TBF a cane rod, in the right place, is as effective a tool as it ever was. The rush to carbon fast action rods in short lengths wasn't wholly a good thing. The US manufacturers are doing a roaring trade in fibreglass rods for those situations, too. Mr Zhu still seems to sell lots of cane rods out of China & has an excellent reputation.
A personal thing - I have used several over the years and remain unconvinced that for my casting style(self taught , but very effective on the small overgrown waters I fish ) cane can offer anything over carbon. It is heavy and very slow actioned .. Some pundits tell me that is what's needed in tight pools, where space is at a premium . I find the opposite - I far prefer a tippy, fast action .and my 7-6 Hardy is ideal - for me. Glass rods - I tried one of the new generation last year . Far better than expected, but so low were my expectations that I still cannot fathom why anybody would buy one for the sort of daft money they go for . But hey, what do I know , plenty of people delude themselves they'd be better anglers if they blew 500 quid on a fly reel . I am not one of them as I have yet to encounter Giant Trevally or Tarpon in Yorkshire...

If we're going away from fly fishing (not a problem for me) as far as Abu classics are concerned I may be able to trump your 501 closed face with what i think is Abus most iconic reel - means a trip to my attic so i'll let you guess what it maybe for now .... Bonefish may know being more into sea fishing?
I want to say 5000C, but I suspect it's one of the earlier ones?Bonefish Blues said:
So will my rods built on Scott PowrPly carbon blanks. Proper real-life fishing rods
Yep. I think it's a function of design. The amount a rod will load if you move it without line will come down to its inertia and air resistance versus its stiffness. You can make a carbon blank very stiff and very light and very narrow, more so than a glass or cane one, but I don't think you necessarily have to. One Amp Andy said:
Sent you a pm Nigel.
In other news, rods and reels are arriving tomorrow. Books are here, so now studying 'Getting started in fly fishing', with a nice single malt or six.
Edit: Actually found an experienced fly fisherman....works for me in our HGV garage, never knew!
Update required as the rods/reels were expected to arrive Wed (yesterday) so what is your opinion of the purchases, Andy? I realise you are probably out practising with a wool fly or maybe the other half has already requisitioned all the best ones and you are busy reordering a few more??In other news, rods and reels are arriving tomorrow. Yep, everything arrived! They seem to be well made bits of kit, and everything is really well balanced. The Greys 7 ft 3w and GX1000 reel are due today, along with a vest, bank bag and various other goodies that I probably didn't need!

All looks great Andy.
Now for the first practice casts to get the 'feel' of them all and how accurately you can place the fly.
Enjoy!
First job will be knot tying practice and getting the line onto reels - whether you need backing line, how much and type. Then leader to line and line to tippet. Now for the first practice casts to get the 'feel' of them all and how accurately you can place the fly.

Lovely kit there Andy
We planned to go out tomorrow for some practice, but doing some actual work has got in the way. Customer needs an excavator down to bloody Penzance for tomorrow afternoon, it's a fair old drag from here. So I'm going to take a couple of rods and see if I can find somewhere along the A30 on the way back to have a play about.

Where can you pull a rig into along the A30 for a play about? Asking for a friend?dickymint said:

From what I can see on Andy’s pictures those reels look like they already have backing line already on the spool?Lovely kit there Andy
Leader and tippet will be the next quest of course though!

Depends what sort of play about I suppose! I'm thinking Victoria services near St. Austell, as I seem to recall there is a huge field at the back, so I can practice casting on that with some fluff on the end.Gassing Station | Sports | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
