Signed up for some online running / strength and conditioning coaching a couple of months ago after suffering my second ITB injury which put me out of the Berlin Marathon. Have entered Brighton, so going to stick it out at least until then and see what happens

Working from home today so managed to get out for the alternating 10k and 5k pace intervals session... bloody hell!

I am an absolute shoe we and a bit of a Nike fanboy - probably 30ish pairs of road shoes that I alternate between regularly, from minimalist to Zoom Fly and Pegasus Turbo. Never had any issues moving from one to the other, apart from the obvious being not to do long runs in the minimalist shoes.

My biggest issue at the moment is trying not to buy any more pairs this week...

Always wondered about the whole shoe thing.

After I started doing C25K I realised that the pair of old Nikes I had laying around used previously for gym work or other light exercise really weren't suited to running so I set about looking for some proper running shoes. As I was a bit on the heavy side back then, I'm also tall and susceptible to the odd back problem the Internet suggested some cushioned shoes. I liked the look of Hoka One Ones so bought a pair of Cliftons. What a revelation, running almost became pleasurable!

Thing is from then on out I've pretty much stuck with the brand. I went from the Cliftons to Bondis which are their most cushioned shoe and I don't have any issues running in them, no major injuries or any pain other than that you'd usually get from pushing things a bit. I did get a few blisters on the half marathons I've done this year but I kind of put this down to being expected? The only issue I have had was premature wear on my last pair of Bondis but I got a full refund and then bought another pair - after all if they fall apart again early I get another refund or replacement - free running shoes! The other thing is I now know exactly what size I need when I buy new ones, sizing seems to vary a lot between brands, and having big feet most physical running shops never seem to have stock in my size.

I do also have a pair of Salomons for trail work and these are much less cushioned but I'd happily do 10k in them.

If I had loads of money I would like to have a few different pairs of shoes from different brands and try them all on rotation, unfortunately my running budget only really stretches to buying a new pair when the current ones have a decent mileage on them, then I'll overlap them for a while before switching fully to the new ones.

Am I missing out on better shoes or should I just carry on? That's just my ramble on the subject anyway, keep running folks!

I'm big on shoes for a task - I have five fingers for short fast training in the summer to nail my barefoot form, 3 different pairs of Altras (fast, med, recovery), InoV8 mudclaws for OCR, 2 Altra pairs for trail running up to 25k depending on surface and just got some Hoka Speedgoat 4 for distance of marathon + off road.

Not sure if it's because I bounce between shoes so often (as my running is so varied - this week I did 5k Spartan Stadium, bunch of shorter 10-20k stuff this week then a 50K on Sunday) but I seem to go without issues. I wonder if letting your foot get used to the same shoe (more so if it's not minimalist) lets it mask weaknesses?

I know if ran in my max cushion recovery shoes too often my foot would not end up happy (although would enjoy the running on cloud thing till a problem did crop up!)

John. With all of my previous running shoes - ON, NB etc I've always gone up one complete shoe size. Normally an 8 so running shoes, a 9.

Do you apply the same logic to Nike's? as their EU sizing is out of kilter with everyone else? Nike's UK size 9 is an EU44 whereas all the other manufacturers seem to be UK size 9 is EU 43

I'm a 12 in everything, only two pairs of Nike have come up slightly tight in that size (but I can do 10k in them with no issues) - Zoom Streak and Lunaracer.

I'm a huge fan of Nike Free for shorter runs - I love the feeling of them

They're roughly in order of lightest/minimalist to structured/cushioned from top to bottom, left to right.

Finally got to the bottom of my injury. MTSS

Always ran ON Cloudflow in the gym and ON Cloudflyer on the road with no problems UNTIL I started upping my mileage to 50km+ per week which coincided with my marathon prep. Since the marathon, my left leg has been a mess.

Not really thinking about my trainers as I never used to get shin splints and ran quite a lot of distance with the On Cloudflyers. Anyhow, i get through a lot of trainers purely due to the amount of mileage i cover. I purchased a pair of NIKE's (although always been an ON fan) and literally after two runs - the shin splints went. Anyone else suffered shin splints with the ON products?
Well, i really thought this was shin splints but the results of my X-Ray were in and i got called into the Doctors this morning to discuss. Diagnosis - Chronic stress fracture! :-( and have referred me to the Orthopaedic unit. The irony being is that now i'm running in the Nike's - i get no pain?

Absolutely gutted for you. Hope the ortho unit can get you sorted asap.

I don't know what to think to be honest. Obviously happened during Bournemouth Marathon as i remember it was painful as i was preparing for the Great South Run. I didn't know whether i'd be able to complete the GSR due to my leg hurting so much but i did and finished it in 1:17

That was October 20th so, 5 weeks ago and since i've been running in the new Nike's and i've got no pain - so i assume it's safe to continue training. No pain over the last week or two and i even got a PB on Chichester Park Run last saturday

So my running is progressing well combined with weight loss meaning my times are coming down steadily!

I now never see a 5min + km even on longer runs (10k+)!

5km time - 23.03
10km time - 46.53

Really getting back into it now, even in the rain and dark!

Any decent wet weather tops people use? Waterproof/repellent would be great

Congrats on your progression smile It's a lovely feeling seeing the times drop. I'm in a weird diminishing returns stage where I'm doing loads more than a year ago, but not seeing a vast improvement in times. My only answer to this is to do more biggrin, so now I've finished one training block with a race I'm due to start another and gently ramp up the mileage.

Make sure it's actually waterproof (it'll have a rating quoted - for example: Hydrostatic head 30,000JIS 1092), rather than just showerproof. For what it's worth, mine is this one:

https://www.run4it.com/infinity-fortify-running-ja...

I love it, but Ronhill stuff fits me well, which is a big consideration for me, so you probably know brands that fit you well. Mine has a large pocket on the chest which I find useful for my hat and gloves if they need to come on or off during a run. Super lightweight too - I can barely feel it's on me. In a summer shower I'm comfortable wearing a running vest underneath it and I don't overheat. I guess the only unusual thing is that chest pocket is the only pocket on it.

Didn't manage to make it past black friday without buying another pair of shoes... on the upside, too cheap to refuse. Nike have 30% off their sale stuff today, so I got a pair of Pegasus 35 for £51, not too bad really

Looking at that 10k time you should be trimming the 5k time down quite a bit. You've just got to make it really hurt :-)

In terms of waterproof tops I just stick to a long sleeve compression base layer if it's below 5 Celsius, a "tank top" compression up to about 10 Celsius and skin above that but I do run hot. I've not managed to find a jacket that I haven't baked in!

I'd agree with the poster above suggesting that your 5k time should come down a fair bit based on your 10k time. Sounds like you may be doing all of your runs at a similar pace - you might want to consider doing the longer runs more slowly to allow you to do the shorter runs harder. Maybe add some intervals at faster than 5k pace once a week?

Thanks for the heads up! Been looking at running 1km intervals with 30's rest. Think I will structure my week like this

4 x 1km intervals fast aim for 4.20

1 x 10km go on feel

1 x 10km with 2 km's @ 4.30 (3 and 5)

1 x long run of 15km+ this realistically will happen twice a month

Just for back ground I am training for a triathlon so bike and swim sessions are separate.
