Just had a call from my dojo apparently UKBJJA have decided BJJ sparring isnt allowed at the moment, so after 1 class we are back to no training.

Ah yes, the self-appointed guardians of UK BJJ, thankfully none of the clubs I visit are members but I've seen a couple of threads on UK BJJ Underground around this topic.

How was it?
Pretty good, couple of new faces but nothing too major. At my other club they had a big session with 15 or so newbies. Also had the return of some older faces now feeling like they want to return...I took a small amount of pleasure watching them re-adjust biggrin

See mine aren't either but mine have been really protective over training during COVID.

Are we all back at it then? Me and my lad have had to find a new club due to the head coach/owner of our old one passing away and the club having to move/change timetable. New gym seems pretty decent and a nice mix of gi, no gi and wrestling in decent surroundings with good lads.

Did 2 classes last week (my club does 2 a week) but I'm away this week so missed them. But the head coach (black belt) and his missus (purple) have tested positive for Covid so were closed again.

In the absence of local PAYG no-gi/wrestling, I've been going to a local boxing club. So far so good.

I'm back at it a couple of times a week, though that's MMA & No-Gi, not sure if/when I'll go back to training in the Gi. Since my last update here I received my Brown Belt in BJJ which was nice, though unless i find the time and motivation to do more in the Gi I won't ever get my black

Great achievement. I wonder how low the % is of people who get as far as you have done?

It's low, possibly in the single percentages. There was some information regarding this floating about but I can't seem to find it now.

Since moving country (UK to Switzerland) I've really found it difficult to find the motivation to get back at it, between work, moving into a new apartment, weekends away etc. so far its been easier to just not go.

That said, I went to one session after a particularly long day of travelling and work....and proceeded to throw up at the end, not my finest moment. Haven't been back since.

I also found out that I was in-line for my purple belt at my old club, they had 6 monthly promotions in July, if I was there I'd have been awarded it, although I'm sort of happy I wasn't as I really don't feel ready, especially with the COVID enforced break we've had to contend with.

Anyway, recently I've felt that niggly feeling of wanting to go back and commit properly again so no doubt I'll be back it before long.

Whilst it's not an issue for me (nor likely to be any time soon), what's the thoughts on the 'policy' of some clubs on the whipping of students who are awarded with a new belt?

Character building part of the journey, unnaceptable bullying or somewhere inbetween?

Dont think I've seen that done in the UK unless they student has asked for it. Mate of mine did an intensive course in Thailand White to Blue (mate is a pro MMA so he was ready to go up anyway and quickly went up to Purple). They whipped him, he strangely enjoyed it.

As a public school boy I'm down with all that biggrin.

Whipping people with belts is not something that has even crossed the minds of the instructors at our place. It's 2021.

That's not to say that some of the students who have received a new belt don't set one up with their buddies as they see it as a right of passage/something to emulate.

Interesting comments by Pete about his potential Purple. Is the 'weight of the belt' as much of a thing as it is in other MA? I assume that it must be? I've know a decent number of non BJJ black belts who really struggle with it.

Part of it goes to a point I made many pages ago about once you get to the higher levels, collecting belts become less relevant to you personally. So when you do receive one, you never feel like you quite deserve it.

I got a GB Blue belt when training there in the Gi, this was simply a result of attending the required number of classes. I won't wear it, I stick to my 4 strip white at me new club as I feel embarrased to wear and not worthy of the rank. If I could take a stripe off the white belt without it being obvious I would do.

Like with a lot of things BJJ related though it's probably a non-issue for everybody apart from me and nobody else gives a toss.

Whipping - Happens more than you think in the UK, I don't think it's a thing in the bigger schools e.g. Barra but definitely in the smaller ones (I had it when I got my blue belt), doesn't hurt too much and its a weird team building thing.

Anyway, it happened, I went back last night, albeit to a different club which isn't too far away from where I live and is actually affiliated under the same organisation as my old club in the UK. One 1.5hr basics gi session and one 1.5hr no-gi session.

Gi session went pretty well, it was taken by a purple belt and we had a roll at the end, neither one of us submitting each other and no real dominant positions but still a fun roll and nice to be getting back into the swing of things.

No-gi session, different story. My no-gi is definitely miles behind my gi and it needs alot of work to get it up to scratch. I was mauled pretty badly by the higher belts and my legs molested for 30 minutes straight but despite this I really enjoyed being back on the mats.

So anyway, theres nothing like throwing yourself in at the deep end, I'm back tonight for another gi session and then probably a no-gi session on Wednesday depending how my body feels.

Hello body pain and aches, my old friends, oh how I've missed you.

Trained again last night, 1.5hr gi session intermediate/advanced. Nothing too fancy, some guard passing and a little bit of back takes from giftwrap / modified side control finished up with positional sparring (5 or 6 rounds, it was a blur after a while).

Fitness is letting me down at the moment but I can work on that.

No-gi tonight, pray for me.

And that's my training done for the week, flying back to the UK tonight as its my weekend with the kids and I'm handing my rented property over.

Ready for some recovery if I'm totally honest, quite sore this morning as well as sporting a nice black eye from a stray arm last night.

Glad to hear a few back on the mats. I did a gi class last week for the first time in a few years and it was hard, completely forgot about gi chokes and protecting my neck. Also found it a lot more claustrophobic than nogi and quite uncomfortable!
