Fair play to Quins after the thumping Chiefs dishes out early in the season they’ve regrouped and battled back. No complaints here after a proper game of rugby. Just wish I could have gone.

Danny Care is 100% on the money

https://www.planetrugby.com/harlequins-scrum-half-...

But will he put the mockers on Smith's ambitions given EJ's "my way or the highway" mindset?

The whole "When will Smith play for England?" thing is a bit dull, and a bit overdone.

A few years back we were shouting at International coaches for chucking young players in at the deep end and burning them. Smith has only just turned 22. He'll get a boatload of England caps, I'm sure.

TBH I'm in the "if they're good enough, they're old enough" camp. We (England) by and large seem to distrust youth - ironically we ALSO seem to distrust age so we're focused on that sweet spot of (sporting) middle age...

Carling was England captain at 22. Different game, I know.

My opinion's worthless, but it does seem to me as though the England setup isn't great at bringing in some of these more exceptional players. Almost as though they can either be in the starting lineup or they're not going to get a sniff of it.

But but but…Tigers with Ford at the helm, also executed a back-from-the-dead routine. Ford has played superbly this season.
Last season Joe S was head and shoulders the best fly half in the country. Hell, he also outclassed Ntamack and Finn.
Marcus isn’t an automatic walk in to the England side. He has though, I think, earned a shot with England. God knows what Joe S has to do though for a shot, he has even less chance than his brother !

I do wonder if there is something in the English psyche that just doesn't gel with 'raw talent', it's almost as if "...you've not to work as hard as (for example) fazlet, therefore you're not to be trusted..."

Pleased to see some of the Quins boys being called up by EJ at last.
Especially pleased for Jack Kenningham - when we lost Will Evans thought we would properly struggle, but Jack has been outstanding particularly in the semi!

According to the Premiership website, Ford only played 5 Premiership games all season! I don't see how he can take much responsibility for anything if he wasn't on the pitch for over 3/4 of the season?

I think we can all cool our jets on this one. He's 20, in his debut season, and has had fewer than 10 starts.

He's had a couple of great games, but he's a LONG way down the England wing pecking order.

I think Dad might regret that tweet a little with a clear head. He's also tagged the wrong RFU account, twice.

You are, to a point, correct. However the RFU does seem to be quite blinkered WRT (for want of a better expression) bolters and (in common with other rugby bodies) seem to bear grudges/let politics get in the way

I'm not sure his age and experience is all that relevant?

Lynagh has 9 starts and 2 bench appearances, compared to Jack Kenningham, with 7 starts and 3 appearances off the bench, and whilst Kenningham is a year older, they're both in their first season.

Admittedly I'd say that the outcome of the season will be more a case of Kenningham wondering when he's going to wake up from the dream than Lynagh feeling hard done by though!

Danny Care was saying on the BBC podcast that they were all together, out on the lash when the calls came in from the England management. Smith, Dombrandt and Marchant, as everyone had been saying was inevitable, but can you even begin to imagine how Jack must've felt when his phone rang next??? biggrin

You have to feel desperately sorry for Will Evans, but for the rest of the squad, and for Kenningham in particular, wow, what an unimaginable fairy-tale of a season!!!

I'd say, as you suggest, it was the Kenningham decision which was a break from the norm, rather than the Lynagh one.

Lynagh might well play for England at some point, but England are flush with wings at the moment (and, more importantly, didn't lose any to the Lions - unlike back rows).

Lynagh (Snr) followed that tweet up with what I think is the correct point. No one expects Lynagh (jnr) to be in the England squad right now. It just shows a strangely passive approach from the RFU. Other unions have been in touch to check on his thinking on eligability but the RFU have been silent, despite Lynagh playing age group rugby for them.

It smacks of indifference and, for want of a phone call, could have been easily avoided. The RFU just aren't hard-nosed enough.

I really think this is still an overreaction.

Of course those smaller rugby nations (everyone is smaller than England) are chasing a potential young recruit. If he's played age-grade rugby for England, why on earth would they be chasing him?

To me, it seems like Lynagh Sr is being a bit precious about it all!

Lynagh Jr has played England age groups, and has had a cracking first year in the Premiership, but even as a less than impartial Quins fan, I'd have to agree that he's not about to batter down the door to the England team on the wing just yet, given the strength already in place.

I don't necessarily see that there's any value to phoning him up to say "no news at this stage"?

I would imagine that if either Italy or Australia put a serious offer in front of him, he'd pick the phone up to England to discuss it, and what's so wrong with that?
