiatrist, but I'd be inclined to try a good sports physiotherapist who will be able to assess your running on a treadmill. It may well be that your biomechanics are being thrown out by your arch problem and causing the issue, but they can tell you that for sure and advise how to address it - including arranging new orthotics if you need them. Then again it might just be a simple overuse injury that you need to strengthen and return to running gradually.

Good luck though - I know how frustrating a niggling injury can be

just like to say that's some awesome running right there thumbup - *if* i get sub 20 min for 5 km I'm chuffed. I can't imagine sub 19, let alone sub 17 - any drop in time gets proportionally harder the quicker you go hehe - just wanted to say congrats!

Thankyou. In 2013 I was told I would never run again but had an operation and spent 3 years doing gentle runs and Am now back doing the odd session so happy to just be running and the times are a bonus. At 43 there may not be too much more but I'll give it a go.

Last night someone cracked 25 minutes for the first time and their joy and excitement was something to behold. It puts into perspective that everyone's goals are important to them and breaking any target is a great thing.

I've managed to get a cancellation today with the podiatrist .

Took the last year and a halfs worth of trainers with me for him to check out .

So he said i 100% over pronate and need something to reduce that , said my sole obsession insoles were better than nothing so go back to using them for a month or 2 and see if there are any changes .

Also didn't like my hoka's far to much bulk especially once my insoles are in , said to stick to my inov8 roclites off road but still use my insoles.

Do many people run in racing style flats? Previously had the Pegasus 34 which gave up after Edinburgh, and picked up two new pairs as I focus on 10k and half’s.

Adidas PureBOOST DPR as they where £50 from Sweatshop, and I grabbed a pair of Nike LunarSpider LT-2 from Alton sports stand at the Yateley 10k tonight. Where apparently £85 but reduced to £35, and certainly a few years old.

Thought I might try a lighter shoe, then over winter spend some time looking more into brands, and styles.

I thought pegasus was a cushioned neutral shoe ?

Give puma ignites a go , there £30 and a responsive neutral trainer .

The Pegasus are a cushioned middle of the road shoe which I like and worked well for my marathon and previous half’s. Saw the Nike’s earlier today and for £35 thought I would give them a go. The PureBOOST are a bit more cushioned then a Boston. Thought would try a lighter shoe and see what the difference is.

Anyone at endure 24 this weekend ?

I'll be running in one of the mnd teams so decked out in orange/blue.
I'll be there in green and yellow. Running in a team of 6-8, depending on how many final numbers we get!

Not done it for 4 years so looking forward to it again.

First of the summer 5k series this evening. I've not been training much at all for the last year and dabbling in squash and cycling.

Tonight was more of a baseline and came in at 21:20. About 90 seconds slower than PB so a bit of work to do this summer then hopefully try and push for a sub 90 half in the autumn but I might have left it a bit late for that this year.

This.

A couple of weeks ago I paced a guy from my running club to 25 mins and he achieved a 24:37. The joy and happiness it brought him breaking 25 was great to see and made me feel fantastic helping him too smile

That is one of the things which makes the running community so good. My wife paced a lady to a 59:58 10k and they hugged her and wanted to buy her coffee and talked with so much excitement of achieving the goal. It's just about giving a little back and running enables that through parkrun, marshalling etc

I want to buy myself a new pair of running shoes - I'm currently using an 18 month old pair of Asics Gel Phoenix 6 but I'm not sure what ones to go for, I've narrowed it down to these two pairs but I'm unsure of the difference between them.

Any help choosing would be fantastic, thanks!

One provides motions control and support (the GT), one is neutral and aimed at mid-distance training. The GT would be closer to the Phoenix 6 IMHO.
