Does anyone have a watch where you can follow a GPX trace and actually get an ultra distance out of the battery? I did an event yesterday, average finish time is around 8hrs. The course is completely unmarked but the organisers supply a map and a GPX file.
The GPX file is obviously the easier of the two to use, but I spoke to a number of people who were expecting to need to use the map for the final hour or so. My TomTom Runner 3 has an excellent, clear GPX trace function (and they're easy to import) where it essentially shows you the line and how close you are to that line, but mine too gave up about 45 minutes from the end.
Fenix 5 will do maps and I think it has 25 hr battery even with GPS. Bloody expensive though The GPX file is obviously the easier of the two to use, but I spoke to a number of people who were expecting to need to use the map for the final hour or so. Kipchoge! He looks so damn effortless! Farah was clearly having a bit of a bad day from the outset. He's still looking at Marathon at the world champs this year. So maybe he'll get a decent result
But ignoring that lets talk about shoes
95% of that front group were wearing VaporFlys. Mainly the new Next % but still plenty of 4% in there too.
I'm not in the market for any shoe that costs that much.
But Adidas, New Balance, Saucony et al by comparison haven't got a look in. Presumably because they haven't released their own "supershoe"
In fact Adidas seem to be sticking religiously to "their" boost material (BASF developed for them) for every shoe they make. From £160 Ultras down to £70 Iniki (I-5293) lifestyle shoes. Is this an opportunity missed or are these other brands (despite their high net worths) not able to compete technologically with the Oregon giants?

I agree - the timing is very suspect on the Mo Farah thing. He's never been a huge fan of a combative press (who would be I guess), especially after the Salazar stuff, but whether or not he's handled it well will show on Sunday.
My take on the whole thing is they've leaked the "Mo may run track in 2020" as a way of diffusing the pressure over the marathon career he's been targeting. He's obviously got very high expectations and I would guess, hasn't met them which has created pressure too. He wasn't fast right out of the box and looks to be second tier to the very very fast few in a flat out event. He may do well in a championship race though, where some tactics come into play and the overall finish time is closer to 2.10 than 2.02.
A poor result on Sunday that's not down to external factors and I think he'll go back to the track for Tokyo. I also think that would be a terrible idea. A good result and the 2020 marathon will be his target, plus getting those elusive minutes squared away. Let's not ignore the fact that Mo's pb puts him 3/4 of a mile down the road at world record pace. That's a massive gap to deal with.
To all those running on Sunday (anywhere really), have a great race. I wish I could get a bloody place in London, just once. The way the lottery goes, GFA may be my only hope! I shall get my LSR done early, then settle in for the Beebs coverage with a coffee and my aching feet up.

Track to road is the usual progression with advancing age; many like Kipchoge do that very early on. Going back to track again would be highly unusual, and compounding that it would carry a lot of expectation. I see no shame at all in Mo's marathon results; he's been going at a fair old pace, and it just so happens he reached further compared to his peers on the track - one of the two has to dominate after all.
Let's hope the press can keep off Mo's back on Sunday and he has a good race.
He really was second tier.
He is still a British hero and has won many fans with his charm and charisma over the years.
Super Saturday will live long is our collective memory.
Lets hope he can find his track legs and give it another bash on shorter distances.

I was following a good friend of mine at London, who I shared a sub-3 rivalry with for two years or so. We were both egging each other on to try and be the first to get under 3 hours from 2016 to the end of 2017 - he finally did it and got there first last year at the Yorkshire Marathon with a very tense 2:59:54.
With the sub-3 monkey finally off his back, he went and ran an incredible 2:57:56 today at London, and even managed to pull off a negative split in the process!

Mo didnt get a PB. I wonder if the whole Gebrselassie story breaking this week was a deliberate distraction ploy as he knew he wouldnt even be close to Kipchoge.Funny as it was seeing him fall off the giant treadmill at ExPo, what on earth was he doing?!

It was a London PB for him. 5th place, not bad at all.Funny as it was seeing him fall off the giant treadmill at ExPo, what on earth was he doing?!

Not bad but a long way off the win he claimed he thought he was capable of (1/2 to 2/3 of a mile). Also 2 places worse than last year at London. I actually thought Callum Hawkins was going to catch him at one point as he started to suffer and Hawkins was still running strongly.
I was really hoping for that as Hawkins is actually likeable. smn159 said:
Brilliant - well done to him.
By the way - the ballot for 2020 is now open... my entry is in already
I entered this morning whilst the race was still on. Going for my 7th rejection in a row! Might need to start thinking about a good for age time, just an hour and 15 mins to trim off my PB.. By the way - the ballot for 2020 is now open... my entry is in already

If you want it that bad, just take a charity place, plenty of the smaller charities don’t need you to raise bundles of cash. I ran for the Miscarriage Association, and indeed PHers hee very generously donated nearly half the bond which was 750GBP I raised over well over 2k and it wasn’t that much work.

Is it not more that they are all sponsored by Nike (based on the rest of their kit being Nike branded) so they will have the latest and greatest shoes by their sponsor?95% of that front group were wearing VaporFlys. Mainly the new Next % but still plenty of 4% in there too.

Thanks, way waaay too much but it appears that the Fenix 3 does everything I need and can be found pretty reasonably price refurbed.Smitters said:
I would take the Fenix claims with a pinch of salt. Get some opinions certainly, from owners. I have a Fenix 1 bought on the battery claim and it was never close to delivering.
I have a Fenix 3 and the battery is no problems, even after 3yrs of regular use. It's a great watch.Didn't run London (maybe one day) but did tackle my first half on Sunday. Thanks for whoever recommended the Shakespeare / Stratford half in an earlier post, was a great run. Didn't quite manage sub 2 hours but happy with 2 hours 2 minutes as a first attempt. Went surprisingly well, managed to keep the pace I wanted over the first two thirds and still had a bit in the legs to try and pick things up towards the end.
Doing a 10k in two weeks, lets see if all this distance work has improved my pace at all!
