I’ve just done a silly thing.

A very silly thing.

I demo’d The MP18 blades. They are the nicest irons I’ve ever looked at or hit.

It’s better to ask forgiveness than permission, right?

Yes.

No.

I don’t know!

This is hard. I want them...so much.

I've never hit a bladed iron before. Are they really that much harder to hit?

Current set is Taylor Made RSI 2 Irons. Would I notice a big difference in forgiveness between those and the MP-18 irons for example?

No harder than a small cavity, but oh so much nicer. I will never use anything else now.

Everyone should try them at some point in their lives.

I found them really easy to hit, though I asked the shop to put a lighter shaft in the demo Club than my current AP1 irons with S300 shafts that I’ve always found slightly too heavy.

A bad strike would still come up way short, but that’s true of any iron. What I really found is that all the good strikes were tightly grouped for distance. They were very consistent. My AP1s can get massive flyers out of nowhere sometimes.

I also found it quite easy to shape the ball both ways without really ever hooking or slicing it. Again, the AP1s are prone to over turning the ball left and right due to the lower lofts.

Whatever my next clubs are, they’ll be blades. They felt amazing. I’ve just got to work out how to justify the cost now.

RSi are a strong loft distance iron. Low spinning as a result. Get a bit of grass behind the ball and they can fly miles which is the problem I have with my irons. Far too inconsistent distances. Blades will give much less variation on good strikes.

Crossfield has been a great advocate of blades, pretty much for what you've said here.

Bought Wilson Staff FG62's 4 years ago, love them smile

Played this morning, well tried too

A combination of no proper warm up and a heavy session at the gym a few days back was enough for the muscle running between my shoulder and chest, round the back of my right armpit to give up...

Tried playing the rest of the loop but had to give up and call it a day - thankfully not a comp!

Just taken one of the trophies at the golf club down to a jewellers to be engraved as we won it last year (Sussex Artisan Championship).

The trophy is massive. Apparently it's second in size only to the English Rugby League trophy.... I've just had a look and it appears substantially bigger than the FA Cup.

He's just valued it at over £30,000 yikes

Solid sterling silver, made in 1928. Donated to the SAGU by former MP for Eastbourne John Slater. Very interesting!

I would say Yes.

I've played most of my life with bladed clubs (from when my dad bought me a set) and got down to 8 hcap in my youth.

In recent years it's been relentlessly drifting up and got to 14. I could get around the course but not hit many "great" shots that felt just right (you all know the feeling). And even when I did they invariably went 20 yards further so not much use.

I'm also a firm believer in it's what holding the club that is the most important thing rather than the club itself. Anyway a pal had a spare set of Ping G20s (interweb says they're hackers clubs) he wanted rid of and actually swapped them into my bag when I was putting my shoes on! I gave them a go and what a revelation. I went from about 5% "great" shots to 75%, felt absolutely brilliant. Even my bad shots (divot showed I was well off centre) would go 90% distance and at most 10% off line. It's almost impossible to hit a real stinker. I bought them there and then.

They also go a lot further: PW around 145yds, 3-iron around 230yds (in summer).

Made me feel like I'd been playing with the equivalent of a wooden tennis racket for the last 20 years. Proof of the pudding is my hcap came back down to 12 (first cut in many, many years). Now if only I had a short game and didn't have the putting yips!

I'm sure everyone's different though and it's what suits you at the end of the day.

I've only ever hit 2 sets of blades in my life. First was a set of Hogan Apex II my friend had at uni, that I would occasionally borrow at the range - they went that well it inspired me to get my own. Then in 2004 I tried a set of the Nike Blades Duval used to win the Open, and Tiger was putting in his bag. I bought them after 10 balls and they are still in my bag now.

I was coming from a smaller cavity back than yourself (TaylorMade 300 Forged if anyone remembers them), and I found very little difference in forgiveness at all - if anything, I actually found the longer irons easier to hit.

You'll probably notice 3 things coming from a set of RSI 2's.

1 - The feel. This will be night and day compared to what you are used to - High Definition Golf I've heard it referred to.
2 - The distance - RSI 2's have fairly "jacked" lofts, meaning your 8 iron will probably be at least a club longer than that of the blades, but you will be able to control that distance so much better - the RSI 2's are prone to the occasional contact coming off hot, and clearing the green by 30 yards.
3 - The long irons - they will probably be less forgiving than the RSI's, but again, the feel will be in a different league.

However, after 12 years using blades, there is no way I would go back to a cavity - unless I had some weeds to dig in the garden smile

HD Golf, like that!

The only thing I'm annoyed at is that I didn't try them earlier smile

Nearly a hole in one.

I think I would have been less annoyed if I had scored 8 on the hole.

Wish our holes were as well cut as that.
In other better news, despite the crowned holes, 41 points on Saturday. Bad news, it was in the Stableford medal smile In truth quite pleased to see my handicap drop, albeit only from 18.3 to 17.6 so no actual change this time round. Was channelling Justin Rose's super-slow swing all the way round, thank you Justin!

Does anyone have the Tom Tom Golfer GPS watch?

AG have just reduced it to £99 for Black friday which seems a pretty good deal.

Thanks
