Played Conwy again on Sat, the wind was in a completely different direction than when I played it a few weeks ago and what a difference it made! It played much harder and the course was clearly designed for the wind to be in that direction! Played bobbins but enjoyed it smile

Must have been bloody hard playing upside down biggrin

Old Head, just outside Cork

Trying to put a golf break together with a few friends in the next month or 2, the course looks stunning but is it any good?
Yep, well worth a visit, stayed there a couple of years ago. A great course but its tricky, as you can see from the pictures a good few of the holes are right on the cliff tops. On a couple there's the green, 3ft of fringe and then warning signs saying don't go any nearer the edge!! My advice - take more balls than you think you'll need and get the earliest tee times possible, it just gets more and more windy as the day goes on!! And if you get the chance, have a shot back at the 17th green from the 18th tee!

I was off 12 at the time and to be honest the wind killed me on the second day, I got about 20 points. Its an experience though and I'd definitely go back.

I found this (which I won on a golf day many many years ago...) in a bag containing a spare "bits and pieces" set that I lend to guests.

Apparently it is "non-conforming". Excellent! I will take it out on the Royal Course at Vale do Lobo where I'm playing on Wednesday afternoon.

Is it likely to be any good? Or has modern tech now moved the driving game on so far that it'll be rubbish?

Had a great match on Sunday afternoon, won 3&1.

Just 3 poor tee shots from being a very good round for me... and a couple of missed birdie putts!

Good looking card that Rosscow. Decent putting by the look of it! I had a friendly game with a mate yesterday, we both played really well considering he hadn't played since November and me since Feb. 34 points (gross +15) for me and 32 points for him. Both came off feeling we left at least 6 shots out there each through silly mistakes. I had a run of being -1 through 6 holes in the middle of the round so i know good golf isn't that far away! Must try to play/practice more often! Also, shame about Woods - really hope he can get back on the wagon..

Yep, my putting is pretty strong.

Need to improve on the odd bad tee shot, and my approach play. Getting there though, and really enjoying it!

Also chipped like Seve - from 60 yards in I was on fire! laugh

Good morning, this is my first post in this section so please be gentle!

Have been playing golf now for about a year but only once a week or so going round a decent 9 hole course in mid 40s (par is 38). I have some not particularly good wilson irons and some even worse donnay woods plus a great big bertha driver or unknown age.

I have the option of getting some Callaway x2 hot irons (full set) and some Taylormade woods (unsure which subbrand) plus a taylormade bag for £150.

First question are the irons suitable for a beginner? I have looked at reviews and they seem to state the clubs are good but some differing views on whether they are a forgiving club or not.

Second question do this seem good value? I assume the only way this can be worked out is to discard the drivers and count them as an extra as i do not know what type they are and apparently the clubs are in very good condition.

eBay seems to suggest £200 and over for the irons so seems like a good deal but just wanted to check as can only see buy it now not live auctions at this value.

Any help appreciated and have a good day.

What i would do is go and hit some irons at a golf shop with a range and try the different brands.

Pay particular attention to the shaft, lie and the amount of Offset the irons have. If they have a full set of demo clubs you can even have a hit with a 6 irons and be fitted for it. I.e if you are tall you can lengthen the shafts and adjust the lie. for example i am 6ft 2 so i have 1 inch in my titliest and 2 degree upright. Some manufactures sell longer clubs off the shelf so you think that you hit them further ( taylormade, Callaway).

Once you get a fit and like a club, walk away from Amercian golf and say i'll think about it and hunt down the clubs to your spec on Ebay ensuring that you get the correct shaft. The lie and length can easily be adjusted by blowing off the grips by a decent pro.

what is going on with Tiger...very strange.

Prescription medication in the US is a big problem. I fear that some high paid doctor has prescribed him a very strong Opiod narcotic for his back pain, he was spaced out on it and fell asleep.

I hope he doesn't get hooked on the stuff, like Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, Prince etc!

Thanks for that, I'm about the same height as the guy I'd be buying them off so as long as he bought properly in the first case of course they should be okay. Will go to a range and test his with mine to see if i can tell an improvement i think along with a reccomended set from local golf shop.

Hello, and welcome smile!

That price sound pretty decent to me, they are good irons, and should last you.

However, I would ask how tall are you? If you are outside of 5"9 <---> 6"1 I would recommend fitting, or buying 2nd hand Ping irons, with the correct colour dot (their fitting process). You can easily find out what colour dot you are, via their website.

Another however! I find that It is nice to buy new things, if you are not super poor, you should maybe set yourself a goal (break 100 or whatever), and then buy yourself a nice new fitted set. Doesn't have to be expensive smile

there are good deals to be had!

i sold my 712 Ap2's for £150!

I have been offered a new set fully fitted of 716's for £350....that is a bargain and why i don't mind letting my old sets go for £150

Height wise im 5ft 10 this wouldn't be a forever set of clubs just a set i can carry on progression with as feel im getting close to where im better than my clubs (they really are old pieces of metal!).

As long as they suit me on a range and are a good deal I wouldn't lose too much on in a year or so I'd be happy.

Maybe borrow them for a round? I wouldn't worry too much on getting fit just yet. As long as you're enjoying yourself that's all that matters. Maybe get a few lessons under your belt and re-asses next spring? Welcome to the game & enjoy it! I've got my fourth round of the year on Saturday, can't wait! Here's hoping for 36 points!

It took two extra holes, but I eventually made it through to the next round of the club knockout! It gets tough when you have to give lots of shots.......

Just back from a fairly epic holiday in Mexico and the US, main focus of it was getting married in Las Vegas (yes, in a drive thru, and no Elvis wasn't there smile) and the accompanying honeymoon, but I managed to get a couple of rounds in as well smile

First venue was El Cameleon in Mayakoba just outside Playa Del Carmen - a PGA Tour venue for the OHL Classic. Must admit I've never seen a course in such fantastic condition - even the fairways were like snooker tables. The layout itself wasn't actually too challenging, some water around (complete with Alligators) but as long as you were accurate off the tee it wasn't too bad at all. Biggest problem was the wind - it was cut through jungle on the way down to the beach, so on the fairway it felt calm, but as soon as the ball went above the jungle the wind took it, so judging distances was...interesting. The greens were much slower than I expected which meant I spent the round leaving putts halfway, but through all that muddled round in 38 degree heat for a 91, which I was happy enough with (no one else broke 100).

http://mayakobagolf.com/

Then moved on to the US, having a couple of days in LA, a few days in Vegas then off to Santa Barbara, where I went for 9 holes round the Glenn Annie, the course we usually play when over there for business. Ended up shooting 40, and as I went out first thing got round in 1 hr and 10 minutes (with a buggy). Thought about playing in Vegas but it was just too hot for a pasty Scotsman such as myself smile

Then got home on Thursday, had to play the next round of my knockout on the Friday (lost on the 19th after being 4 down after 4 - jet lag and getting used to my own clubs again were the excuse), then our medal yesterday, where I shot an 82, to end up 1 over my buffer zone frown
