C25K wk6, run 2. Shin splints. Fml. Quick review shows regular runs, but irregular rehab and physio exercises. Error.

A week off, more physio to catch up and then a more balanced approach.

It's not like I don't know this, but I somehow forget, repeatedly...

Physio yesterday for my calf strain. Although my mileage has been consistent I have been upping the intensity recently, so probable an overuse error - although within the required ranges on Garmin and Strava.

Calf was significantly better today with no pain at all walking around. Did the first daily set of rehab exercises and I can feel it now though, so some work to do. Probably go out on the bike later - did 30k on Monday and it was fine. Planning a longer ride at the weekend with a local group as well to try and maintain some fitness.

Got a new pair of Hoka Arahi 5s (having got on well with the Arahi 4s). Only downside is pain on the front of my right ankle, as if the laces are too tight. But there's some heel slippage, so if anything I'd prefer to be lacing them even tighter (and using the "lace lock" method). This is probably just a whinge - but if anyone happens to have any experience/brilliant ideas, let me know! Reluctant to just return them, as the stability and cushioning are both good.
I've got a pair of Arahi 4's that i ended up re-lacing and missing out the lowest 2 eyelets (nearest the toes) - that seemed to feel better on the front half of the feet, whilst keeping them nice and snug ankle/heel area.
They're due to be replaced soon (nearly 600k on them) and was looking at the 5's but maybe stepping up 1/2 size for a better fit - i'm a UK size 12 and note from the Hokka site that equates to their 12.5 size

So it looks like my foot pain is a minor stress fracture to my 4th metatarsal.

Marvellous.

Finally managed to get into a proper shop to grab my first actual running trainers.

Ended up with some On Cloudflyers.

Feel like nothing else I've ever worn. Barefoot on the treadmill they noted I was neutral, and my heel was 'barely' brushing the surface.

With the trainers, running 'the same' - it felt like the whole sole was contacting at the same time, and super secure. Hoping that's a good sign!

HIIT tomorrow (I'll be wearing my usual Merrell barefoots) - then C25K starts Monday. Actually looking forward to it. Seems lockdown has changed me...

Required is the wrong word - they’re suggested zones for weekly load in Strava and in garmin there is overall load plus intensity split. This is on nearly every training app, including training peaks. As you say, don’t be a slave to it and listen to how you feel more.

Great time! That's proper quick! I cant even imagine how fast the sub 30 min guy was going!

I did a steady 10km this morning in 45mins, then an easy 5km with the dog.

More rehab, a good rest and I did 25mins in the sun yesterday. It was lovely, but devastating how hard it was and how far my running endurance has fallen. A long rope to climb up so I'm rethinking my 2020 goals to a more realistic view.

Well, last few days I had no foot pain so decided to try a really short run after a medium bike ride. Only 55mins on the bike and then a 2 mile run and..... No foot pain.

Time to get back to it..... Again! I will build the miles back up over 2-3 weeks this time to give my body more time to adapt. I don't think it was a stress fracture, some things didn't quite fit with that.

Folks looking for some advice on trainers - and perhaps warm up options

I mostly do 5k runs these days and over the years have been plagued by Achilles tendon injuries.

Recently been do a few more runs - in my Asics Gel Kayano 22s - and I'm starting to get a sore heel - the upper back of the heel so possibly some insertional Achilles tendonitis?

I have been finding for a while that the Asics feel a bit too solid on the heel.

I don't do massive miles - maybe three or four 5k runs / week - and at 51 I'm not braking any records. Best is 21.08 but I'm mostly keeping it sensible and running 23 pace. I am keen to see if I can get below 21 at some point but keeping injury free is more important than going for PBs right now.

Are there any running shoes you lot would recommend for better cushioning than my Asics?

I'm quite intrigued by the Hoka One One Clifton 7 running shoes as they seem to offer a lot of cushioning but I have no idea if they are actually any good, or if they are what I really need to keep this heel pain at bay.

All thoughts and suggestions much appreciated.

I cant get on with Hoka I must have tried 3 or 4 pairs in my opinion they are quite a change from asics traditional models!

Do you need the stability of the kayano?

Are you buying online or in store?

The adidas solar boost has a very soft heel area almost flexible but still offers support. The grip is fantastic and I have worn them for 400miles with no issues, I still use them for chilled runs with the dog off road! They replaced a pair of asics cumuls 20 and had no issues at all!

Obviously the Asics nova blast are worth a try big cushioning and decent speed available once you've got used to them!

When trying for my first pair of running shoes at the weekend, the chap offered up the On that have the 'double stack' clouds due to the cushioning they provide (one of my worries starting running is aggravating a decade old broken kneecap injury).

When I tried them on the treadmill, they were way too much for me - but might be worth a look?

Good point about the need for stability.

Years ago - when battling this chronic Achilles injury - one physio reckoned I over pronated a bit, but actually the wear pattern on my shoes is pretty central these days so I probably don't need the stability. Would neutral shoes typically be more cushioned?

Good info on the Hokas. They do look a little out there that's for sure.

I usually buy online because I tend to buy very similar shoes - Asics on the whole - but I could go to a store if I really needed to.

I'm also wondering if I need more cushioning on the front of the shoe so that landing and push off are less stress inducing for my Achilles.

No to the cushioning question, there is probably a larger range of neutral cushioned shoes but there are loads of stability cushioned shoes also!

Asics nova blast plenty of cushioning and you know your size.

I am the same size in adidas, nike and reebok runners as asics if that helps!

If you want a light cushioned pair of shoes these are worth a try and you can always get them cheaper than rrp - https://www.reebok.co.uk/floatride-energy-3-shoes/...
