Anyone here got a Garmin 645 Music or Fenix 5 Plus? Any problems?

Looking to replace my 610, and like the idea of music and Garmin pay. I find the 610 a bit bulky to wear as a normal watch though, and the Fenix 5+ I looked at yesterday seemed to be a similar thickness, but not found anywhere with a 645 in stock to look at yet. Half the price of the Fenix, thinner, lighter, and if I'm honest I don't think I'd really use any of the Fenix's additional features... but navigation maps on your watch would be pretty cool...
A colleague of mine has the Garmin Vivoactive Music, which recetly received Spotify support. He loves it, but admits that it is a touch clunky in that you need to download a playlist to the watch, rather than stream it as Spotify is typically known for. You also need Spotify Premium to take advantage of this feature. This is the same irrespective of Vivoactive Music, 645 Music or Fenix 5 Plus.

Garmin Pay is next to useless unless you happen to be with one of the small number of banks that have an agreement with the service.

Shame the Vivoactive doesn't have the Virtual Pacer function, which I use all the time on my current watch (I'm terrible for setting off too fast and dying before the end biggrin), or I'd be tempted by that. Currently if I'm listening to music I use an old MP3 player that I have to load via a USB cable so not that dissimilar. I use Amazon music at home which of course isn't compatible so might give Spotify or Deezer a go if I get a watch that does it. DC Rainmakers review suggest you can set it up to sync playlists when it's connected to wifi, it'd be nice to know how easy that is to set up.

I'm lucky with Garmin pay, both my banks, Santander and ABN-AMRO, are apparently on it.

Fell running yesterday, above Marsden in the Pennines. Most of the field were led astray, I did an extra mile and a half, came in twenty first out of ninety six, and I know at least seven of those in front of me didn’t run through all the checkpoints, but no numbers were being taken as the weather was that poor. Character building.

Friend of mine did the Howarth Hobble in Saturday in similar conditions. You guys get my respect, not pleasant at all.
It’s cold at the start, but I hardly notice once we are under way, the coat lasted about half a mile past this photograph, and the gloves not much further. The hat lives up my sleeve, rather than in my bumbag, as I tend to put it on when running downhill, seems to be the best way for me to regulate my temperature.

If T6 Vanman is about on here, I hope he’s noticed I’ve dropped ten pounds in weight since my last published photograph, the piss taking bd...

Ratrace Deerstalker this weekend biggrin

Not sure if this is important to you, but Garmin are imminently releasing a new line of high-end watches called the Marq: https://gizmodo.com/garmin-hopes-people-will-pay-t...

https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/03/garmin-marq-se...

$1,500 starting price for the athlete edition, going all the way up to $2,500 for the driver edition!

Will be interesting to see if they are successful because the allure of traditional luxury watches is they retain some/most/all of their value after a few years, whereas these will become obsolete e-waste after only a few years, with the metal bracelets being worth more than the electronics inside.

Blimey, I already thought the Fenex 5+ series seemed to be ambitious compared to other manufacturers prices versus functionality. I can't really see the market for that. Like you say it'll be obsolete in a few years, surely most people who buy expensive watches do so in the knowledge they'll hold their value fairly well.

These are the Bentayga of the GPS watch world. The Sandero will still get you from a-b, but if you're utterly devoid of taste and love wasting money, they saw you coming (in your Bentayga).

Just done my first up-tempo run. Shouldn't have really, so I really, really hope there are no repercussions as I'm on hols soon and would like to spend some time running, not being grumpy by the pool.

A close friend of mine actually wants one of these - the Explorer version! His reasons have some logic:

- Wants only one watch that does it all (he's interested in all the metrics, including day-to-day stuff)
- Has a Fenix 3, which is too sporty for the office
- Likes the idea of nice watches, but can't bring himself to spend several £k on a nice watch that won't get frequent use, but can afford to pay more for a nicer finished Fenix 5 Plus

I don't think they'll take off. They'll sell in small quantities to the same type of people that bought into the Fenix Chrono from a few years ago. Even Apple couldn't make a success of their higher-end Apple Watches finished in gold and ceramic because people quickly realised the technological improvements with each year rendered the outgoing model next to useless with almost no resell value.

General running question: Does anyone else have problems with pedestrians on pavements? With most people I pass, we each move to one side and I usually stick a hand up and say thank you, smile and all is well, but about once or twice on most long runs I get two or three people walking side by side who flatly refuse to move, even if you say "excuse me" several times. I either have to take to the road or push past them.

Any tips?

I don't think the Fenix 3 looks ridiculously sporty (unless he has the silver with the red strap). The metal strap version looks pretty good imho.

I wear a Suunto Spartan HR Baro every day, in plain black, and it looks no worse than many of the other smart-watches out there.

When you do a 100 miler who do your sort logistics for after the event out? I am thinking of doing the The Exodus in December. The Brecons are a good 3-4 hour drive from me so I am going to need a hotel for when I finish. It star 7pm on the Friday and ends 7pm on the Sunday. I am guessing I am probably going to need most of the 48 hours so a hotel for the Sunday should be ok. But what if I finished early Sunday morning? What am I going to do for hours till I wait to check in?

Any tips?

Have a slightly crazed look about you put your head down arms wide apart create the illusion you are a force to be reckoned with and yell single file that will sort them. Its just another way of dominating the staircase.

I have opted to run on trails instead. The general population are a source of constant frustration and disappointment in almost every situation.

However, I just step into the road and go round. Life's too short to spend enough time with my friends and family, let alone engaging with selfish morons.

ETA, also, no shin pain following my up-tempo run yesterday. Gym today, but I'm looking forward to some holiday running.

Generally okay around these parts. If you're coming up behind people two or more abreast then they don't often hear your approach so I just duck into the road to go round them, if I'm running towards them they'll generally get out of the way but if it seems a bit awkward for them e.g. they've got a dog, then I'll move to the road. I try to run on the back streets wherever possible anyway so the roads are quiet.

Did experience some quality passive aggressive behaviour a few weeks back though. My run down to the local Parkrun takes in a few narrow alleyways. Heading down one of these there's a bloke with a dog stood at the far end wasn't sure if he was waiting for me or not but as I got closer I notice he's on the phone so guessed he'd just stopped there to have his phone conversation. As he was on the phone and I did want to interrupt I didn't say anything as I passed only to have "thanks for waiting!" or some such shouted at me as I was several yards further away. I sort of waved, called sorry as I carried on but I'm not really sure if he heard. I do wish I could think on my feet a little better sometimes as it would have been nice to turn around, jog back, apologise and say that I didn't want to interrupt his phone call just to make him feel like a dick but by the time I'd thought of it I was long gone and was just thinking to myself that he was as stroppy biggrin

I think some people can't judge speed, so instead they assume a speed depending on what you're doing. When I've been out cycling I've occasionally had people stop and ask me for directions, but all I hear is "excuse me", cause I'm doing 25mph! They've just assumed I'm cycling at 10mph, like they do. With running, I think people assume I'm running much slower than I am.

In all the time I have been running never fallen over.
Today I stacked it. Went down like a sack of st at some pace tripped over a paving slab. Got up laughed it off and hobbled away. Knee is hurting now.

I have posted about sports watches before -I can get a Garmin Fenix 5X Plus Sapphire for £474.00 and am about to order one unless anyone can reccommend something else?
