I'm a pencil man when on the course. By all means use Golf Shot after the round (I do exactly that) but I think it takes too long and provides too much distraction to use a phone on the course.
I understand, but for me it feels completely natural, possibly as I've always done it.
I was in the same boat (as I said, used it for 3 years). It's a great app, but I don't think you realise how it slows you down and distracts you until you do without it!

For social rounds I've been using Gamebook which is great as a scorecard system, was more interested in the missed fairways etc that golfshot seems to offer. Best advantage to Gamebook is for our yearly golf trip, can set up a competition with a few side games etc and it keeps track for you. Much easier than working out points in the bar afterwards and saves arguments!

If I'm on my own, I'll usually just use a pencil. Playing on Saturday, hoping the weather won't be too bad!

Looking for some advice from those who travel abroad to play golf as I've never done it before

We have the use of a Villa which sits on this golf course http://www.vistabellagolf.com/en/golf-course/

Is there a good site to use for getting green fees at a decent rate? Is it quite simple to take golf clubs with you (I see Ryanair sting you £35 each way for the privilege) or is it better to hire over there? Any recommendations of courses to play in the Alicante area?

You're generally better off flying BA. You'll pay £50-60 more but your club cost will be included and the service is a lot better. So for effectively the same money you get a better service and a more reliable one too. I think teeofftimes.co.uk should be useful from memory. I think Golfbreaks.com runs that site or they are affiliated in some way. Looks like a great place to play, enjoy!

Well, due to needing an Ark not a buggy recently, i've not managed to get out yet. It has been, however, one of my better golfing years so far.

Today i got confirmation i'll be playing The Belfry in August over the course of a long weekend. Brabazon twice and PGA once.

Even better is that it is an invite through work so it's all free - including accomodation, food and drink!

Plus i've got the excuse that as i don't want to look like a plum on the course, i need to get out more before then to practise - which went down reasonably well...

All i need now is justification / permission to upgrade the irons. And the hybrid. And the fairway woods.

Didn't play a single round last year and only managed to get to the range less than 5 times, so lost touch with any enthusiasm I had. Had some business in Dubai this week and my colleague set up a round and I'm back in love with the game. I was super nervous having not hit for a year, but I actually did OK. Was obvious after the first 2 holes that the driver was not my friend, so I reverted to either the 6 or 4 iron off the tee and took an extra shot getting to the green, but it was superb.

Still a lot of work to do, I'm finding it a challenge to read the green, I crouch, I look, I analyse, but the bloody ball just veers off because of something I've not taken into account, but anyway, that will come I'm sure.

Still struggling to find anyone to play with. Stupid question, but is it the done thing to just book around for yourself? For some reason I have it in my mind that to play a round, there has to be at least one other player in the party, however, in Dubai, my buddy told me that he plays daily and just plays 9 or 18 on his own, and another buddy of mine in the US does the same thing, so if it's actually normal to play a round solo, I will get out a hell of a lot more.

Objective for 2016 is to definitely play more and actually get a handicap.

Long time lurker but not posted in the golf forum up to now. Hopefully a good golf year coming up, got down to 10 last year but a spell of bad form towards the end of the year took its toll. Missing my buffer zone in a Xmas comp pushed me up to 11.5 so started the new year off 12.... d'oh!!! Then got given a shot in the annual feckin handicap review!!!

But as any good golfer knows, spending your way to better golf is the answer!! So added a new 3 wood, a couple of wedges and a rangefinder to the bag in the last fortnight which sets me up for the year.

Played today, first time the course has been open at the weekend this year, got 32 pts which was ok for a half waterlogged half frozen course! Was good to get out, and a lovely crisp morning.

So setting a target for the year, single figures by the end of the summer or the whole lot's going on eBay!!!

Good work, 36pts is never a bad score at this time of year. Didn't get a game today, a dusting of snow overnight closed the course...... not what you wanna hear after setting the alarm for 7am!!

Played this morning and the snow never really turned up. Putting was a real challenge.

Wondered why the old thread had gone so quiet.....

Haven't managed to play this year yet but I've spent a fair few hours up the range though ! Itching to put my new putter and hybrid to good use but my local courses have been shut due to the rain.

Well..... our competition draw was at 7.15am but we didn't tee off until 8.45 because we had to wait for the course to open!

Had a dusting of snow on the greens that had to melt. Course was in good shape, though!

Hi all. Bit of a thread lurker last year after an all out terrible time trying to learn the game.

I'm 25 and just starting to play so I know I've come to it late. Last year I gave up mid summer as my swing went to pot and I was topping every shot. I let the clubs lie in the garage for a few months and didn't look near them but now I'm willing to try again.

I knew that a big problem with my game is that I don't have a swing. Yeah I can swing a club but it isn't consistent and I don't get consistent results. I decided that I would probably book a few lessons to get help with establishing a proper swing and take it from there but in researching I found Leadbetter's A swing. I understand that many people could be critical but when I'm coming from nowhere it seems as good a place to start as any. I've bought the book and now I need to practice. Hopefully I'll be dropping my handicap into the 20's this year and more importantly enjoying getting out again.

Going and getting lessons with a local pro are your best bet here. Trying to sort yourself out can sometimes lead to really bad habits, even using books, youtube etc. for guidance. At the moment you are more of a 'clean slate' to work with for a pro. Going and developing a swing of your own will be much harder for a pro to break down and start you over with.
Probably best to start off with a bunch of lessons so they can gradually work on your swing and show you what is going on. Then you'll start to find things get a bit more comfortable and its just a case of practicing that a lot and your handicap will drop quickly to start with.

Another vote for having a few lessons. See if you can get a deal for say a block of 6 - try and take one fundamental thing from the first lesson, say something like getting your grip right. Then practice until its second nature before you book the next lesson. That way, it's a steady process learning one thing at a time which is manageable, rather than getting brain overload trying to take it on board all at once!

That should get you on the right track, then you can go back for more as and when it suits for a refresh, or say look at another aspect like a short game lesson. And in between, play as many times as you can!!!

Played today, 12 degrees n sunny in mid Jan is always welcome, even if the course was still fairly soggy. 36pts which was all good given I had a slow start, managed to claw back a few points so happy enough. Kinda paled into insignificance though when the current Mrs G fired in a hole in one on the 9th!! Not too much of a horrendous bar bill though, and what's worse it's her 3rd one, and I haven't had any! Must be something to do withstand red tees being so far forward!!!

Par 3 9th, about 115 ish yards from the reds I think, about 80 of which are over water. She hit a 9 wood (what's that about!!!?) straight at it, pitched about 6ft in front, rolled up to the flag n disappeared. Followed by leaping about n cheering on the tee, high fiving, and a fairly substantial bar bill!

Congrats to Mrs G.

I would just like to get out and play a round soon. It's been so wet and miserable here that it's been impossible to get out.

Played again today, was the first Sunday this year that the course has been open. Got 37pts which was a result, seeing as I had 3 pts after 3 holes! Happy overall with the new additions to the bag, especially the rangefinder, but the new 3 wood is a bit hit n miss so far. New rescues should arrive this week then that's me sorted for the year, and there's a month to get it all dialled in ready for the first qualifier at the end of Feb. Can't wait for the spring to arrive and the clocks changing!!!
