"There's no conversion for a penalty try anymore". When did that law change??
When they introduced the other changes. Makes sense to me seeing as it's always in front of the sticks."There's no conversion for a penalty try anymore". When did that law change??
How long will it be before we see a high profile game with the attacking team down by 6 camped on the opposition's line with the clock in the red?
With this law change, surely the defending team can just deliberately infringe at will, safe in the knowledge that they're only conceding 5 points, not giving the opposition a shot at the 7 they need to win?
Penalty try now means 7 points automatically.

My preference would be for all tries to be 7 points.
Why should a lucky interception be worth more than a beautifully constructed score in the corner where the kicker fails to convert?
Because the game rewards getting the ball over the line. That is the object. Why should a lucky interception be worth more than a beautifully constructed score in the corner where the kicker fails to convert?
It's not about awarding effort and craft.
More often than not that is what is required to get the ball over the line.
But that doesn't make it the aim of the game. There are no style points.

The reason a try is called a try is because it permitted the scorer the right to try and kick a goal, which is why we still have conversions today. There were no points awarded for a try in the early days of the game.

Why should a side be, in effect, penalised for getting the ball over the line in the corner instead of under the posts?
I understand the history of the conversion but maybe it's time to bin them, or do what they do in the NFL and take all the kicks from in front of the posts.
