My wife completed the couch to 5k this morning! Her last 3 runs were all 5k+ as she seeme to run a 28minute 5k consistently.

Super proud and its great running together, she's really enjoyed it and plans on running 3 times a week now!
That's a hell of a pace for someone only just finishing C25K, it took me several weeks after completing it get below 30 mins let alone 28.

That's exactly what I was thinking. She's done very well.

Yeah I am really impressed, she has good form and actually runs as opposed to shuffling. She isn't overweight or anything and takes her warm up and cool down seriously. Well pleased for her and its nice to go out together for a run!

That's pretty nifty, you'd have come 12th if it wasn't for the luxurious dinning! Well done, not a bad day out!
If I hadn't dined I would have run out of gas!

Just to make you feel a bit better, I think everyone has an "out of the box" speed that is then improved with training, along with endurance. From experience this speed varies enormously between people. For many people new to running it'll be sub 30min, or even sub 25min 5k.

Time to buy a new running jacket.

Need something which is ideally fluoro yellow, lightweight - ideally with hood

Any recommendations?

Runner's World have a review of running jackets this month. I have a Ronhill waterproof one and a Gore one that isn't. Both are good budget options and have lasted me well. The standout jacket in the RW test was a Gore one that was over £200.

Be wary that sizing has changed for many brands recently - I used to be a Ronhill medium and have ended up with the waterproof jacket, some shorts and a long sleeved top that are all a size too big - everything stepped back recently, so where I used to be a medium I'm now just below a small. Asics have gone even further - their small shorts are so baggy I can't run in them at all. Again, I made the mistake of trusting the brand sizing and cutting the tags off before thinking too much!

No help to you whatsoever, but I'm using the 2019 London Marathon ballot failure one and it's pretty good smile

Depends what you are after - does it need to be waterproof or just windproof? Insulated or not? I find I run pretty warm, so will set out with a jacket, gloves and hat and finish the run with a jacket, gloves and hat stuffed into the back of my shorts.

https://rab.equipment/uk/borealis-jacket

I have one of those - it isn't a running jacket and it isn't really that waterproof, it is however super breathable, fits really well and packs down to nothing. If the weather is ever more serious than needing to keep the wind and the worst of the rain off, I probably am not going running... Its probably a terrible recommendation for a running jacket, but it works perfectly for me and on top of a down jacket or jumper, it is normal enough looking to wear when not running.

I've literally just got one of these after watching a video review of various jackets on one of the youtube running channels I follow:

https://theomm.com/product/halo-jacket/

Pros:

It is very lightweight
Nice fitting hood
Good waterproofing level (From specs / review - not yet tested myself)
Good breathability (From specs / review - not yet tested myself)

Cons:
No pockets
Doesn't fold into itself
Seems expensive for what it is (£112 on Amazon)

As said above...depends what you want from it? Fully waterproof? Windproof? Just a throw on jacket?

There's many out there, think i may have 3, 1 showerproof/windproof and 2 waterproof, 1 lightweight for races and another for more long days in the hills.

I normally just try to run in a long sleeve top or mid layer though to save taking a jacket.

Decathlon have some cheaper options, e.g. Kiprun light showerproof top for 34.99.

Breathable waterproof fabrics are largely a lie, so I'd always go for physical ventilation i.e. pit zips or vents.

Thanks chaps

Just looking for a relatively budget, shower proof one for when I go running in the evening.

I've ordered a couple (Higher State with a hood and Mountain Warehouse) both circa £50 and will return the one's I don't like.

Just a bit of feedback on C25K for injury recovery. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the cardio aspect develops more quickly than muscle strength. Essentially, I've improved my running fitness too quickly for my leg strength, so I'm back to square one as my calves are too weak still to prevent shin splints from re-occurring.

Moral of the story: Strength work as well as cardio.

Two weeks off running and then re-assess with the physio. I'm in exactly the same position I was in in late March, only without the fitness to run 20 miles. Piss.

Yes, also sorry to hear this, and it's something that I have a constant battle with. Ever since I had to miss the Berlin marathon last year with ITB issues (again), I've been doing core strength and single leg balance sessions twice a week to try and strengthen my core, hips and glutes in particular. I've also made real efforts to change my run form to a mid-foot strike, which gave me calf issues for a while but overall It all seems to be paying off as I'm back up to around 65k per week without further issue. I won't know for sure until I go through another marathon training cycle though.

I know the frustration of injury only too well - hope you manage to sort yours

Started with a new trainer yesterday. Got a loooong race in 32 weeks, with some ‘challenging’ targets. Going to be interesting to go back to pretty much zero and let someone else dictate my regimen.

I had a race on Nov 14th, which was annoying as it's now obviously been cancelled. I'm about to rebook for December, so fingers crossed that can take place. I've asked to be notified about Brighton Marathon as well. I've not even done a Half yet (the ones I've entered keep getting cancelled...), but I figured I'm not getting any younger and I already run nearly 90km a week, so should adjust to marathon training ok.

I experimented with a caffeine gel on Friday, with the thought of using one before my next race, and it didn't go too well. The evidence is that it can boost your performance, and this is an effect pretty much all studies have consistently shown. I'm unusual in that I've never really had caffeine before; I don't drink tea or coffee, and I barely eat chocolate. In theory then the effect should be stunning. I had severe stomach cramps all afternoon and it took me 3 hours to get to sleep! Not something I'll be trying again. hehe

Have always bought Salomon trainers as their 12 fits me very well, but tempted by a pair of Hoka this time (sense ride 3 v challenger ATR5) . Anyone advise me how Hoka fit in comparison, I know they are said to be wide around the toes/mid foot which I need. Both similar price at about £90, will be used combination of light trail/woodland running and road running.
