If England had switched round their level of aggression with their mouths and level of aggression with the ball bowling first might be looking a better option.

I refer you to my comments from years ago - where country of birth is not the discussion. It is the country of 'learning the cricket' that is relevant. If Khawaja grew up overseas and learned his cricket overseas, he should not play for Australia. He emigrated before the age of 5.

Compare and contrast with players who play international representative cricket for one country and then miraculously change citizenship. Like Keppler Wessels for example - who became "Australian" during the ere when SA could not play international cricket.

That's pretty basic really - or you may as well just bin international cricket if you just pick a foreigner whose grandmother happens to be an Aussie or a Pom.

Anyway - not going to rehash a years old discussion. Clearly, most fans and the games administrators don't really give a toss about the point of international sport - its all just tv rights and revenues, and dwindling test match crowds show that fans have an attention span of about 20 overs per side.
Well when the home team 'entertain ' the crowd by going at 2 an over for 30 overs, plus the terrible Aussie weather, it's no surprise. wink

btw 55,000 in the crowd today, a new record at the ground.
I should have been more clear on dwindling numbers - tests other than Aus-Eng seem to have much smaller crowds (apart from India of course, where there are 8 billion cricket fans).

Personally, I think test match cricket is a bit fvcked - some players don't play if there is an IPL conflict, you have st grounds in England buying Ashes tests (Cardiff and Chester-Le-Street) in place of traditional Ashes grounds with history, test cricket is now on a platform that paid the most for the right but has about 15* subscribers, and most fans want to now watch 20:20 cricket.

  • BT Sport have about 2m subscribers. Quite a few less than the 8m that tuned into live Ashes cricket on Channel 4.

I expect most people have BT sport for football.

I wonder how many people are actually watching the ashes on BT sport. Not many I expect. I even looked into getting it for a month or so but the subscription and connection charges and rubbish website put me off.

I’ve watched the ashes every year for as far back as I can remember but now I’m streaming it from a dodgy Indian feed.

I pay for sky and amazon and Netflix so I’m happy to pay for content but it’s just a subscription too far for me, especially with the time difference.

I think it going to BT is actually really bad news for test cricket in the uk.

286/5. The insertion is now looking even more of a joke. Awful decision, why cede the advantage to the opposition when you're already behind? Aussies will get 400 plus and we'll be skittled for 180, just watch.

Never ever ever put the opposition in.

It's always dumb, and usually dumber.

The weather did look a bit overcast, you can see why he did it but it was a big mistake. Australia just grinding it out against a toothless attack.

Yeah they’ll wait till the dark by the time they’ll have 450odd, put England in after the break and then declare.

England come in and face a barrage of pace in the last session in the dark with their ropey openers struggling for form.

My 2-2 prediction has been ground down to 5-0 to the Aussies already, our attack is just toothless and really missing the skill and aggression of Stokes. We will probably be 3 down by the close.

All future England captains should be told to bat first in Australia regardless of conditions.

I don't think batting first would have made much difference to the outcome of this match.

Our batsman have to just dig in & bore the pants off everyone.

I agree.

We're going to be on the end of a 5-0 this series sadly.

W G Grace - "When winning the toss you should bat first 99 times out of 100. On the other occasion you should think about it and then bat".

Change is coming though
The BBC and ECB today announced a new five-year, strategic partnership that brings live cricket back to BBC TV for the first time in 21 years.
The deal, which runs from 2020 to 2024, sees the nation’s favourite broadcaster become the exclusive, free to air home for cricket. The BBC runs the most popular TV, radio and digital sports services in the UK, and cricket will take centre stage across all platforms to ensure the sport reaches the widest possible audience.

The deal involves live TV coverage of two England men’s international T20 matches, one England women’s T20 international, plus live TV coverage of 10 men’s matches from the ECB’s New T20 competition, and up to eight live matches from the women’s T20 tournament including both Finals.

The BBC will also broadcast primetime TV highlights of England men’s home international matches. In total, there will be over 100 hours of cricket back on BBC TV from 2020.

Torrid.

So if you’re the Australian captain, do you make England bat again or go in and have another go?
