Went to a demo day at the weekend at our local range, quite keen to try out some of these new musclebacks that have been launched (MP-18, 718MB etc), and utterly fell in love with a set of irons, which would fall into the category of "None of the above" smile

First asked about the 718 MB's, was told they only had the AP2's (ugh) and CB's, so not the best start. Then asked about the MP-18's, and was given a Blade and a SC to try. The SC was nice enough if you like that sort of thing, but must admit I was quite disappointed with the Blade - topline was far too thick for a blade, and wasn't a real fan of the feel. I know this is heresy as far as Mizuno are concerned, but I wasn't getting a great dela of feedback on the contact, they felt a bit mushy and remote. It may have been the shafts (they were fitted with PX 6.0's and I'm a Dynamic Gold kind of guy), although they swapped to an S300 for me, and I still wasn't too impressed.

So to hide my disappointment I asked if they still did Srixon irons, hoping they had a Z965 to try, they said no, but they had just taken on the contract to supply kit from a company called Vega. I hadn't really heard of them, just knew they were one of the Japanese boutique brands like Miura. He handed me a 6 iron in their VM-01 model. I hit two balls and instantly fell in love. That same High Definition feel I'm used to with the Nikes, lovely penetrating trajectory and a useful distance bump on my Nikes. I was expecting him to turn round and say they were about £200 a club, but they were doing them for the same price as the Mizzys. Still £1100 for 3 - PW so will have to wait a while, but based on the 10 or so balls I hit - worth every penny.

I know there a couple of blade junkies on here, so if you get a chance, I would highly recommend giving them a go.
Couple of questions if you don't mind. I am currently playing with Nike Vapour Pro Combo irons and I like them for feel, wondered which Nike irons you are considering moving on from? I am also interested in your Vega experience, I fancied a set a couple of years ago (when I traded into the Nikes) but couldn't get a demo anywhere so be keen to hear what you opt for and how you get on.
Sure, I've currently got a set of the Original Blades they brought out in 2003-ish, feel very similar to your current Vapors, just a little less help in the long irons. I am still torn between replacing them or perhaps taking them to a local club fitter to be refreshed (refurbished heads, new shafts etc) or splashing out on something new, but as I have a May Wedding to pay for, and the resultant honeymoon, I doubt I'll be doing anything major for a while smile

I notice you're in the Midlands? If you can get up to Staffordshire Stone Driving Range have just taken on Vega and are fairly knowledgable - worth speaking to if Vega still appeal.

Apart from Vega the others I am potentially looking at are the Titleist 718 MB's or Srixon z965s, both blade sets, but have matching cavity sets if you want to put together a combo set like you currently have - check out the 718 CB's or Z765's in the longer irons if you don't want to go full blade.

I'm also hearing good things about the TaylorMade P730's and Callaway Apex MB's - both have combo options iirc.

I'm not really in the market for irons just yet and I have never played with blades (I'm off 9), but my interest was sparked by your Vega trial and I will definitely check them out when I'm due to change, interested to note you think they added distance as I'd assumed they were more about feel.

I think the added distance is more a reflection on my Nikes than the Vegas - mine have "traditional" lofts, so the PW is 49 degrees rather than the more typical 45 to 47. The shafts are also half an inch shorter than normal , so they typically play a club shorter than most.

Distance wise they were pretty much the same as the MP 18s, but straighter and with more feel.
