Finally been getting some regular, decent mileage, and a mix of session in since end of Sept.
troubled only by a week off for a cold in mid Dec, and mid way thru January, all was going steady, no silly sessions or big mileage ramp ups....I’ve only picked up another cough/cold.

I know it’s only a few days that’ll I’ll have to rest, but it does mean 2 weeks effort to get back to where I was prior to getting ill, just so bloody annoying.

Conscious not to go back to it too soon either......can’t be doing with a lung complication.

Think it might be a new course record or certainly very close.

Mad, she was an breakfast TV this morning talking about it.

I saw about 2nd place. Gutting to pull out at 6km. They said he had eating and was resting and was ok so must have just been fatigue or something. Looks like hes probably gone too hard trying to catch Jasmine. Early on they were neck a neck, he bedded down for a couple of hours and she carried on and put a big lead on

I really need to start taking things a little more seriously and structuring some training to progress.

I have posted before I need a sports watch. Out of Suunto or Garmin which is recommended. I dont mind the cost as I will get some use out of it. I would like it to be useable for hiking /hillwalking to.

Seen a lot of good posts from Runstrong coach on Instagram if anyone is familar thinking of signing up to a training program aswell.

Thanks in advance.

I have used Garmin products for Swim / Bike / Run for years. I started with a Garmin and once I was in their eco-system it just made sense to stick with them. I have never had a major problem with any of them. I am sure there are plenty of people who have done the same with Suunto. All the watches do most of the same thing so picking one is mostly down to which one do you like the look of.

DC Rainmaker blogs has a breakdown of all the watches so that's a good place to start for proper reviews.

If you want something for hiking / hillwalking then something with decent mapping might be a good bet (Garmin Fenix 5 etc). Might also be interesting useful to have one with a barometric altimeter (some use GPS for altitude which is less accurate).

Another thing to consider is what you want to do with the data after. Garmin Connect software is ok, I have no idea what the Suunto stuff is like. If you are just going to feed it into Strava then it doesn't matter.

As for running plans there are loads of free ones out there. You can also develop your own quite easily. A long run, a quality speed session (or hill strength or tempo) and then add easy / recovery runs to make up the number of days per week you want to run.

On the running program, the Runners World website has a few basic programs to get you going for free: https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training-plans/

In my little world, my shin is still feeling "not right". It's not aching all the time, but it doesn't feel normal and is a bit tender still, so no running. I'm getting to that awkward bit where I want to test it, but I know it's too soon. Must be strong. Next assessment of readiness will be Sunday, and hopefully Monday will be a short and gentle test run. Fingers crossed.

In the mean time, I just did my first proper single leg session of the year. Ugh. Feeling strong, but it was hard. Oh, and my HR belt is broken so I now just have a clunky watch. Bah.

Garmin for the top end, Suunto for the midrange.
Specifically I'd recommend the 935 or Fenix 5 (the former is the same watch in a smaller shell - same functionality etc.) There are Connect IQ apps for following a trail - at less cost than a 5X or similar that'll do mapping - but no doubt in my mind, the screen is way too small for reading map features. Useful for following a pre-loaded .gpx route or retracing your steps.

I don't know about anyone else but I felt for that guy. To pull out 6km before the finish (having clearly known he was second) says to me that he hasn't given up but has simply buried himself, and wrung every last drop of endurance from himself.

I hope this gets Jasmin some of the wider credit she deserves, she's a phenomenal athlete. I wonder what she's got her sights on next - a crack at winning UTMB perhaps?

Depends what you want it for specifically, it's been good for me to see distance/speed post-run which I imagine the simplest GPS/phone will give you. For navigation it's good to be able to follow gpx tracks, [with or without mapping shouldn't make that much difference] but the best method (for me) for combining map with gps is to use the 'current location' feature on a hot-button which gives your grid ref., I then look where on the map I am. All the precision, much bigger macro view, quick, non-battery draining but demands a modicum of skill and a map of course smile I've got a fenix5 and it [and the 935] does far more than I will ever use, it's a safe 'go-to' for sure,

Quite.

She did a talk that I went to at Glen Coe Skyline a few years ago (just after the BG record iirc) and was great, very 'normal', the interesting thing was (as on her BBC breakfast interview yesterday) that she does a lot of her training in the form of low impact/time on feet in the form of fast pack walking / hiking with weight rather than pushing the running all the time. She was lucky with the weather (which she herself states) but it takes nothing from her performance, which was simply incredible.

Annoyed with myself on Wednesday morning. Wasn’t concentrating and mis-judged a kerb and ended up rolling my ankle. Slightly sprained which isn’t too bad, but was just about to commence training for the half marathons I have planned for Feb and March frown

I believe Eugeni's right shoe had completely disintegrated. He continued to run as long as he possibly could with his toes out in the elements and dropping temperatures. The safety team escorted him off the hill - absolutely heart breaking, he and Jasmin really pushed the pace of this race and made it historic.

Third long run today and it's starting to feel quite manageable. Was able to put down 6 x MP (probably quicker) without too much trouble. Perhaps the training is going better than I thought but it is quite promising indeed.

My 3 week break from running, due to a minor calf tear and then a weeks cycling holiday, was rudely interrupted by the Stowe winter12k today. Just a gentle jog around, but no calf problems were apparent, so need to get back to it now.

So it was a bit chilly today, run at 9:30 so maybe 3~5 degrees this morning?
I normally either run in a long sleeve football top or a quality winter Sausany / Mizuno top, 9~11 inch shorts & footy socks in cold weather ...even in snow & ice,
I consider even though i'm cold in my skin my core is warm and I enjoy running like this,
Yet out today I see runners layered up in T's fleeces and jackets,
I'm sure the answer is .. "what ever you feel confidence in" but
What's better for training runs, Layered up or lightweight ?

Whatever is good for you. It was -2 when I went out this morning (early) and I wore shorts with calf guards, under armour base layer, t shirt, head buff, neck buff and gloves. Felt fine!
