I've gone way off plan with my running over xmas , more off plan than i actually thought !

Last year was training up for my triple marathon in Cornwall , did that , did the exmoor stagger then 2 weeks later start of nov did another marathon in cornwall , no niggles no nothing just banging in the miles , back to back runs without any problem.

Then i went on a all inclusive holiday wink , work was mega busy over dec and i just couldn't be assed to run.

Jan my club did a 24 mile run over the quantocks to minehead then back on the steam train so i thought what better way to get back into , except a month and a half off and my glutes/hips are tight as fk , 14 miles in and i was done .

I knew i had put on weight so thought about 13 stone , turned out to be 13.11 ! , went back to club and couldn't keep up with my normal 8-8.30 group , wasn't to bad though i averaged 8.45.

So this dec i'll be doing that 3 miles a day thing to keep me ticking over .

Any happy or unhappy runners with results from the UTMB/TDS/CCC ballot today?
Me and my mate. Me, because I missed the second qualy race, so couldn't even enter. Bah. My mate because he was rejected in the ballot for the PTL. New plans required for us both.

You in for anything?
Got in on the first time for CCC which I wasn't expecting.
Really frustratingly though a commitment has come up between the entry and the ballot that means I can't make it though.

I'm thinking about going double or quits and aiming towards UTMB in a couple of years instead. I'm planning on doing some races that if I can get them done will give me the required points anyway, but no firm decisions yet.

First fell race of the year, out on the wiley windy moors above the Brontë house, and wet and windy it was. Six and a half miles, 1700ft of climbing, and four river crossings later I’m knackered.

It’s my first race after suffering shin splints in October, and I’m slow. I’ve just about got over a chest infection as well, and it all came together to leave me six minutes slower than last year. No shin pain though, so hopefully it’ll get faster from now...

I love fell running me...

It was a tad miserable, but at least I was only out for an hour, a couple of my mates opted to run the Trigger instead, from Marsden to Edale, running South on the Pennine Way, that was five to six hours.

Don't forget The Montane Spine races have also been running this weekend, the main race has been diverted off Pen-Y-Gent due to the 70mph winds on the summit, them boys and girls are hardcore.

I had a very bad December with me putting 8kg on weight on and only 2 runs for the whole month! Got back into running and circuit training and up to last Tuesday had run every day and already lost 4kg before disaster struck. Managed to roll my ankle out running which instantly ballooned up. Went straight to A&E due to the amount of swelling and pain and had a couple of X-rays which luckily showed no break. The nurse couldn't say if ligaments were ok as they don't use ultrasound anymore (?) so got diagnosed with a severe sprain.

Just under a week later and I can walk on it with not much pain, just feels a bit stiff. It is still very bruised though (see second pic). I am already climbing the wall with not being able to exercise though. Any idea if cycling on a turbo trainer would cause any issues? I was thinking of very low intensity spinning initially combined with the ankle exercises i've been given before starting to ramp up running in a couple of weeks if I can.

That must be incredibly frustrating.
WRT to other exercise, whilst the turbo is great for low impact aerobic work if it were me I'd still seek some medical advice. It's just not worth the risk.

For alternative exercise though you could use this period as an opportunity to develop your strength sessions. I really wouldn't underestimate how valuable that can be, both from a performance perspective and also from an injury prevention standpoint (hence why some refer to it as pre-hab.)
It's a good habit to get into, and if you're already doing it then you can even view the next month or two as training blocks where you're focusing on it.

Again though, whilst some core and posterior chain strength work will clearly not affect your ankle, things like deadlifts, squats etc might do. Strength work is something that can incorporate injured areas (so my physio tells me) but I'd still check specifics with a medical professional.

Ah - gutted for you. I'd done both my ankles in similar style. One's had two avulsion fractures, one undiagnosed, until the second one -

"you've done this before"
"er, no"
"yep - for sure, who x-rayed you?"
"you did"
awkward silence...

If it's still sore after a couple of weeks, go back and get checked out again.

Chin up - after the second one, I did intensive physio for four weeks and nightly cold/hot/cold/hot/cold soaks to flush it through, I strapped on hefty walking boots and enjoyed a two week walking trip in the Atlas Mountains. We'll not speak of how the big boots caused my feet to sweat so much I blistered my little toe and it degloved due to fluid build-up.

I found an Aircast was an excellent ankle support too - very unobtrusive.

That’s two months off running and Christmas for you, put a stone on without even thinking about it. Nice use of the old shopkeeper’s apostrophe though.

I never had this trouble when I was younger, but since getting into my late forties I have struggled to keep my weight down, and it's hard work dragging my belly up them hills...

When I was a run leader (which I really enjoyed btw) I used to modify my sessions if I had a massive range of abilities turn up. We used to do a lot of interval pyramids. 20 seconds fast, jog back to regroup, 30 seconds fast, jog back to regroup ... 40..50..60..50..40..30 you get the idea. That way everyone was running for the same amount of time and got the same rest periods, it just meant that Mo Farah covered a lot more ground than the less advanced runners.

If you find a really long hill it's even better as it's a tough session for everyone but no one ends up too far away.
Cheers - that's exactly what we're doing. Next week I'm going to start with the ministry of silly walks, AKA slow speed drills of high knees, gentle lunges, hurdles and bum kicks, then do the session you've suggested. Our range is fit 5-a-side footballers to ladies who have never run, so we're trying to avoid hills currently, in case we put off/kill someone!
Thanks again for the session - we did drills which provided some amusement and wobbling about, then 30/40/50/40/30 x 2 with a minute rest in between. Worked really well to generate a bit of puffing and keep a varied ability group close together.

Meh. You might be slim and slow for all I know.

Meanwhile, three months ago...

I can't see my feet currently. I'm assuming I have abundant fuel for long slow fasted runs...

Cyclocross is one of the hardest events I've done - flat our for about an hour. Horrendously hard, especially if you go out too hard.

Anyway, gym life continues for me as I rehab my shin - 1 x big lifts day, 1 x single leg and core day and at the moment a couple of days of random stuff as I feel because I'm not running. Also enjoying a five minute abs workout every morning this week. Interesting way to start the day, and I only have to do it five times, so a nice, but achievable challenge.

hah, well that lasted all of 2 weeks... the hamstring I tore last year flared up again yesterday during an easy lunchtime run which has put me in a crappy mood again. So frustrating as I was really starting to feel like a "runner" again, was really enjoying getting out in the fresh air rather than stuck in the turbo trainer indoors (hate riding in the dark).

If you want to feel inadequate Jasmine Paris has just won the Spine race, having had a baby just last year. Destroyed the men's field including Eoin Keith.

Think it might be a new course record or certainly very close.

Amazing.

She's great, funny her and Jim Mann have been neck and neck on a few races, she had an incredible few years recently and this just tops things. Good for her.
