I'm a fluff chucker who doesn't get out enough. I mainly float tube with occasional boat trips on the midlands reservoirs.
I went Tarpon spinning in Mexico a couple of years ago and hooked a couple but they both got off. Bonefishing is on my list one of my fishing mates goes regularly to the Bahamas, it's on my list but only when all the other cash eating stuff is done.

One word - Cuba, where a family holiday in a 4* can be combined with some flats-bothering, and where guides can be hired by the day for sensible money.I went Tarpon spinning in Mexico a couple of years ago and hooked a couple but they both got off. you will love the rio line . i do a bit on my local river (all wild brownies, free fishing on the local stretch) but sea angling is my main form of fishing (ex match angler at international level,) from time to time and the rio line on my 5 wt set up is the first line i have had where a few casts straightens it up no matter how long it has been chucked in the cupboard and forgotten.

I'd have the couple of pints to celebrate catching the trout . Casting with beer goggles isn't pretty and the trout will agree ....
All was fine and tasty Put two under sized ones back then moved up river to be greeted with a marvellous rise but couldn't work out what they were feeding on .... I do now though .....
Tight lines all

I will be out soon. I've been given a little split cane fly rod which needed a couple of eyes whipping on, and look forward to putting it through its paces. Weighs a ton compared to my carbon fibre fly rods, but still pretty light in the grand scheme of things.
I have another cane fly rod I bought last year - it's really meant for fishing wet flies on rivers, but I gave it a bash on Farmoor to see what it was like. Trying to put out a long line on a reservoir with it was interesting. It casts so far with ease, you just have to slow everything down, but try to push it any further and it all just collapses. A reservoir trout puts a very alarming bend in it (and having seen the photos, I think I need a more obtuse angle to the line to play fish off the butt with this rod)
WOW! I absolutely love the cane rod. I've seen a few on the internet ranging in price from about £40 to about £2000. Do you know any do's and don'ts for fly fishing with a cane rod on a river etc.I have another cane fly rod I bought last year - it's really meant for fishing wet flies on rivers, but I gave it a bash on Farmoor to see what it was like. I find cane rods like vintage sports cars - charming , easy on the eye and a pleasure to own. The plot starts to unravel after using one for more than a couple of minutes I find. Heavy , slow action, exhausting to use all day and demanding too much tlc after use. So that makes my 9' 7 weight cane sea trout rod a Triumph TR3 and my various carbon Streamflexes etc anything from an MX5 (6-6 3 weight ) to an RS Focus(8-6 5 weight ) .
Tried one of the latest glassfibre rods a friend had imported from Japan - it was amazingly good and nothing like the load of old tut glass rods uses to be. .

They're nice brook rods - there is an element of the rod flexing against its own weight which makes them nice for short casts in jungle conditions.
They're robust - a good strike with a tungsten beadhead will lead to a broken rod down the line with carbon.
They need a little more care
They don't throw a line as well
My interest is largely cosmetic/nostalgic.

Not done any fly fishing for a couple of years sadly. I had all of my fishing rods stolen a couple of years ago from the garden shed and have yet to replace the fly rods. Two small kids though mean not a lot of time for that sort of thing!
Enjoyed fishing for trout in lakes and a bit of fishing on the Test which was great fun.
I live on the east coast, and really need to sort out a rod as I'd really like to have a crack at Bass. A friend is a commercial fisherman lately and told me that the new beach/groynes that have been created draw the Bass in very close to the shoreline...

Weather has put a hold on any fishing so been doing a lot of research on Euro, Czech nymphing and the like. I've never liked fishing wet but some of these newer (to me) techniques look real good fun.
Trouble is It's cost me another £215 for a new rod
Greys GR70 Streamflex Plus to be precise..........

Clever idea to be able to quickly add on the extra section to turn it into a 10 foot nymphing rod. Ordered it in a 5 WT to match my existing Rio line.
Anybody else using this sort of setup?

i have had a few up to about 2.5lb on surface popping and wake flies up here and they do give a decent account of themselves ,and the takes are far more committed than a wary trout !
