It's really hard to get a patent on, to come out with a new version or find a USP for someone to come only to your company for it. And if it gets damaged they don't even need to come back to you to repair it.

Whilst 768 has identified some amusing reasons, as someone who has watched "grass" become game-destroying mud at Kingsholm in the middle of winter, that isn't particularly edifying either - though nobody gets hurt (gastro-enteritis from swallowing mud having been pounded face-first into 6" of it maybe), a 6-3 game littered with errors and scrums is not my idea of a good game - it might be if you're a forward, I suppose.

I'm not defending the fully plastic pitches though - there are better hybrid solutions out there now.

Sarries rent theirs out for events and similar.
So schools and community groups can pay for the privilege of having the skin burnt off their arms and legs? Lovely! hehe
And sarries fill the coffers

that's the point.

I doubt there are many players who have missed a game due to a pitch injury - most of them look a state at the end of a game.

Take a look at cycling - lycra doesn't stop friction burns

A fair few older players miss the games on Sarries pitch as they know it will take 2/3 weeks to recover (joint issues) and will miss more games by playing.
Charteris to name one.

There's quite a few who have picked up serious injuries from catching their studs in the stuff and twisting their knee who have missed more than one game!

The physio I see also works closely with Leicester City, Tigers and Loughborough uni.
He collates information on joints / ligaments etc from players who have played or trained on Astro - says the long term outlook for these players doesn’t look great as they’re always picking up issues on their joints.

Just seen that Budge Pountney is the citing officer for tonights Glos v Bath Cup match.

If my recollection (and my wife's) of Pountney's playing days is correct, that seems to be an ideal definition of irony.

Surely the perfect expert in that field??

Bath embarrassing for 20 mins. Glos embarrassing for the following 60.

I'm blanking that 60 minutes from my memory. Too, too traumatic.

Championship new boys Ampthill making some serious signings!
They have a fair amount of cash behind them.

Lot of Fijian 'ringers' there last year getting paid.
Yeah should be good fun to watch some games over there!
Tiny ground though - drive past it on the way to work.

Definitely worth a visit or two. The Blues derby will attract a big crowd.
Speaking of Blues, looked good against Carnegie, nice BP win 1st game of the season, shame the Headingley stadium was quiet!

Ampthill looks to have taken a thumping!

Pleased to see London Irish beat Wasps at the Ricoh yesterday. I gather this was the first away win for them in the Premiership for 26 games!

There's a lot of supporters (including me!) hoping this is a good sign for Irish this season and they hold their own in the Premiership.

Irish have Sale at home next week, hopefully they can make the most of it with Faf De Klerk, Tom Curry and Mark Wilson still away on RWC duty, whereas all of the Irish's Samoan and Fiji players are now available.
