95mph with a 6 iron. Late release too (but good tempo)
Threw this shaft out as first option on the DNA gadget.
First outing with them today. 33 points playing off winter 3hcp. Lost points due to putting not irons. Very happy with them.
Yeah that's fast, you must absolutely tonk the ball. Threw this shaft out as first option on the DNA gadget.

I love the finish on the jpx tour, hope you have a great season with them 😊
What a strange game.
I played Sunday morning, my first round for 3 months.
It was 0 deg but dry and the sun came out halfway around.
I wholly expected and prepared for a disastorous game but it did not materialise.
Big stick was long and straight, with a few exceptions the irons were behaving. Putting was difficult due to frost on greens at the start of the round, turning to wet when it melted then dry when the sun got to work. Difficult to judge speed.
I guess the big thing was the fact that I tried to empty my head and just keep things simple.
Despite a lot of rain in last week the course was in great condition. 31 pts off 15 happy.

A new £200 starter set of Wilsons or Dunlops is worth about £45 by the time you get them home. Not to mention that they're crap. You can't make golf clubs and sell them for a profit at that sort of price without designing in crapness from the start.
They are so crap that a mate of mine still plays his original box set of Wilson clubs he bought just over two years ago when he took up golf. He has only managed to get his handicap down to 10. I keep telling him if he buys 'better' clubs he will be playing off scratch within weeks but he's having none of it. He keeps spouting the same old nonsense that it's not the clubs but the player......Edited by SpeckledJim on Wednesday 10th January 11:56

James I'm disappointed in your comments, usually you are bang on. Here is a fact, they're all made in china, including PXG! Dunlop/Slazenger make some very good clubs now, and are owned by the same company that owns Srixon.
Crossfield went round nine holes with a Wilson starter set, and it made no difference to his scores.
I love golf equipment, but let's not kid ourselves. I have a friend who plays of scratch, he trolls people by using old blades and persimmon woods, bought off of ebay. He is mustard, he still shoots level or thereabouts, no matter what he is playing.
If you're a great big fella, or very small, fitting is a must. Otherwise, just treat yourself when you're ready, and accept that it is a treat and not an absolute necessity, to be carrying 1k+ of golf gear.

There's not a great difference in the actual shots the clubs will deliver, for a normal amateur? As long as they fit, and the shafts suit, then no, there isn't. I'll accept that point.
Is there a difference between how it feels to middle a used forged Mizuno and how the same shot feels with a Shiny&New Mike Ashley Special? Yup. A massive difference, and it's an important one. That magic feeling of the first great shot you ever play is vital, IMO, in contributing to whether someone 'gets' golf. The more it happens, and the better it feels, the better.
So it's a great-feeling (and non-rookie-flagging) set of clubs for no basically money risked, or a guaranteed big percentage loss on an inferior product?
To the lad playing off 10 with his first clubs, that's great, he's done well, but better clubs are nicer to use, and as-and-when he tries a set, he'll want some. And they don't have to be any more expensive than his first set were.

My comment was driven mainly by helping the chap not lose 75% of his money if he decides in a month that he hates golf. Which happens a lot. A used set of Pings or Mizunos will hold their value, where a new starter set simply won't.

I honestly can't argue with any of your points
I play blades, despite being a relative hacker, i love them and won't go back to cavities.
What I do like about SD and Wilson stuff, is that it's very accessible. I could walk into a SD, and buy everything I need for not a lot, and SDs are everywhere. I have had genuine success playing there 3 piece urethane ball, and I think some of the stuff they sell - recent Slazenger wedges etc- are nice clubs.

eBay, club noticeboards, Gumtree.
£200 will get everything anyone needs to get started with high quality used kit.
When they quickly come to their senses and quit this stupid good-walk-spoiled, then they can get that money back and spend it on a bike or a guitar or a lathe or fishing kit or whatever else seems like a good way to get away from the bloody kids.

So what would we recommend for this 'first blades under £200' used set?
I wouldn't recommend blades. Something like these Ping G10
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ping-G10-Irons-4-PW-BLK...
Or these Mizuno JPX
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mizuno-JPX-EZ-Forged-Ir...
Or something like.
If you only pay eBay price for them, there's no real risk.
ETA, In about 1996 I paid £200 for a used set of Ping Zing 2. Looking at eBay now, they're still worth c.£150 today, hundreds of rounds and 22 years later! And I honestly don't believe today's stuff is actually much 'better' in terms of playing golf shots.
And the ISI copper berylliums that replaced the ZING 2s in about 2001 (for about £200) seem to have appreciated a lot since then!
The three sets of used Mizuno irons I've still got all cost between £180-250 (new something like £700?) and all seem to be worth within 20% of what I paid.

Thanks for that, I've just bought the Pings. Something like these Ping G10

I really hope they're good now...
(You can't go far wrong with Ping or Mizuno irons, IMO. Very high quality kit.)
ETA: been for another look and you've made a terrible mistake.
Not really, they're exactly the sort of thing I'd suggest. (which is good, because I did). Once they arrive it'll be worth asking the pro how they fit you, because you can get them adjusted for you which is a small amount of money well spent.

Sarcasm? Moi? No, I was after a serious recommendation. Did a quick hunt round on G10s elsewhere and the ones you found seemed to be in better condition than most, plus the set included the 4 iron which many of the others don't. I'm happy with the price too. Will post what happens when I take them out. Laid up at the minute with recurring hand/wrist problem but am hoping that these clubs will stop me trying to overhit.
PS I had a set of Eye 2s before which I liked despite not realising they were stiff shafts (I'm in my early 60s).
Also I remember trying out a set of Pings at AG a couple of years ago and thinking they were very nice but beyond my reach at over £600, so £124 including postage for these G10s seems like a gamble well worth taking. Thank you for the link.

I'm five eleven or thereabouts so I'm hoping the black dots will be OK for me.

Weather looks OK! Should be good.
Had a good 27 hole competition at Rye last week, foursomes. We won both our morning and afternoon matches. Fantastic lunch in-between games!
If you need a stand in, i live round the corner & am free all day . Enjoy, it's a decent course - some spectacularly difficult holes depending on what tees you're playing off!Weather looks OK! Should be good.

I see you've already bought some Pings, but if you ever decide to do things properly (;)) I'd look at either the original Nike Forged Blades or Mizuno MP-33's, two classic models available for less than £200. Those Pings should be perfect for what you are after however - I find Ping to be very marmite, some people worship them, others don't - but if you have hit Pings before and got on with them I'd say it's the right move. I'm around the same height as you (just over 6 foot) and my old Black Dot Eye 2's fitted me fine.
