Torrid.

So if you’re the Australian captain, do you make England bat again or go in and have another go?
If it just started to get dark again, I’d put you back in.

Me too. We didn’t see much yesterday evening with the rain. I think it could be carnage for England having to go in again.

Dammit !

The Burnley Lara skittled for a duck... that is unusual.

If I were the Aussie skip, I would put us straight back in.

cannot believe they are batting again

surely they would want total humiliation and an innings defeat...

PS. are the Aussies that good or are we just completely useless???

This isn’t a great Aussie side. Their bowling has more pace though and we’re missing Ben Stokes.

Our top order batsmen seem to be struggling (cook particularly) also.

I don’t think there is a huge difference between the sides but playing at home makes a big difference.

Odd we’re always on an Australian series win but this is pretty poor in anyone’s books.

Unless Cook or Root make a decent (80+) score we are always going to be struggling.

There is quite a gulf between bowlers trundling in at 79-84 and 86-91.

Even Hazlewood was bowling in the low 90s.

high 70s - low 80s is good club cricket pace.

And, as mentioned, Lyon is quite useful.

You sure about that? I think most club "fast" bowlers would struggle to pass 70...

If you go to the top tier of club cricket, some overseas, county 2's might be 80+ but not many. (We had an Antiguan once who was a bit sharp, trouble is none of the slips could catch at that speed & we had loads of broken fingers.. )

Nooo ... now of course the answer will be - that's what they bowl at in Australia...

Agree though, I played a fair bit of club cricket, never saw anything at that pace (thank God) otherwise I'd have been taking guard at Square Leg.

I meant 'good' top level club cricket. As you mentioned, overseas players etc.

I suppose it depends where you play. Lots of Aus and WI quicks play in various Yorkshire leagues - or certainly did a few years back. Some local quicks were handy too.

Bit of rain tomorrow - two days left. How many do Aussie's need ? 300 ? 350 tops.

Can't see us coming back, but a least have a bit of pride.

Would be good to see a couple of the batsman make a fight of it.

Strange decisions in this match Root bowling first, then Smith not enforcing the follow on - in the late evening session when all the England batsman were on the floor.

No way we'd have got through that session with losing 2-3 wickets minimum.

Bowling rather well indeed but the lead is more than useful and should get quite a bit bigger before Cook and Co put the pads on again and try to bat long

There's quick and "bloody quick" though.. The difference is marked, even though it's maybe only 5-10 mph. Semi-pro premier league club cricket is far removed from the game most club players play. A recent club coach, ex county player, reckoned that 75mph+ bowlers were few & far between even in the top leagues.

Makes you think how scary Thommo must have been at his 100mph peak.
Re today, good if belated effort by the lads but what a shame Stokes isn't there, he would have evened things up.

Imagine Larwood in 1933. Probably as quick as Thommo or Marshall, Holding etc.. but crappy pitches, no fielding restrictions, thin gloves and pads, no helmets or chest pads etc... No wonder the Aussies whinged. Suthol will remember, he was a young clubbie at the time.
