The Running Thread Vol 2
Discussion
Have got back into my stride (literally and metaphorically) in the last few weeks.
I'm managing a 5k at lunchtime, Tuesday to Friday, and then doing a long run on Sundays so have a rest on Saturday and Monday, and I'm seeing everything improving nicely even in just a few weeks.
I've got the Hampshire Hoppit trail marathon on the 20th June and have just signed up to the Exmoor Coast 55 Ultra in October so have something else to work towards

10.3 miles largely off road today. Very windy!!I am thinking my injuries were due to me to cycling and running too much. Since cutting the cycling back considerably I feel fine. Last 7 days have accrued almost 37 miles and after the run today the legs feel absolutely fine, not even tired.
Still going to be cautious, it's only 37 this week because of changes to work shifts, I won't run tomorrow so it's only going to be 28.5 for the week. I plan to average 35/week within 4-5 weeks, recovery week, then 40/week another 6ish weeks after that. I'd love to be averaging 50-55/week by the end of autumn/winter. Fingers crossed all goes to plan.

On the subject of shoes. I started running just short of 2 years ago. I got setup with some very cheap shoes from decathlon which were very comfortable. Last year a saw a pair of ASICs Gel-Glyde that were on offer so invested. As a novelty I flagged on Runkeeper that I had new shoes. I have now done just short of 500km in them and the app is saying time to invest in new shoes. I am running 3 times a week daily 5km @27min sessions and occasionally 10km 56min.
What is the considered opinion on shoe replacement. My view is that they are very comfortable and not really showing signs of wear and tear so I am inclined to keep going with these for a lot longer. Not really interested in spending money if not essential.
Yeah spot on with your assessment, if they are still functional and you are not picking up niggles crack on!What is the considered opinion on shoe replacement. They are currently on offer for £70 https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/men-s-running-shoe-g...
You can however get a great pair of trainers for £70 pretty much year round so I would just pick up a new/different pair when your ready!
Put myself in the hurt locker today!
Well, touch wood my injury-free running continues for 3 weeks now.
Tough (for me) session today. Good warm up, 4x1 mile reps off 90secs rest, average was just under 5:55/mile. 4mins off then 4x30sec hill sprints with jog back recovery.
Really suffered the last 400m of that final mile rep but wanted to see where I'm at. Conditions were good but a bit windy, mild headwind on the 2nd and 4th reps (5:58 and 5:55) and mild tailwind on the 1st and 3rd (5:54 and 5:52). Based upon my power the hill reps were equivalent to around 4:45/mile pace.
After jog back total 9.2 miles.
Getting there, slowly but surely (I hope )

Nike.com have 30% off most shoes, with the code SUMMER21. Lots of stuff selling out tho.
Yep, spotted that email. 3 days after I take delivery of some Invincibles from sportsshoes.com!Yes, I've ordered a new pair from Nike for £48 less and will be sending those back to sportsshoes.com
Not checked in here for a while! How is everyone getting on?
I have been plodding along just doing 3 x hour long runs a week (steady pace, easy pace and comfortable on that day pace), 1 hill session and a long run.
Enjoying it just dodging the weather and making sure I am ready to add some speed in. I will drop the comfortable run and make that a speed session of around 45mins to 1hr.

Doing very well here thanks. 37 miles clocked this week. Easy start to the week with a plod of a 3.6 mile run, Tuesday was 20mins tempo (6:10/mile) followed by 4x200m /by that time I was on 40+ miles for 7 days) so took Wednesday off, easy 6.1 miles Thursday, Friday off, yesterday was a 1km hard effort (3:05.....wet tarmac and 2x90degree bends didn't help me!), 5mins off then 30mins at 6:20/mile, and today was 10.6 miles around the trails u if Forest of Dean with 750ft of elevation gain and ALL off road bar about 200m makes 20 miles in the last 2 days. Definitely getting there after all of those injuries. Be interesting to see what I can do pace-wise by the end of the year. Hope to be doing 50+ miles/week by then.
Sounds like you're doing well?

Yeah getting on well, averaging over 30miles a week so pleased with that 35 last week! Did a lovely 14 miles yesterday on a new route for me, quiet country lanes. Hard 7 miles planned tomorrow after a 1:30 bike ride, that's my key session of the week and I really look forward to it!
Sad to hear of the passing of British marathon legend Ron Hill over the weekend

Putting the old Ron Hills on tomorrow. RIP.
A staple of my 90's running and biking wardrobe, I would rock a black leg, white piping and heel loop if I didn't think pouring 40 year old legs into 13 year old's Ron Hills wouldn't cause circulation issues... a sad day indeed.Since Xmas, I've been a bit off a slob for various reasons. But since the beginning of April, I've made a real effort to get into a routine and it's working.
Tuesday-Friday I run 5k at lunchtime, and Sunday I do a long run of at least 14k, which I'll be upping to half marathon distance this weekend.
I've effectively come from almost nothing in terms of fitness again, and the improvements are staggering as I've never done it in such a structured and controlled way in the past, it's always been a bit here and a bit there.
I've got a trail marathon at the end of June which I last did in 2019, and according to the data (fwiw) I'm already fitter than I was when I did that, so fingers crossed I should be good this time round.

Do we have a strava group for this thread? Think it would be cool as there is a massive mix of abilities and everyone is supportive!

Legs didn't feel great today but didn't do too badly.
Warm up, 5x1km off 75secs rest (averaged 3:36) then 4mins off and 4x200m off 40secs (averaged 37-38secs/ 5min/mile pace).
With warm up and cool down total 8.4 miles. Quads still got a bit of DOMS, been increasing the miles a lot recently so no surprised I'm just beginning to feel it a bit, just need to get this week done and I'm having 5-6 easy days to recover before going for a 5km TT to see where I'm at. Probably 18:30-18:45 looks about right.
