Disagree on Wood. they have two weeks off and they Oval is usually quick an bouncy. Just a chance Woakes may be fit though.
1 wicket in 2 matches? Pace down & not threatening (compare with morris!)
Apparently he has a bruised heel, which might have had an impact. Not sure Woakes is fit.

Well Ballance has a broken finger, so those of us looking for a change in the top three get our wish.

Question is who to go for.

I understand Duncan Fletcher preferred to find test batsman who weren't necessarily great at county level, but who had the "right stuff" eg M Vaughan.

We seem to pick on form, which I have always preferred, but it seems 1000+ runs in the second div of county isn't quite the preperation for test level.

The answer must surely be smaller number of counties an more competitive cricket ?

I think Geoffrey was saying Stoneman will be the next cab off the rank.

Scratching my head totally.

Will be interesting to see who gets wheeled out next week (I'm at Day 2...if I remember what day it is).

I can't believe Rashid is not in the test team - I know t20 is a different game, but he looks class tonight.

He's a wicket taking bowler - Dawson certainly isnt

The whole Dawson thing seems very odd. Bowls average left arm spin, and didn't look threatening in the tests and they started him before Moeen. They dragged Rashid around last year as the 12th man and never played him, so you would have thought being a regular in the ODI side he would get first shout at test level.

I know he can be expensive at times but at least he takes wickets

I've never quite worked out the selection process.

I'm old enough to remember in the 80's when people would come in for a match, not do very well and be pushed out again quickly. That pendulum has swung too far the other way.

Additionally, they seem to have forgotten what half of a test match is about, and that's grinding, which needs technique.

Jennings' time must be up now? Westley didn't set the world on fire but in one innings has scored over half the runs Jennings has made in the last 5 innings.

But, who goes in with Cook? Stoneman? Or can we give Cook two wickets so he can bat at both ends?

3 down now, this could get ugly...

Ball moving around & we didn't play it well in the second test

Stokes batted beautifully all day - looked in no trouble at all

Not a bad total in the end, 400 would have been a good score I think.

Philander would be some player if he was fit... looks like a club player trundling in (yes I know he'd be sharp even at top club level) & can't manage more than 5 or 6 overs when he's on the pitch.
