In the end Root has to bat 3, I know he doesn't want to, but as the best bat in the team, that is his natural place.

Can't seem him opening, it is mentally draining to be Captain, managing all the tactics and then padding up straight away as soon as the innings changes (although being 3 with the current openers might not give much chance for a rest either)

Malan - worth sticking with, played a good knock yesterday and sometimes you need a run of games to get into it. Lets face it, whoever goes to Australia now is likely to be undercooked for the the trip, so might as well go for the longer term bet.

Bowling wise, if Broad went we still have Wood, TRJ, Woakes, Jimmy A, Stokes, Finn, Curran (22) Jordan (8 tests) to look at.

Broad tends to bowl better on hard decks and still seems to have enough control, good balls to make it worth while. I think Stokes will be a handful in Aus too.

Personally I'd be OK with Roy back at the top, balls in Aus have less sidewise movement so he might be a better bet.

I agree with most of that, but I'd pick Hales ahead of Roy any day.

I felt sorry for Kraigg Brathwaite. the Sky commentators are making a big deal of the fact that nobody has scored a century in each innings of a First Class game at Headingley (not even Boycott???!!), and he fell just short.

Although his batting partner in what was a fairly epic first innings for the Windies Shai Hope is still in with a chance. He's crept out of the "nervous seventies" and is now into the "even more nervous eighties". He needs to get a move on, there's a new ball due soon!

Oooooh. Getting exciting now.

Wrong wicket, but a wicket's a wicket.

They don't deserve to and it looks unlikely...bad light maybe. Or running out of overs?

Hope steals Brathwaite's thunder smile

Well played Shai Hope! A big innings under pressure, and a well deserved record.

That was poor.

Maybe the light's not helping, but that didn't look that hard.

That's the second catch that Cook has shelled in this innings.

He's usually very reliable, it's out of character, particularly the last one.

Everyone had this match won by England. We were runs short, but I don't think that was a contributor to our defeat. I think Roots declaration was a decent one. The fact that our bowling and fielding was way under Parr in both innings and our batting in the first is what has caused this. Inexcusable really. Nothing has been learnt after the second test against South Africa. We were too complacent after hammering them in the first test.

And as I type this Stokes has just dropped Blackwood. Disgraceful. Utterly disgraceful.

Another 30 runs or so before declaring would probably have given at least a draw.

In terms of learning anything it has made little difference. It will hit ranking points (if they matter) and no one should like losing.

(Blackwood just gone...only 5 more to go! 8 runs).

Edited - 1 run!

That was exciting, and although we played poorly for the first three and a half days, the WIndies put in a decent performance and cricket is the better for that.

Agreed. A good win for the Windies, and a character-building turn-around after the first Test. Sets the series up nicely for Lord's.

Great game for everyone & a great game foe Test match cricket .

The game needs a strong West indian team.

Happy to be beaten & i hope Root doesn't get too much hassle over the declaration.

I'm in a field in Cornwall so just checking in at the end of each day. Yesterday my eyebrows were fully raised when I'd read we declared. Very aggressive and risky captaincy.

Eyebrows raised , what like the Cock ? oops meant the Rock .

Great game, just what test match cricket needs, 5 days right to the wire, who cares that we lost /

Wonderful game & Root should be congratulated for his declaration.
