Why should they? There's still 14 hours of play left.

They may as well completely and utterly humiliate us...

SA will probably collapse tonight. Leavibg us two days to win the game. Cook double ton. Jennings 51. Ballance 11 (lbw) Stokes, Bairstow and Root take it home.

Easy.

Longer they bat more it grinds the bowlers and the fielding side into the dust. I wouldn't declare today.

So we only need 475 to win, nothing can go wrong from here.

It would be nice to see us dig in.

We could do with Boycott back in the squad, two days at the crease for a careful 43. Tavare at the other end.

Well we will neex to attack tomorrow i England want to win with a day to spare. 473 in 90 overs is quite a challenge.

Mighy have to bat Tuesday at least till lunch.

Good for Root to have them right where he wants them...

(BTW Root used to be house mates with Ballance, other selectors against picking him but alparently Root insisted...)

No!! Think of the run-out opportunities!! You might as well pick Nasser as well!

Because as I seem to do on a regular basis these days I forgot what day it was biggrin

Time for the openers to prove all of us wrong. Cook's due a big score. Root to dig in. Am assuming Jennings will fluff it and Ballance will fall short. Then see what Bairstow and Stokes can achieve.

Game on (biggrin).

Shock....Jennings out cheaply, and Ballance out again LBW. No foot movement, stays deep in his crease he is a walking wicket.

Pretty much as everyone predicted. Ballance is either in the wrong place (IE should bat 5) or is at the wrong level. He simply isn't a 3.

Jennings, well I just don't know what the answer is, but to come in and make English fans want Roy back is quite an achievement....

Poor application again this morning, Cook seems to have used a lot of lives already !

Its odd for Balance. Makes truck loads of runs at county level but just not technically good enough at test level and will be found out. Not sure he is good enough at all even if he was moved to 5.

Not managed to be near a radio today, presumably Geoffrey has been in full scathing flow about the batting. Embarrassing.

I've only seen the scorecard, which indicates we were ste. I hope Geoffrey remembered his blood pressure pills.

It was pretty dreadful

Jennings & Ballance both look completely out of place & don't have the confidence they need to bat in the top 3

Philander will knock over Ballance every time with his very odd technique - he wasn't playing anywhere near the ball this morning for that lbw & is so far back in his crease.

Root got a good ball, nothing much he could do. Cook was done for pace with the bouncer but probably shouldn't have been thinking about hooking anyway.

The rest were pretty poor. Bairstow's brain scrambled. Stokes seemed to have the right idea about playing out of his crease to Philander but just pushed at a ball he should have blocked.

SO we might need 4 new players for the Oval. Must be the end of Dawson, maybe for Rashid. I know so little about modern county players that I can't say who has the character and technique to bat top 3, but makes sense to play at least one right hander. Wood doesn't look threatening when his pace is down, so may need resting.

SA side looked so much better balanced with Morris & Du Plessis, will be even better with Rabada back. Kuhn/Elgar their weakness (how does Elgar score runs batting like that?) but can't underestimate Kuhn's runs on the first morning when it was v tough.

Disagree on Wood. they have two weeks off and they Oval is usually quick an bouncy. Just a chance Woakes may be fit though.

Jennings doesn't appear up to the job. Seems to be the new Adam Lyth. A decent county player but woefully short at Test level.

1 wicket in 2 matches? Pace down & not threatening (compare with morris!)

Was a S.A. u19 player & I bet they have been right in his ear for the 2 tests... I would suspect it's all in his head, but not a good sign with the ashes coming up
