Keep the thread , as a generic 'fishing ' one will become dominated by carp fishng , so popular has it become . But , given this thread's occasional drifts , rename 'flyfishing and light lure fishing '? They are very similar disciplines, often attracting the same people.

Severn looks lovely , but when I see it I tend to think of Brummie Bonefish , aka barbel, more than the usual suspects..That said , if you have access to a boat especially , there are humoungous zander go be caught on lure.

I'm just planning a jaunt with a chum next Spring for some wild brownies on the Lugg - never fished it but on a foodie/ Prescott/Welsh borders jaunt OH and I made last year to Ludlow we crossed the Lugg and it looked lovely. Anyone fished it ?

A good point John, I was also thinking we should change the title, so perhaps a few more “ Viators “ could find the thread? wink

It’s not my OP though, so Dicky Mint would need to change the thread title.

As far as the Lugg is concerned, it was one river I don’t think I have ever fished, so it’s on my plan.

The BAA have a section here which I’ve been thinking about.

That’s not how I think of the Severn - when I was a boy my uncle had a peg at the end if his garden, so to me it’s like this;

Fast, shallow, clear.
Ahh yes the section by the Ye Old Robin Hood pub! I know it well, we’ve had many a pint in that pub over the years!

Don’t think I’ve ever fished that part of the Severn though!

Driving to that location yesterday I was trying to think back to some river locations my dad took us too, as the approach to the BAA car park had a familiar feel to it.

I’m on a quest now to rediscover that location!
I was much further upstream again - we used to fish just upstream of Welshpool smile

I currently have a Orvis 3wt Superfine rod I got from an Orvis Outlet years ago... its very light and nice for casting and has helped me improve.

I am thinking it might be good to have a stronger rod? The local fisheries around me (which I haven't ventured to) are all 2lb and up to 15lb even... would it be unwise to use such a light rod there?

My reel is a Orvis clearwater.

Appreciate any advice. Thanks

They used to live in the white cottage opposite. I spent many days of my summer holidays there, chucking floats or feeders or big chunks of luncheon meat for the chub and barbel. I remember hooking something on there, a big barbel no doubt, which just decided it was going to visit Bristol whether I liked it or not... Followed it downstream until I was blocked by a tree and had to try to stop it, at which point the line parted.

Still not sure I've forgiven them for selling that house!

It is too light. You would land fish , eventually, but it'd be a long ,drawn out process. I use a 5 weight for rainbows from 2-7lb and it is marginal sometimes . I'd be thinking an 8-6 # 5/6 weight . Reel immmaterial as long as it takes the line (WF easier ) and good amount of backing .

I'd agree, though I did once fish Farmoor with a #3/4 outfit after breaking a rod, and actually got them in quicker than on my usual #6/7. To some extent the harder you pull, the harder they pull back. Still, wouldn't set out to catch big rainbows on such light gear.

Just by way of balance, I was fishing Avon Springs routinely using my Scott 8-8 2 weight for rainbows up to 7+ these many donkeys years ago. I don't think it took me any longer to land them - but I'm notably tough on fish and it was a perfect rod for the purpose smile

Gosh - my (now relegated to the back of the rod cupboard) Greys 3 weight made playing even a half pound brownie in fast water feel like a remake of The Old Man and the Sea

Tippet was strong enough, it's the most compliant rod in the world, and I was/am reasonably adept at getting a fish to do the work.

Ask me to bore you rigid with tales of landing 3,4,5lb bonefish in the thick of mangroves wink

(Hint, don't! hehe )

Thanks... so I should look for a 6 weight maybe then.

No objection here. Coppice is spot on in that any new title needs a bit of thought. My thoughts are on the lines of ...

"......apart from sat on your arse (or sleeping in a tent) waiting for an alarm to go off thread" hehe

Anyhow I'll have to ask the Mods to change it so let's have a few more suggestions first thumbup

I wouldn't go below a #5 for stockie stillwater fishing. Especially if C&R. It's just not fair on the fish.

I agree to a certain degree but maybe another thread encompassing all types of fishing, including course and sea fishing, may entice more folks to share their experiences.

Shall I start one, and see how it goes ?

This is reminding me of the 'single model wars' that us "Wedgers" had with the TVR Car Club many years ago rofl

Well I’m sure it’s quite similar, we all have our little quirks when it comes to cars and fishing clearly!

A case in point is that Westfield owners all assume that all Caterham owners look down on them as “ Non Caterham “ owners, when nothing could be further from the truth!

But there is sadly a lot of snobbery from certain car clubs, and the Lotus Seven ( generally original S1 and S2) classic owners can be a bit “ Old School Vintage “ types who consider anything else to be not worthy of consideration!

Personally I love all types of Sevens, but have been lucky enough to have owned a wide range of Caterham
Models over the last 23 years of my ownership.

But the point was regarding fishing, and the fact is we will all have a style that we prefer for some reason or another, so once again happy to have another thread if it brings more people on board.

I would only every use a 3wt on streams where the fish aren’t likely to be more than 1-1 1/2lbs. Tremendous fun. I do use my 4wt on some still waters but generally use my 5 or 6 wt for fish of 3 lbs +. I use my 8wt when I’ve been drinking and think I’m going to catch a double.

Yes I’m sorry that I do tend to post random ramblings!

Sorry for that.
