Cracking game. Stockdale try was very well worked.

Must say, this week and last NZ look a shadow of their former selves. World cup opportunity knocks.
Someone will appear to blame the ref, the food or some other thing soon....

Loved Japan's handling skills!

Awsome performance from Ireland; NZ never looked like scoring a try

Great Ireland performance all round,we took the game to them and won.

Just not a bad game from any player. New Zealand were gracious in defeat.

Good game! Looking much tighter for the next world cup, just the way it should be.

Well played by the Irish, they stepped up and wanted it more. Obviously some good homework done by the Irish coaching team too to shut down the NZ attack as well as they did. Uncharacteristic number of handling errors and penalties given away by the ABs, thought they were looking quite tired - end of a long season for the players I guess. A loss now might turn out a good thing to get them focussed and thinking up new ideas for the world cup.

Several cracking games this weekend.

Great to see teams keeping the ball in hand more rather than kicking all the time.

Some great tries, Leitch, Stockdale, Horne...

So, in his last 6 games against the All blacks, Andy Farrell has engineered 4 wins, one draw and two defeats.

That's not bad going. Can someone remind me why England got rid of him?

Amazing record to beat them with three different sides.

I couldn’t believe how good Ireland were yesterday, last quarter when NZ were looking to push the pace Ireland were just superb at the breakdown and matched the physical intensity. Hugely impressive win. Told my Irish cousin to book his flights for Japan! They’ll go there knowing they can beat anyone...

None of that talk now, we'll just go along and hopefully do ok.

I've just seen the Ireland match. I managed to avoid the result until I had time to watch the recording without interruption.

I feel exhausted. The Irish played very well. It was not a case of a particularly bad All Blacks team. The Irish line was very strong all the way through. They forced the ABs into hurried passes and decisions. They were so quick off the line that the ABs were forced to drop back.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable match. The last 20, where the ABs seemed a bit like their old self, was especially edge of the seat stuff. The last ten minutes was excruciating. Well done the Irish.

I thought Barnes had a good game.

There was me congratulating myself for remembering the loss in Dublin following the win in Chicago and editing accordingly. And then forgetting to adjust 6 to 7.

Farrell has some magic in his defensive strategies. England, in the interim, have forgotten how to tackle. 31 misses against Japan. You simply do not win tournaments with those stats.

Also, on a related note the Times repeatedly castigated Lozowski for missing the tackle for Japan's first try (both in the main article And then in the player ratings when it was mentioned again and he was given 4/10) when it was quite clearly Ford. A minor point but not exactly difficult to get right and deeply unfair on the young guy.

I'm not excusing missed tackles, but Japan are very good at just slightly altering their running lines before taking contact, rather than the usual bulldozer, 'Maori sidestep' approach adopted these days.

Taking a tackle when no offload is available really is becoming a lost art since the Law was changed, allowing the tackled player to roll around on the ground and 'place' the ball, which seemingly includes passing it from the ground and pushing it backwards in a ruck.

...and yes, Andy Farrell really does have a fantastic eye for a defensive system.

Since coming to Sarries he's really impressed with his tackling, so I think he was hard done by on Sat. Considering he's hardly ever played at 10 for us, I think he's done really well when playing mostly out of position.

How on earth does Farrell keep getting away with these no arms shoulder charge 'tackles'? "I thought your player dropped his shoulder too" says Peyper to Hooper, which, of course, is completely irrelevant. The attacker isn't required to wrap his arms, unlike the tackler. Blatant penalty try for me.
