Just after a little guidance if I may..... new runner here. I hate running... always have done, but for the first time tonight I actually enjoyed it.

I have been for 3 runs so far in the last week, I made the mistake of doing 2 runs on consecutive days and felt really tight the day after the second one.

I worked out a decent 2km route and have just run it in 12m20

I am 6ft and 91kgs.... is that distance and time a sensible starting place to run every other day?

Any advice on running shoes? I've got some nike ones I have had for years and I feel getting something better will help.

Thanks.
Rich
You can do couch to 5K which is a 9 week program which builds you up from nothing and would be better on the body. I didn't do that when I started as I didn't have the patience and probably wouldn't have stuck to it. I made a 5K route which I ran until I had to stop, then walked before trying to run again later. Over a few weeks I built this up until I could do the 5K continuously. This probably isn't the best way to do it due to risk of injury but I was fairly fit from playing football for a few years.

With regards to running shoes, it's best to go to a running shop and get a gait analysis before buying shoes of the right type. My local running shop is offering this service again now.
Yup highly recommend the C25k programme for beginners (qualified Scottish athletics coach) and see how you get on. Mixes up some walking with running then more running and less walking over 9 weeks. Plenty online to chose from, NHS, BBC etc and for sure a great way to get into it.

As for shoes, check what kind of pronation you are (look it up, can do it at home or head into a running store when you can) and get a good pair of trainers that suit your feet, either cushioned or Supported and go from there.

Don't over do it, you will get injured and frustrated but stick with the plan, it's worth it at the end. Remeber to stretch etc afterwards too!!

Good Luck and plenty support on here when you need it from many posters.

Running socks?

What does everyone use?

I've bought some Rockay ones - very good, quite expensive but wore through quite quickly. Ordered some cheap ones from Ebay. Really nicely padded but the material is too slippy and they cause my feet to move about in the shoe

Any recommendations for some that are padded, non visible ankle type but quite grippy?

Been through a few brands, and now only use these. Available in a few ankle lengths.

I use Feetures Elite max cushioning for easy runs, and light cushioning for intervals, tempo and races. When running at speed I prefer the feel of less cushioning and I wear more snugly fitting shoes, so the thinness helps. They're extremely comfortable, but tend to wear through after about 800-1000 miles. I don't get blisters, so they're probably overkill to be honest, but I like them.

I always use decathlon plain old running socks. 3 pairs for £2.49!
Anything fancy invariably causes me blisters / chafing etc

Injinji for me too. However, I find I have to use a nail file after clipping my toenails or I put a hole in them very quickly.

Yep, another vote for these. Have around 4 pairs, most of which I’ve had for over 3 years and well into 4,500 miles, so in excess of 1k miles per pair.
They just don’t seem to wear out and never had issues with blisters.

Did have to leave one at mile 27 on a 30 mile run along the North downs way a couple of years ago when I got caught out with an upset stomach though....the sacrificial sock!

Defo echo the C25k. Perfect way to build your mileage and push you along each week, without over doing it. Once things start to get back to normal you can look at ParkRuns and smaller 10k races.

My latest and greatest daft running plan is to run a 59s 400m. I'm nearly 46.

ASICS NOVABLAST!! - FIRST RUN

A gentle (4.42 pace) run of 12km

First impressions. Soft, very soft. Softer than Nike ZF3's but not as snappy so not bad for an everyday training shoe on slower runs.

The upper feels really good quality and very breathable. You certainly feel the airflow around the toe box.

If you've wide feet - there's a ton of room around the toes - probably too much for me (although i've fairly wide feet). ZF3's feel much more snug and tighter fitting. You really need to lock the Novablasts down really tight to stop your foot moving around in the shoe although as your distance goes up and your feet swell - they become more snug.

They are going to feel quite unstable for some as the stack height is quite high and the foam very soft and you do really notice this on uneven pavements.

Overall, they're ok. I won't rave about them as some reviews because i think the ZF3 is a better shoe for me personally but i need to get some different shoes into a rotation. I'm eagerly awaiting my new Pegasus 37's due mid July

Are they worth £120? They're well made, perfect if you've wide feet and want a really cushioned landing through the mid and forefoot. For me, the price point is too close to the ZF3's and i'd rather be wearing those at just £20 a pair more (if you can get the damned things as Nike never seem to have any stock these days!!!
