The Running Thread Vol 2
Discussion
My coach has given me the go ahead to start some speed work other than just threshold work. I am still very apprehensive and just doing 1 slightly faster session/week and 1 threshold session/week. This week was just dipping into it so after 20mins threshold I did 2x1k and averaged 5:40/mile (1min between reps) and didn't push max. Yesterday just 30mins continuous at 6:12/mile and a few 30secs efforts. I'm going to do some more stuff next week, then an easy week, and then I will start doing max effort sessions 1x/week and pray I don't get another injury!

sorry can the pick the collective brain for a min. i came off a footpath while running on Monday momentarily and jerked the knee a little. it was sore after but i have full movement etc and its getting better it seems, ie stairs feel fine etc.
however, considering this was Monday, how long should i give it until i run again? what would the rule of thumb be? I was going to go for a run today but it still doesnt feel completely 100%
I personally wouldn't go for a run until it feels fine, and then I'd make the first run back quite a short run, just to see how it felt later that day and the following morning.however, considering this was Monday, how long should i give it until i run again? what would the rule of thumb be? I was going to go for a run today but it still doesnt feel completely 100%

Like the look of the new Garmin 955's after a whizz through the DC Rainmaker review. Solar sounds like a marginal benefit unless you're doing ultras in the sun all day though, so maybe the non-solar one
Sounds like it will definitely make me faster so I feel an upgrade coming on
Must admit I'm sorely tempted, although my 935 does almost everything I need and in reality, the battery is fine. The big upgrades for me include power (I use a Stryd, being able to have native power workouts would be a big plus point for me. The other is built in maps. I very regularly use the navigation for doing courses, including off road routes, following a breadcrumb is "fine" but having actual maps, including trails, would also be very useful. Agree with the solar, doesn't seem to add much battery, and for most people the battery life is more than enough anyway.Sounds like it will definitely make me faster so I feel an upgrade coming on
Is it worth £480 to me right now? No. My 935 is around 2 years old, I reckon I'll leave it another year or so to be honest*
- with the best intentions this may not be the case

Might read the DC Rainmaker review. Although that'll make me want it more, I'm sure!

One thing I have noticed, my Garmin Edge 1030 calculates EPOC for each individual workout, but the Forerunner 935 only calculates my weekly EPOC, does the 945 show you the EPOC for each workout? I wonder if the 955 does if the 945 doesn't....
Might read the DC Rainmaker review. Although that'll make me want it more, I'm sure!
945 recalculates VO2Max / training load / training status (productive / unproductive etc) and training focus after every workout.Might read the DC Rainmaker review. Although that'll make me want it more, I'm sure!
955 seems to do similar but adds in some additional metrics, including HRV and sleep and presents it in a more meaningful way to give a better view of your readiness to train. It also works out a proper training plan if you enter a target race with daily suggested workouts. Loads of other stuff too, including running power (although that still needs an external pod to make it work)
Seems a significant upgrade overall and I do like the tech - plus training 6 days a week does mean that I get the most out of it (justifying it to myself now!).

Had a look at the 255 but it doesn't seem to offer anything important over my 245 Music. NFC would be nice, as I do like a post-run latte, but the list of banks on Garmin Pay is tiny.
I got a Curve account set up and it works seamlessly with my bank, which doesn't support Garmin Pay - NFC payments just using the watch come straight from my main bank account.egor110 said:
Cornwall mullion to kynance and back.
Not that hilly just over 1000ft over 9 miles .
Did a bit of running (and quite a bit of walking) there a couple of years ago - we went in feb half term and stayed in Mullion. The weather was superb but the ground was still pretty saturated. Just a shame it’s so far away from home…Not that hilly just over 1000ft over 9 miles .

Anyone normal would say wait for it to feel completely better. Runners would probably say go and do little 2km tomorrow and see how it is in the evening. Then you can run properly on Sunday if all holds up. however, considering this was Monday, how long should i give it until i run again? what would the rule of thumb be? Ran my first half marathon race on Friday.

I was gutted at first as I was hoping between 2h10m-15m yet also relieved to get the monkey off my back and popped my cherry.
I started half marathon training since the first lockdown after looking for a new challenge after 10k as well as time to fill.
Had covid during Christmas and New Years which wrecked me and had to start all over again. 5k was a struggle for at about a month and didn't really enjoy my running until Easter time comfortably running 10k.
Still buzzing from it, like after great a night out clubbing or after great holiday. Can't wait to do my next one and get a collection of medals going.

Hi
I use map my run (iPhone) and a cheap smart watch for measuring the usual stuff.
Does anyone know if it’s possible to set an alarm/ tone after reaching a certain distance? E.g, after I reach 5k, the phone will tell me and then I can turn around, so it’s actually a 10k run, if that makes sense?
Happy to look at alternatives to MapMyRun as well, since the update it’s been very frustrating to use.
