Hmm, went out for a quick 9 holes last night with a friend, shot a 1 over 36.
Same 9 holes in the Competition on Sunday resulted in me shooting 43.
Hate this game sometimes :/
White tees for the competition versus yellow for the friendly round? I find that even an extra 10 yards per tee makes a difference and tests what shape your game is in e.g. that 7 iron approach shot suddenly becomes a 6 iron approach. My best competition rounds have always been when my chipping and putting has been at it's best because I'm hitting less greens and need to make lots of up and downs.Same 9 holes in the Competition on Sunday resulted in me shooting 43.

After various bits of advice here I've had some lessons and left the driver in the bag over the last few weeks. The lessons with the tracking data are really good, really helps me to work on things and there's less worry when off the tee.
Played a few twilight holes last week so I could get some actual time on a course, after a slow start I got a bit of rhythm, even managed some pars including coming just short on a birdie putt on a par 5 so pretty happy with that.
I think some more time on a course is due, so many more variables to take in to account, much like the switch from driving the ring on a playstation and in reality.

First game of the year for me yesterday (the travails of young children keeping me from my fun) and I ache like billy-o today.
A scrappy 82, with no 3-putts, and not a single putt missed from inside about 7 feet. This is unheard of for me. A 15 footer for an eagle was raced 5 feet past, and the knee-knocker for birdy thankfully sunk.
My normal short putting performance would have lead to the 87-88 that the rest of my game deserved. I drove well, but the mid and short irons, normally the best part of my game, were woefully out of calibration.

We seem to have the opposite problems! Short game and short irons pretty good. Driving and tee shots letting me down. I shot 88 which included 4 triple bogeys. Went for my first ever driver fitting today. Hit my driver ok in warm up.
Then into fitting booth, made a couple of good swings but then gradually lost the plot. Gave the poor bloke very little to go on. Seems I might benefit from a lower spinning driver head.
Was surprised to find that a different shaft added 3mph to the clubhead speed. Didn't realise that - thought it only helped trajectory and dispersion.
And this shaft was a good 2" shorter than my driver's.
Went onto the normal range afterwards - started hitting it well again.

If you picture the shaft bending in your downswing and straightening again by the time you meet the ball, finding a shaft that does those movements in sync with your natural uncoiling movements will benefit every part of your game. Consistency, clubhead speed, feel, launch angle, spin rates, trajectory, you name it. Then into fitting booth, made a couple of good swings but then gradually lost the plot. I don't understand the wheres and whys of kick-points and such, but I'd like to.

It's the weight of the shaft that makes the difference to swing speed. You can swing a lighter shaft faster, but some people will lose control. Ideally I suppose you want the lightest shaft you can get away with. I like my driver to feel a bit heavier than a lot of people. Same with the rest of my clubs. My irons have got 130g shaft fitted, which is pretty heavy. Then into fitting booth, made a couple of good swings but then gradually lost the plot. Gave the poor bloke very little to go on. The effect of stuff like shaft flex and kick points is debated both ways. Mark Crossfield (Youtube instructor and vlogger) pays pretty much no attention to shafts, other than the flex. He'll happily use whatever stiff shaft his driver comes with.
Good fitters can marry up a driver head and shaft that gives you the right combination of launch and spin for your swing. It also has to feel right. There's no point in paying £350 for a new driver that supposedly "fits" you if you hate the way it feels. Also, don't be afraid of getting a shorter driver than standard. A 46" shaft is pretty standard these days. The average driver length on tour is 44.25". There's something to be said for finding the middle of the club face more often, and a shorter shaft will help you do that.
Are you sure you didn't turn the fitting into a long drive competition, causing you to hit it worse? A lot of people try to smash the ball during lessons/fittings and then can't find the middle of the club face.

Just been into American Golf to order another wedge (gone for the 50 degree Engage Square to replace my PW) and we got onto the discussion of club lofts (as you do), and he mentioned something I frankly couldn't believe. He was quite shocked that the 50 was to replace my PW, as apparently, on a modern set, the PW is closer to 43 degrees, opposed to the 49 of my current one.
43 degrees??? On a bloody Pitching Wedge?
No wonder the pros are hitting 5 irons around 220 yards, it's because their 5 iron is what I would term a 3 iron......
