Went down the driving range today. Getting much more confident with the long irons now, which I dreaded hitting a month ago.
Driver still goes where it feels like. I took some video and i think I am striking the ball with the club a bit too vertically (i.e my hands are a bit too high on ball contact) compared to my setup position, if that makes sense.
If that is what you're doing then it's a common issue. Driver still goes where it feels like. I took some video and i think I am striking the ball with the club a bit too vertically (i.e my hands are a bit too high on ball contact) compared to my setup position, if that makes sense.
Watch Mark Crossfield's daily vlogs on YouTube. He gives people tips on how to address it quite often. You can watch all the old videos and you'd be surprised how many there are with similar problems
Speaking of MC, anyone seen the BS in the Mail and the Mirror this week? He's being dragged through the mud by the CEO of Lynx golf over a poll he posted on twitter which she took completely the wrong way.
Played the Marquess at Woburn on Friday. What a treat that was, wonderful course! In top condition - Open final qualifying just 3 days before and the place looked stunning. Shot 33 points with 3 blobs, made a 2 and played pretty well.
Played at Dale Hill yesterday for a friends birthday. 14 of us, I won the money with 37 points. Blobbed one hole and 4 putted a par 3 but still managed a gross 83. Don't think my first sub 80 round is too far away....

Had our Club Championship at the weekend - beautiful weekend for it, and the course was looking absolutely superb, and playing tough due to the conditions - only way to stop it on the green was to bring it in from great height. Club Champ has never been a happy hunting ground for me, I'm normally out of contention by the 9th on the first round, but this year I came up with a strategy to make sure I kept the ball in play off the tee, so the driver spent a lot of time in the bag, replaced by 3 wood / 1 iron.
Executed to perfection on the first day, shooting 76 for a nett 67, after leaving 4 or 5 shots out there with birdie putts that shaved the hole, leaving me leading the nett competition after the first day. Second day my swing wasn't quite there, but was getting round (despite a triple on the Par 4 7th) until the 13th tee. Took my 1 iron out and pulled it into the trees, not normally too much of an issue (just chip out and carry on), but got a horrible ricochet off a tree which left me with no percentage shot back out. Tried a long chip and run through a gap with my 1 iron, just hit it a foot too high and it clobbered a branch and ended up in the trees again. Took me 2 more to get out, and after that the head had gone, and went Quadruple, Bogey, Triple, pretty much ending things there. Signed for a nett 76, ended up 7th in the Nett competition and 3rd in the Gross.
Massive progress on last year, still thinking about what could have been however. Still, got cut to 8.3, and have a lesson tonight to see if we can finally eradicate my hook.

Got a club fitting on Friday. Had my Titleist 910 D3 driver since 2011 so will be interested to see if the new technology makes much difference. A good drive for me is around 270 to 280 yards so will be impressed if there is something out there which can get that closer to 300
I think you will find those extra yards. Especially with the Epic, really seems a game changer. The new Ping G400 looks nice.

Will admit I've heard mixed reviews on the Epic, some absolutely love it, others not so much. Definitely worth trying that, the M1/M2 ,917 and G400 (if available) I'd say. Given that I gained about 20 yards just by changing the shaft in my Covert I'd say a proper fitting should stand a very good chance of getting the distance gains you're looking for. The new Ping G400 looks nice.
On the subject of new clubs, there are two upcoming lines that have really caught my eye.
http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1466072-mizuno... <--- Mizuno MP-18's, presumably the replacement for the MP-4's. Much want.
http://www.golf-monthly.co.uk/gear/gear-news/title... <--- Titleist 718's, especially the MB. Loved the 716 MB's I tried, and these look very similar to the Nikes I'm currently using.

I bought the standard Epic last week. It's very, very good for me so far. On the subject of new clubs, there are two upcoming lines that have really caught my eye.

My old G25 (that Rosscow sold me) was just as long on my best strike, but the Epic seems to out perform it by a mile when you don't catch it out of the middle. I'm much closer to my max number of around 275 (with roll out) a lot more of the time from what I've seen so far. It seems very forgiving. With the G25 I'd be dropping back to 220-230 far too often.
It's also very straight for me. My miss seems smaller.
I tried the sub zero, and nearly bought it, but the spin just drops off too much on poor strikes and the ball drops out of the air. It carried 10 yards further than the standard on a really good one though.
It makes a lovely sound too. No loud crack off the face, just a reassuring solid thud. Absolutely love it.

On a separate but sort of related question if I may, what's the best golf GPS app at the minute? Have installed a couple and then uninstalled them as they are either full of ads or don't seem to do much.
No idea about the best, but I always found GolfShot to be excellent. It's £20 a year though. Not sure if you were after a free one?HaplessBoyLard said:

103/104 mph.
A couple faster on average than the sub zero for some reason.
I came away with an Epic Driver (Adila Rogue Max 65g Stiff), XR 3 wood and a Vokey wedge. An expensive trip indeed but really enjoyed it. They also adjusted the loft and lie angles on my irons as part of the dealA couple faster on average than the sub zero for some reason.
I wasn't swinging great but when I got it right the Epic just flew. Ball speed was a good 10mph faster than my 910 D3 and around 20 yards longer carry. As the range use 80% balls and it was straight in to a fairly strong wind, they were sailing up a little and stopping dead so couldn't get a clear idea on what the extra run out will be but the spin numbers were around 1000rpm lower so expecting a fair few yards when I get out on the course. Good shots were clearing the fence which is 220 yards so not bad with 80% balls in to the wind.
My swing speed fell massively with the sub zero, from about 110mph to 103, which was a bit strange, couldn't really get on with it. Wasn't a fan of any of the ping drivers as they're just too big, the M1 was a slice machine for me and the JPX900 numbers no a patch on the Epic
Looking forward to getting it out on the course and seeing how it helps my game
The numbers on the epic 3 wood were also very impressive but couldn't justify an extra £100 over the XR which was unbelievably easy to hit
Had a 79 today (Par 72). Was 3 over coming off the 16th but finished with two doubles which was a bit frustrating
Didn't quite get to grips with the Epic. One really good hit which sailed past 300 yards but I was a bit wayward on the 4 or 5 other hits. The XR 3 wood was a different story though, straight and long every time. Used it down the first and I had 80 yards left to the green on a 370 yard hole. Don't really need a driver when a 3 wood flies that far

Think I'll be in the market for a new driver soon as well - was at the range over the weekend, merrily hitting balls when I heard a horrible rattle from the end of my driver - the adjustable hosel had come loose. The pro shop at the range tightened it up and it seems OK, but I don't feel 100% confident it isn't going to come loose again, so am going to look around. Due to weddings I'm not going to have a huge budget - probably up to £250, so will be looking at last year's models I think, and am keen to try the M1 430, Vapor Fly Pro and the 915 D3 as I prefer a smaller head. Biggest challenge is going to be finding one of each to try out, the M1 and 915 have been replaced, and Nike have pulled out altogether. All 3 seem freely available on t'internet though.
Also want to try a heavier shaft if possible, hoping it will smooth out my swing on the course.
