Yep I run in gel kayano 22's . I went to the asics store in London and did the treadmill analysis . The bloke bought out 2 pairs , these were more expensive but looked like they would suit they way my heel strikes (outside edge). They do cost a bit but you can normally shop around and pay £85 or £100 instead of the full £139.

I don't get problems with my knees like I used to so they work I guess , I wouldn't mind a cheaper alternative though

First HM done. 02:08:50

Felt fking epic for the first 8 miles, 9-10 were tough and 11 & 12 were hell. Found a second wind just near the end and went for a sprint.

Can't walk now
Well done, did my first 21km last week, 2:06:10, lovely consistent run, really tough towards the end.

Training towards it didn't take long for me, I regularly run 10km, sometimes doing 15km, I started at 15km and added 2km a time until got to 21km.

The wife and I have both entered. Be gutted if I get in and she doesn't. I want to do it but she really wants to London and nothing else. I will happily do MK or Manchester if I don't get in. Be great if we both do but I think the chance of that is slim.
The changed the entry system last year so the odds of getting a place are even longer now. As it doesnt cost anything to enter its always worth a punt.

If you are a member of a local running club then ask them if they get places as you get much better odds. Mine gets 3-4 places every year and there are around 30 or so people who enter the ballot for them (people who enter London and get a 'no' can use that as a ticket to get a place if they remember to enter).
Any idea of the effective odds? From this years numbers I'd assume something like 1 in 6?

From the London Marathon website it says:

"A record total of 247,069 people entered the ballot for the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon. Over 39,000 runners were on the Start Line on Sunday 24 April. We accept more than 50,000 runners as we can predict, after 35 years, almost exactly what proportion of entrants will drop out due to illness, injury or other reasons before Race Day."

Source: https://www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com/en-gb/fa...

So yes about 1 in 6.

But from the total on the start line you need to remove good for age, celebrities, charity, etc.

  • Elite entry (less than 100 places): only those of you with legendary race records need apply
  • Celebrity entry (less than 100 places): if you think you’re famous and have a cause or story that is newsworthy then get in touch with the organisers
  • Championship entry (approx 1000 places): running a sub 2:45 marathon (for men) or sub 3:15 (for women) – or an equally rapid half marathon time
  • Good For Age entry (approx 5000 places): a sub 3:05 marathon (for men aged under 40) or sub 3:45 (for women aged under 40) – times get more lenient as you get older
  • British Athletics Club entry (less than 1000 places): British Athletic affiliated clubs can apply for places based on the number of adult members – but don’t expect many, it’s approximately a place for every 60 or 70 members
  • Charity entry (approx 15000 places): promise to raise money for a huge variety of good causes but don’t be surprised to have to go through a selection process, such is the demand for places

That lot adds up to 22,200. Take that away from the 39,000 on the start line and you have 16,800 available for the public.

If you assume that the 247,069 who entered were public then the odds go up to 1 in 14.

So did the actual run feel harder than the training 21km's?!

I had a quick look at a pair yesterday in the store on Oxford street. But I think most of the staff wanted to leave as no one offered the treadmill analysis.

Maybe i will order a pair to see how comfy they are.

I have kayano 21's which I love but are dying with about 900km on them now, I have 22's ready to switch to but not tried them yet.

I was a bit gutted I couldn't find more 21's in my size

Just did 3 x a mile on the dreadmill. 6 min miles for the first time in years and very happy
Sweet. I did a 4x1mile today, at above wanted-race pace like you said. COuldn't keep it up as I moved on the next miles, ended up sacking off the last mile as I just didn't have the energy left in the legs, but I was happy with the first three. biggrin
Right ankle is starting to feel stiff in the morning, so I am halving my remaining runs and settling for getting around 55mins.

Might want to read about the Manchester marathon before spending your hard-earned on an entry there. As I understand it, you got real value for money this year, being allowed to hang about for a couple of hours after the race while they dug your bag out. I suspect this was to make up for the short-changing the runners got in previous years, when the course was a wee bit short.

Yes I have heard the stories from this year and also about the course problem last year.

Thought it was supposed to be a good race but sounds like it has some serious organizational issues.

If I don't get London will probably just do MK as I wont have to travel

my 21km wasn't an event I just went out and ran 21km, it felt easier that the 20km I did the week before, at 18km I was struggling. During the 21km I didn't really struggle.

Just entered my first event, the great Manchester run, 10km, just training towards that now smile

I ran previously in Asics Kayano's 18-21 which were all great but 22 is a different fit for me. The toe box is narrower and my big toe pressed against the upper. Seems a common issue with the fit if you check.
Had to move to Brooks adrenaline gts 16's which are fine.

Brighton is also a good alternative spring marathon.

I did it this year and am entered into next year as well.

If I get London it will be two in two weeks. One of my club mates did Manchester, Brighton, London this year on 3 consecutive weekends - got quicker with each one.

Leeds half this weekend. Be happy to get round but aiming for a 2.30 now as training has been going as well as can be expected for a fat bloke. Did 13k at weekend and took 6 minutes off time for that, and 6.5k last night (last one before Sunday) - 2 minutes faster

Bring it on biggrin

Chaps when you train in "zone" what are you using? I am hearing more and more that heart rate basically sucks. Given that no one (except that Stryder) has a decent power meter for running yet (and most watches don't have a data field for power in run mode anyway).

Looks like pace is the best bet but I am having trouble with the on line calculators. If I put in a recent 5K time it gives me one value, and if I put my time from a recent HM it gives me a long run pace that is 1 min/mile different from the one given for the 5K time.

I am tempted to use the one from the 5K time as I think the HM is not totally indicative of my fitness (was a tough course and I hadn't covered the full distance previously)

A great day out on the inaugural Glen Lyon Ultra 1350m/50kms (http://runyabam.com/glen-lyon/), I find that you meet more people by sprinting off like a loon and then let them drift past in the second half...a good plan...? Was doing OK (20 miles 3:30) then blew up on the big hill and took nearly as long again to hurple to the end! Fab day though!

Just bought some 15s size 13, and my big toe rubs slightly which is annoying. If I wear my ultra thing compression socks it's OK, but then my foot feels a tad loose elsewhere.

Messed up on my run today.

Not been feeling great after being ill a couple of weeks ago so I brought my rest week forward, the plan was to reduce my long run today from 12 miles to 8.

Then the resevoir carpark where I was going to run from was full (where were these people a few months ago-I reckon there should be places reserved for people who come when it's raining :P) so had to park in the overfill, run back to the visitor centre for the loo and then start my loop, which added 2 miles onto my run. Because of the heat I got dehydrated and really struggled the last couple of miles and my legs were going a bit at the end. So an easy 8 miles turned into 9.5 miles with a real struggle at the end.

Not especially smart from me! Take care and drink lots in the heat folks!
